false_chicken got a reaction from Atoxwarrior in Chicken's Lantern Mod
Hello! This is my first mod release for PZ (Well any game actually...). Enjoy! Feedback/Bug reports are appreciated! Special thanks to forum user AnonPrime (http://theindiestone.com/forums/index.php/user/19537-anonprime/) for his tremendous help and insight on the ins and outs of PZ modding.

This mod currently adds two lanterns to the game:

    - LED Lantern

        - Takes batteries. Lasts as long as the flashlight.

    - Gas Lantern

        - Takes gas (Petrol) and lasts about twice as long as the LED lantern. Uses a quarter of a can of gas to fill.

Both are about as common as the flashlight.

    - Issues/Bugs -

        - The Gas Lantern cannot be refilled when it is not completely empty.
        - The Gas lantern cannot be refilled by a Gas Can that is less than 25% full. (Has a used delta of less than 0.25)
        - The icons are not all that great and are just a simple recolor of each other. I am terrible at art and welcome any submissions.

My server also had the "loud beeping" problem (Just about 10 minutes ago) and we had to hard reset everything. All our data was corrupted and no one could join without red text saying that an error has occurred.

Can already see it now..........survived years into the zombie apocalypse only to be taken out by an angry swarm of bees because you ran out of lids.

You can get wax from bee hives to use to seal off cans. If that doesn't suit you, though, you can dry the fruits and vegetables and use the damaged lids to store them instead of pressure cooked foods. The seal would still be strong enough to keep out water if not bacteria and that won't matter because the bacteria won't be able to survive on the dried food to make it go bad. Heck, you could store the dried food without jarring it so long as it keeps dry.

Ideally, a root cellar would be something that exists . . . not to mention grain crops. Oats/flax are pretty easy to grow, for example.

That's the problem with an apocalypse: eventually manufactured goods break down and run out. We're just not prepared anymore to do wax sealing of jars (which could be an alternative if lids are returned to the player, one day . . . just with a higher chance of spoilage). (Assuming candle wax is sufficient for this sort of thing.)

Lids are one-use for the traditional mason jar sold throughout the US and Canada. Not much point in giving back the used ones due to this.
Though I know there are some newer ones on the market (rubber ring), it might not fit the time-line of the game.  French clamp-down styles do exist, but they tend to be decorative items, used for dry storage, at least in my neck of the woods. I've never seen them used for canning until Harakka and RobertJohnson showed me them.
The mason jar variant with one-use lids are also dirt cheap.

    As for power and knowledge
i could prob work out a windmill with a dynamo of a bike to supply a little power or use a river or the like to have a waterwheel to get the rotation for a small dynamo and have my power that before i even would consider get a solarpanel to work. For a siimple solution and for my knowledge i would use the wind/water powered dynamo to power some flashlights or bike lights for the use to have light in the house and maybe charge batteries for a radio or the like. Everything above that would requiere higher skill and knowledge not to talk about the stuff to build and run this.
as far for the game i would say keep it simple and solarpower needs to get used constant or the panels burn out, with a dynamo you could simple switch the connector of and thats it

You should try jarred strawberry compote, it can last for years and it's great! Just the fruit, boiled water and sugar. Also works great with apples and pears.

I thought about solar panels and such as well but came to realize that if the devs want to strive for realism they probably wouldn't add them. Mostly because it does take quite a bit of knowledge/equipment to set a system like that up. I was looking it up for some supplemental power for my home but found that its a pretty technical field and I wouldn't think most people would have the knowledge to work that out. I mean you can infer what to do with hammer and nails but electronic circuits and engineering are a whole other ball game. Its much more than just hooking a panel up to a battery.
At least that's my opinion. You might be able to get away by adding some tech skill and books but I still wouldn't feel like that would be very realistic. I have an introduction textbook to electric circuits and its pretty damn thick and technical. I'd find it hard to believe you could find time to get through the book, find the panels, wires, deep cycle batteries, inverters, etc. and do all that while nearly starving in the apocalypse. Also batteries and panels break/wear and wouldn't be sustainable unless you had a constant supply of loot to replace/repair your system.
Again just my humble opinion .

Thank you. I apologise for getting my hackles up as well. I haven't had time to try the new build yet, I'm looking forward to doing so. I'm fine with exertion having an increased effect and agree that recovery from it was too quick under the old system, but I don't think it should take a dedicated resting period to recover from it, I think passive recovery is better. I'm not married to the old system at all and expect the new system to be altered and tweaked over the next few revisions with player feedback, so I'm quite content to see where it goes.I'm also extremely pleased that the developers added the option to tweak the effects of exertion in sandbox. I don't want to force my notion of how things should be on the developers, it's their game. I'm happy to be met halfway.

So Florin, let's maybe focus on the future instead of the past. What could TIS do that would make the new system feel good for you? Are you willing to give it a chance or are you only willing to accept the old system back?

As I mentioned elsewhere, would you be okay with having timed actions/inventory management quickly regenerate your exertion so that you're actually encouraged to do things in between slaying zombies/exploring? Spend some time in a house messing with inventory or cooking your raw food, or building something and exertion could come back up? The point of the system is to get you to do other things than fight or run, and it sounds like that's what you do/want to do as well.

I honestly do want to work with you and anyone else who doesn't like the current iteration to get something worked out we can all enjoy. I apologize if I'm coming off blunt, that's not my intent. The current system is something I've been asking for for a long time so I hope you can understand that it's a bit frustrating when I feel like you're dismissing it out of hand without giving it a chance (or trying it after it's been balanced).

Have you tried a new game in the latest update today? Do you feel like that's a step in the right direction?

Again, I apologize if I've been letting my frustration show towards you. We both want the same thing, which is for PZ to continue to grow and flourish. I hope we can work together towards that goal.

To me, it reads as if his complaint is that the new system forces you to sit down to relax instead of just recovering slowly; i.e. activities having a longer effect on you. Would mirror my own experience, dragging the gameplay down and just not appearing fun to me. That's without trying to kill "hordes", just a few stragglers both with a leveled up character (which you can't argue should happen) and with a fresh start.

The main issue I have with the new exhaustion system is similar to Florin's. As you stockpile your safe house the distance you need to travel from home to "the front" increases. Walking that increasing distance is just boring and stopping every fifth house you see to pull up a chair so you can sprint the distance isn't better, more challenging or fun.
Then once you do hit the front line you run into the same issues while looting. Zombies guard loot because area's you haven't visited still have loot and zombies, so you have to do combat in order to loot. Stopping after every small pack, which are with the new clumping mechanic definitely more challenging, is not fun or challenging.
The old "pull back for 10 seconds to wait for exertion" system wasn't good either. You could spend all day every day clearing zombies and snatching up loot. But now even getting to the point in gameplay where I kill zombies and loot stuff is tedious and the combat itself is easier as long as you take it in small bursts with downtime in between. It reminds me of having to drink water back when I played WoW vs timing your spell casts to get some spirit regen.

I understand this is all experimental due to the nature of the IWBUMS branch and I still love the game. This is just my two cents on the three page discussion.

Keep up the good work devs!

I'd like to be able to re-use jars. Eat your mayonnaise and pickles, then jar some stuff!

And whoever said canned strawberries would be bad: You really need to try "jam". It's delicious!

But you shouldn't be fighting large groups, that's the thing. No changes to the system are going to accommodate that, as previously said.

    No, not normal at all.
When trying to create a new game, does the same thing happen? If so, you may want to try manually deleting the game files in the installation directory: %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Steam\SteamApps\Common\ProjectZomboid
Sometimes Steam just has trouble updating a few files.
