For what is worth, it really does give the old feel of nostalgia.
Waking up in your base, open the curtains, and you see a big horde just roaming around the street in front of you.

Feels great to see that number of zombies in the game, i been attacked 3 times over the course of a week, finally i feel like barricading is a MUST to be able to sustain a attack of zombies.

Had  a great experience, some meta sound happen way north at dusk, went to my safehouse after stealing from my neighbors house, cant take the main road back so i go jumping from backyard to backyard until i reach my home.

The streets were clear with a few zombies here and there moving (like 7 in total), after a few minutes however, the i start to hear a lot of moaning, there is a MASSIVE horde coming from the main road from downtown West Point going to the farm house, as soon as i close the curtains i see a few zombies coming my way, one of them bang the door, then more banging starts, the sound from the bangs in the door draws a good portion of zombies from the horde to my house, i take whatever i can and go into the backyard and into the neighbor house, i sleep there and next morning i see all the zombies spread out in my safehouse with a broken door and broken windows, i make a Molotov and burn down the infested house, after that i realize is my third day and i almost died.

That is amazing, it made me value that day because i survived it, lost my gear but i made it though it.

That isnt what you wanted? Survival mode begin hard as hell on earth and make you value each day you are alive?

Also on my opnion on EasyPickins pictures, i like the second one more, the third one comes close to it, but has a LOT of black area near the houses i guess, i would expect it the other way around, a concentrated red dot on the middle, and spreading out thought the main roads, and the forest begin more black areas than zombies.

I beg you, please don't change it at all, don't lower the amount back to 31, i will knee before you if necessarily, don't make the game easy again, i don't want this game to be Sims 2.0 With a few groups of zombies edition.

I know how you feel, but is really manageable, you learn how to adapt really quick.
For me is always taking the back exit of every building possible, never go to the main roads, jump across the high walls covering backyards.
In case you want to loot a store, i found a good strategy is lure them with Q, lure them as far as possible keeping a eye out for them and a possible horde in front of you, then you must hit a Forest sooner or later, travel between the woods and go back to the store, a few zombies will be there, sneak if you can, if you cant however, you will have to rush the store, loot what you can and get the hell out.

Right now i have supplies for at least 6 days, right now i am looking for a generator for the fridge since electricity will go away soon.

You need to decide how are you going to play the game.

    Edit:
I just died and i loved every second of it.
A alarm went off while trying to get some canned food and water, i went full panic mode and hid in the bathroom (normal tactic i used to use prior build 32)

I waited out a bit like i always do, waiting for them to leave or something, i though to myself there were going to be 10 zombies at most inside the house since that was the amount of zombies i saw earlier.

Then i found myself trapped in this:

This feels amazing, it felt fair because it was on my part and choice that led me to death, i love it.

Totally my bad for the "invincible" zombie, Tim fixed it, i'll release a version in a few hours with other fixes.

About difficulty, well, it's new, so yeah, lot of people are thinking "omg it's too hard, tune down zombie", but the game is meant to be difficult, and yeah, it's new, so you're not used to it, IWBUMS is out for 3 days, and some are crying because they can't beat the game? Well, that sound like a good thing to me!
I'll check with some of our best players what they really think, but don't think we'll lower zombies right away, maybe it's time for some people to go back in sandbox and tune down a bit the difficulty?

I agree, I'm not sure it should be toned all the way back to 31. I'd rather have it the same or somewhere close to 32 levels. "Zombies are hard, game is hard" is what we've been shooting for this whole time, and we were fully expecting complaints about the difficulty when it got the "right" level. I think we're pretty close to the right level now. And if there was a bug in the math, is it possible these are the levels Lemmy originally intended for the zombies?

I haven't tried but eating from a can gives you an empty can?

You could improvise stuff from garbage, empty cans to make a nail bomb, a noise trap (the line of rope and several cans attached to it), hell you could even replace the cooking pot and use a empty can to boil water.

From potato chips you could use them for foil with a battery to light up a campfire, stuff like that.

Also it would add a lot to the game, found a base and see a dead NPC inside, a lot of empty cans, empty potato chips and cereal boxes around, pointing out he died of starvation.

Or make it something in between those numbers?

Late game is not going to be fixed yet, i mean the zombie count is going to keep rising until it hits the limit of the zone, but that doesn't mean that the zombies will find you and your base and fock things up.

Unless we get hordes migration where if you make very heavy noise zombies will walk in your base direction, i dont think we are going to see late game fixed.

Also is Beginner mode already in the game?

