I know this is an old thread, but I have an idea of how this could be implemented. Maybe have a dedicated "standoff" button. So you would have to hold that for your character to hold the gun to their head, and then you would have to click in order to follow through. This could also be good for roleplay, where a character threatens to kill themselves with a gun to ruin their gang's chance of survival by attracting a massive horde of zombies to their base, and the other characters try to get them to take the gun from their temple. If they add a way to grab other players, one could hold the standoff button in that context to hold the gun to their victim's head. This would also be good for roleplay, as I'm sure we can all imagine.

How will we know blood is on our character in the IWBUMS branch if animations are not being released with them? Am I missing something?

Not sure how I feel about that. It could make it harder to know where your windows are and how many barricades are still on them, things like that. Plus, I've always felt that, because of the way PZ handles sight, it has always had the best indoor "feel". I like the current style and don't see much of a reason to change it, but as long as it doesn't hurt gameplay I guess it's fine.

It might be too much to ask, but it would be nice to have both graphical styles in the options.

BayCon reacted to Brex in More Starting Scenarios
Many of us have experienced the custom start scenarios and challenges that have been implemented in the game so far, from fending off waves of zombies at the mall to dealing with never-ending hordes in the middle of the woods. Well, with the announcement by devs that there would eventually be new player "stories" that set up custom characters, starting locations, etc., I thought it'd be interesting to take that one step further. So what I'm suggesting are some additional starting scenarios to the game, outside of merely spawning in a random location around Knox County. I think it would make gameplay much more interesting and add character to...well, your character.

Here are five ideas of mine, complete with flashy custom titles:

    Lockdown
You start in a cell in Knox Penitentiary with absolutely nothing to your name. Your cell door is unlocked. There are dozens of zombies around you, along with (eventually) prisoner and guard NPCs that are desperately trying to fight off the waves of the undead. You have to escape the prison unscathed with only your wits and maybe a set of keys dropped by an ill-fated guard.

    Stranded
You start on the side of the highway outside Muldraugh and March Ridge with a random assortment of minor injuries. You've just crashed your car after hitting a zombie in the middle of the road. The car is totaled, and the sound of the crash has attracted a horde. You only have precious seconds to grab whatever random assortment of items you have in the trunk and hightail it outta there.

    5150
This is only available if you choose the Police Officer occupation. You spawn in a police car with a fully-loaded pistol at your side and a shotgun in the trunk. You're outside a random house in Knox County responding to a report of unknown trouble. Upon investigating the house, you find that everyone inside is dead...or worse. Before you can call for backup, the radio goes dead. You're on your own, officer.

    Turbulence
You spawn in the middle of the woods with mild to severe injuries next to a burning helicopter wreck. You're the only survivor of a helicopter crash after being shot down by an Army chopper. Apparently the pilot didn't get the message about the no-fly zone over Knox County. Now you're bleeding bad, the fire from the helicopter is spreading, and (of course) the zombies are coming to check out all the noise. There are a few supplies scattered around the crash site, but time isn't exactly on your side...

You're the town pastor. Your congregation is dead and you've barricaded yourself in your house of worship. The End of Days is upon the world, but you have not been Raptured yet. Instead you have been chosen by God to be the Shepherd of Death, to lead and send your rotting flock to the afterlife via a bullet to the head or an ax to the face. Blessed are the peacemakers, after all.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

I don't want the NPC's to become a bigger threat than the zombies, and I started to hate The Walking Dead when it became a people drama. You know the most recent season finale (or whatever episode that was where all the gangs tried to screw over Rick's crew) had one zombie in it, right? ONE ZOMBIE!!! And it was just a dead main character, so that doesn't even really count. It's just the actress with some makeup to pale her skin, and some gray contacts, nothing creative like the zombies in TWD usually are. (side note, I didn't care one bit that she died because the characters of the show have no "character" and the writers suck at developing them, writing their dialogue, and getting me to care about any of them. Seriously, Rick, Carl, Michone, and Daryl could all die in the same episode and I would not care, where as a few years ago I would have flipped. That show sucks now.). Also, I gotta say, I don't want these set-in-stone Walking Dead-esque NPC groups. I want a more dynamic system in place than that. Now, it would be fine if the system was so sophisticated that sometimes it would create these huge bands of survivors that go to war with each other, but seriously, it would get old for me having the same groups pop up over and over.

I don't think that preset factions would fit well in the game.

Rather than have these different factions form on their own in the exact same place every time, let the players influence just how territory changes hands and what factions form. Have the game start with no factions as the quarantine was just recently placed on the game area, and have NPCs/the player form them on their own over time.

Allows the player to feel their actions have direct consequence earlier on. Clearing an infested warehouse and coming back later to find bandits have set up shop is a more enriching experience than the warehouse having always had a preset group.
Deeper player agency as they discover what actions can be taken to ensure different consequences. For example, this could be helping someone badly hurt, and weeks later when they're the leader of a nearby group they might be more receptive to bartering. Instead of the prison always having a tough set of armed inmates, let the game decide what outcome happens. Say the prison always starts with a dozen inmates, and five guards. What are their traits? Upon world generation, the prisoners could all end up psychopathic, athletic brawlers that massacre the guards, or a mishmashed group of craven gardeners and hunters that are quickly put in check. This means several things:

The results add variety and depth to the prison area The player could arrive at the prison early and directly influence the outcome This allows for deeper consequences. You could help the prisoners take over, and then later they could ally with your own faction, or perhaps they just decide to terrorize the entire Rosewood area instead.
I think there's just too much to be explored with more RNG-decided factors, rather than preset factions.

    1. the messed up loot spawning (loot appearing in inappropriate locations and not appearing in the appropriate locations) makes supply runs not worth the effort.