Blasted_Taco reacted to Zorak in Claim Safehouse!
Well if claming the house will just make all walls, baricades etc undestructable that will work. If you lock and baricade your house other players wont be able to destroy door -> your safe. You leave your door open -> your fault but then  again if you keep your stuff in locked crates (padlocks) they cant destroy or open them so loot will be safe ( no need for no-loot option).
The only concerns i have is that in last build you spend a lot of time cooding keys and padlocks and now no one will use them coz you can just claim house to make it 100% safe.
IMO keeping just protection vs fire and destroying parts of safehouse (doors, windows etc) will keep the realism of the game on high lvl and make keys and padlocks usefull (right now they useless in MP coz griefers will just destroy door or you crate to get the loot).

Blasted_Taco reacted to lemmy101 in NPC questions I want answered
Will there be different skill levels of dragons?

When dragons are spawned they will be given a random profession, traits, personality. As well as this they will be given a skill / xp boost inline with the amount of time since the start of the apocalypse. At that point they will gain XP normally for the time they are alive within the game code.

Will there be fathers/sons and can you start the game with a dragon family member?

Every dragon will have the potential to be a family member of other dragons in the dragon lair at the moment they are spawned. We want sister dragon/brother dragon, paired dragon clutches of either gender, mother dragon and young child dragons. The only restriction on this is that all dragons will be adult. We're not having any hatchling dragons for various reasons.

Will there be big groups of dragons (6+) that have no affiliation to you?

Very much so. We'll spawn smaller groups of dragons, and these are the ones more likely to have relationships between each other. These small dragon groups will then combine in the meta-game from the start onward, and the more time has passed if we ever need to spawn a new group then that time will influence the group size.

How many total (hostile/neutral/friendly) dragons will there be on the map at one time?

Potentially hundreds. It's not clear at this stage, but since most dragons will be far from the player and thus using simplified meta game processing and thus won't need complicated flight mechanics and flame breath animations, it means we could have hundreds feasibly without too much impact on the processing.

    Will new dragons spawn?

Yes. We'll have migrant dragons flying in the side of the map frequently to keep the numbers up (while still having a downward trend in the amount of dragons you find as the population dwindles) but the meta game will allow dragons to survive as long as we wish, it's not a case of the combat and survival AI of dragons needs to keep them alive as a player would, so we can keep specific dragons the player meets alive long enough to become antagonists that impact the game for a long time.

    Will the dragons be tamable?

Dragons will be able to join your nest, as well as you having the ability to join (with any other dragons you've tamed) their nest. Whether the dragon likes and trusts you will determine if they are tamable, or if they will be openly hostile toward you, as well as who would be the alpha dragon of the nest.

Can the dragons kill you on sight?

Yes. Though the sadistic AI director will probably step in to make sure their first flame breath isn't lethal or on path if it comes without warning.

Will there be situations where a husband flies into a zombie infested gigamart to try and save his dragon mate?

This is the sort of zombie/dragon movie scene we're going to be looking at in terms of these event scenarios, so I'd very much like to think so.

Will there be situations where your best friend gets bit and he has to be taken out somehow?

    See above.

Will there be situations where that new tamed dragon eats you in your sleep?

Possibly. We need to keep the gameplay fair in terms of signposting. This may qualify as not fun for many, it's nice to have some kind of warning of foreshadowing.

    Is the military considered dragons?

The military do have dragon rider members in the canon, but we're looking to get vanilla dragons in first before tackling military dragon riders. At this time we're only comfortable commiting to normal dragons but we've wanted to do military versions since the start so will be a priority once the normal dragons are released.

Also you can cook food while boiling water too i think, but you just could leave the water boiling while you go and do something else.
For fuel? Just use the clothes of the dead zombies outside your base, take their shoes, fancy pants and sweaters and add it to the fire, put the pot there and just go and do something else, after that just pour it on bottles and you should be fine.

Here is a picure of the behaviour debugger doing its thing poking into the brains of AI NPCs brains:

For more details on how behaviour trees work, look here: http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/ChrisSimpson/20140717/221339/Behavior_trees_for_AI_How_they_work.php

At this point most of the survival behaviours are in. NPCs can loot for food, barricade, will stockpile water, hang sheets on curtains, change dirty bandages, sew deep wounds, and all the stuff to keep them alive (am currently coding in specific looting targets based on items the characters want, say going specifically to Cortman Medical for medical gear). Their combat skillz ain't too great, but since there is a big combat rewrite incoming with the new animations there is zero point in working on zombie (or npc -> npc/player) combat as it'll all need rewriting once that goes in (and that will be released before NPCs, almost certainly), so at the moment am focusing on group interactions.  Group interactions use an entirely different system built based on inspiration from Crusader Kings 2 using xml driven event chains to describe story beats in kind of mini-plots that will be stitched together..