In fact, the candles should not be fire dangerous, at least in the game. This makes their use very difficult.
I would like to see as many large electric lamps as possible that illuminate the terrain well, maybe spotlights?
I imagine how they all turn in at the same time when many zombies are moving toward my house.

See, this expanded post to me seems a lot more reasonable than "darkness annoys me". Although I still disagree about darkness being annoying, I can't argue against the fact that this is a great set of suggestions and a very well-done post. I hope each one gets implemented!

So I always have the electricity on. Continuously. I always set electricity to never go out (the 0-5 year option). Why? Because darkness is annoying to me. Sure at the beginning of the game, when you barely have played, night is very scary. You have low visibility and not a lot of awareness of where a zed is. However after that "scariness" is over, darkness is just that, dark. Annoying to walk around in and I want to be able to see.

What we need is more LIGHT. Yes. Light. We can continue working during the night, especially since our characters don't seem to need 8 hours of sleep and have no circadian rhythm (we get sleepy with a workout, not by our internal clocks). So if I want to be able to work at night I should be able to see. We have had lamps made from animal fat since as far back as 70,000 BC (estimated), we should be able to make lamps. Also this makes and additional goal of keeping a lamp lit, and to feel more like "living" instead of "surviving" for the late-game.

Basic things that are in our real world, as well as throughout human history, such as long-lasting candles, torches (wood kind), oil lanterns aren't in the game. Candles are in the game, but they are only to hold in your hand. Campfires are in the game but they are weak and only used to cook food and provide basic light.

Plus the basic aesthetics of having a light source here and there is always a plus.

    So my suggestions are:
Candlesticks, Candle + Bowl, Candle Lanterns, Candle in Jar, Survival Candle All PLACEABLE in the game, with the ability to place on tables. Fuel is the actual candle, which degrades over time Since we already have batteries that do the same, it wouldn't be a stretch to have candles programmed the same way for placed items Maybe X candles + cooking pot = pot of melted wax Pot of melted wax + Jar = Candle Jar Candle Jars last longer than the X candles together Torches Plank or tree branch + knife + towel/cloth strips + gas (kerosene)  This is literally how to make a torch IRL, basic torches can last from 15 minutes, with better ones lasting for several hours Kevlar, which was available commercially since the 70s, is made from flame-resistant materials, but is fantastic for making a long-lasting torch. Kevlar could easily be added into the game when armor is eventually added, and this gives it an alternate use, which adds functionality complexity which is always a plus. Oil Lamp Bowl/Jar, Cloth Strip/String, Oil/Kerosene Basic DIY lamp that you can make at home RIGHT NOW. Seriously. Like Google it right now, you can have a few oil candles for your porch since it is almost summer at time of post More "mordern" Kerosene Oil Lamps were also more common in the 90s, and have been around since 1853.  DIY Oil lamps have been around since 70,000-50,000 BC. You literally only need animal fat or oil, something to soak it up and something to hold it in. Maybe when we have hunting mechanics we can use the fat for this as well as making candles When more crops are added, possibly making vegetable oils for cooking and lamp fuel Olive oil has been used for thousands of years for oil lamps, and is preferred in making your own. Lamps work with refuelling the lamp with oil. Performance  My research shows that it is dependant on how much you are burning, maybe have a "Low light" and a "High light" setting, which influences lamp oil burn "A kerosene lamp producing 37 lumens for 4 hours per day will consume about 3 litres of kerosene per month." From a DIYer "The wicks come 3 to a pack at Wal-Mart and are about 8 inches long each. I trimmed the wick to a crown shape. I found that a half gallon of standard lamp oil lasted about 150 hours, conservatively (my actual burn time was 154.5 hours). When I measured the wick, only ¼" (6 mm) had been burned. Pressurized Camp Lamp Those Coleman camp lamps that produce a bright, white light by pressurizing the fuel. Scavenge the cans in stores Can have the same fuel "bar" as batteries, since they are pretty much the "batteries" of these lamps Tiki Torch, Lamp Post Aesthetic light source Ideal for outside placement Fire Barrel For your disposal needs Super bright Fuel is based on what you are throwing into it Wood Corpses Unusable wood Planks Baseball bats Trash Pick up the barrels on the floor of some buildings Right click > Make Fire Barrel Maybe require hammer to punch holes in the side for airflow Also can be cooked on, if corpses are used as fuel, it taints the food and water until new fuel is added NEW ITEMS Kerosene Camping Oil, Lamp Oil, Firestarting Oil etc Common for camping, especially in sheds and stores. Fuel for oil lamps, used to make torches If used in campfire, instantly the strongest light you can have Cooking oil Used for cooking, maybe more efficient times for stir-frys as well? Additional crafting option when growing compatible crops Used as oil lamp oil, or torches Placement Items All items have somewhat varied capacities, place on surfaces that make sense Makeshift Oil Lamp (Wine/Empty Glass Bottle) Makeshift Oil Lamp (Whiskey Bottle) Makeshift Oil Lamp (Jar) Makeshift Oil Lamp (Bowl) Oil Lamp Camp Lamp Lamp Post Carpentry skill, place it down, right click-add fuel Tiki Torch Scavenge, place it down, right-click add fuel Candle in Bowl Candle Jar Wall-mounted oil lamp Wall-mounted candle holder Fire barrel

And they should last a good deal of time too. At least a few days of constant burning (Sorry if this is mistaken, I haven't seen a burning candle in awhile, and haven't dedicated any brain power to determining how long they would burn if they were never put out), like candles in real life. If I'm not mistaken, they are already in the game as an item, right? You just can't actually use them?