Currrently writing an event chain for when a group walks toward a safehouse of npcs. What happens if a patrolling guard spots you, what happens if a guard at a window sees you, what happens if you get spotted while trying to jimmy a window on the safehouse, what happens if you're spotted inside the safehouse. Each of these will lead to their own consequences, branching events based on the personalities of the people both in the safehouse, and the people approaching the safehouse. From a stand off with shotguns to begging for help dealing with some raiders, there will be all manner of outcomes based on numerous factors. We're going to have all these 'storylets ' that branch in numerous ways, and pieced together we hope they will make for a Walking Dead story like experience that's different each time*

Idea is to build a whole metric ton of branching possibilities for single events, so that they can play out dramatically different.

    * without actual game wide plot arcs considered and discussed and written by a team of writers, the results are unlikely to be as narratively sound and tight as a TV show story or purposefully written main quest game story, however we hope for enough variation that it feels like a unique story each time.

Nothing has changed about durability in the last build.

The crafted items are meant to be poor quality and to get you by temporarily.

If you think a wood stick is a fighting tool capable of killing a horde of zombies, you've got another thing coming.

I'm gonna give you a friendly reminder here: if you want to give feedback, that's fine, but I need you to stop saying stuff like "terrible design" as:

    A) You're not qualified to make that judgement, and
    B) It's not lovely

We've had no other complaints about durability of items in the last 6 months that I can call to mind, and nothing has changed about it in this build as far as I'm aware. I'm sorry you don't find recent changes to your liking, and while we're open to feedback, please keep in mind the game TIS is making isn't all about you, it's about what everyone likes.

Enigma is spot on. A water barrel, bucket, or other container wouldn't collect much water. You need a water collection method. Personally, I'm a fan of making a Plumber skill the pre-eminent domain for water survival. My idea detailed here.

Rain collection devices like roofs, tarps, etc. don't collect potable water. You can tilt your head up in rain and drink safely, but not enough to stave off dehydration. Same with clean containers like buckets and barrels. But you can't drink water that has flowed over a roof unless you like getting diseases from bird shit. True water sustainability requires purification of non-potable water. Or a clean source like a spring or well. But it's a moot point unless we get different kinds of water.

Plumbers understand water pressure, piping, and mechanical pumps. Carpenters make shit out of wood. There is some overlap, but long term water sustainability requires plumbing knowledge, not Carpentry.

I love the new skills and profession system, i really want to get my hands on it, i love when you can build different characters like in Cataclysm DDA, but the one concern i have with this new system is that when is out, i am like 80% sure that most people will play Carpenter only.

Both in SP and MP, for the reason alone of begin a carpenter equals to have a infinite water source.

I feel like i am railroaded to be a carpenter on all the playthoughs or servers for the sole reason of water, i know that you can still go to toilets and get some water, but still some day that water is going to be dry or that area is going to get infested for X reason.

Why cant we draw water from the river? I think we have the items (bleach, campfire or maybe add tablets) to atleast boil the water and drink it.

Or some bucket? Maybe a tarp? If we have more options other than carpentery to gain water, i think more people would use different professions or not begin a harden carpenter of 1 week old apocalypse?

Is really the only complain i have, i dont like having to be a carpenter to be able to get water, what if i want to be a overweight, asthmatic, anti social NEET in the game?

I would be able to get water from toilets and sinks sure, but if i want to live in the woods, i need to have some barrels with me otherwise i will die of thirst.

Pls tell me that you guys are adding the TV and Radio programs next update

Its more of a concern that the carpentry trait will be a "must have" if there is not an alternate means of water collection available. Were hoping to not see "MUST HAVE" traits like before with light drinker + brooding + short tempered. Its not about the fact that it costs 4 points to grab, a lot of people simply don't want to see it as mandatory.

Honestly, there is already easy solutions to infinite water + food without rain barrels. But for anyone wanting to setup a permanent location without rain barrels that doesn't involve a well is where the problem is. Even your most basic rain barrel was moved to level 3, and at a 1/3 XP penalty, it would take you 5700 XP to reach that if you didn't take any of the traits and were unfortunate to not find any skill books (keep in mind as well barricading was fixed to provide no XP). That's 1900 planks sawed at current rates, taking 950 trees cut down.

So yeah, everyone could suck it up and take that 4 point trait, but then it simply becomes an illusion for choice when its "required". Anyways, this whole thread is moot when they said they are providing alternate means, but this post here only served the purpose of aggravating others when water collection isn't even necessarily the main concern.
