I do like the idea of using boom boxes for distracting zombies. They were going out of fashion in the 90s due to the walkman but there were still plenty of them about. The distraction would only last for a minute or two because them things used to eat battery's

Whilst not 90s per-say, I'd like a Nokia 3310 to double as a walkie-talkie and throwable or mountable weapon (Nokia 3310 warhammer anyone?)
But seriously, these are great ideas, and personally I love the sort of feel older stuff gives off. Would prefer anywhere from the 50s to 90s theme for the setting anyday over a modern theme.
Where are the gumball machines? Arcades? Lemonade stands? Flux capacitors?

The Nokia 3210 could be a blunt weapon and a thrown weapon. Also, it should have infinite durability. And playing snake should reduce your cone of vision and circle of perception to 0.

So I was reading the IPOD post today and laughing because most kids probably have no clue what it was like before the 2000's.

I remember land line phones with horrible long tangled phone chords. Speaking of... where are the phone lines? Or power lines?

    (Can you hear me now?)

Or pole/ground transformers?(No utility buildings or services anywhere actually! Hell I haven't even seen sewers? I assume transformers would make more sense because the street poles run underground)

Phone booths were everywhere! Yeah places where you had to publicly share phones because they weren't implanted to the side of your face yet!

Yes Walkman's, boomboxes, record players and even jukeboxes were still around.

    (That's my kind of BOOMbox!)

Square boxy cars like the Caprice and Grand Marquis. (I don't care about vehicles being implemented but I would think a skateboard/bike would be awesome!)

No FOTO huts? How are we suppose do develop our film?!?!

(AHHhhh it's the Libyans and Gaddafi is pissed his photo's weren't developed in an hour..... wtf)

Curling irons,  blow dryers, snow shovels, plow trucks, pda's, DOS computers, shortwave radios and most especially GUTTERS?!? I know people have gutters with rain barrels attached because I do this to water my RL plants. I think it should def be considered.

    (Blow dryer/Walkman usage )

Anyways this is just a happy post to reminisce and suggest some more 90's and other related ideas.

Please have fun and share your 90's forgotten ideas!

    Mondoid, 2nd December, 2013

Once upon a time Mondays were exclusively reserved for comic strip cats to make snide observations about while discussing lasagne and/or their owner’s love life.
Well, no more. Monday’s now for Mondoid – your one stop shop (Hi Mathas!) for everything that’s happening deep inside Project Zomboid development.

Stabilisin’ / Bug fixin’ / Beta build releasin’
Fixing up for the next Steam beta build is still progressing, and we’re hoping for a public beta to go out today. It’s possible it already has by the time you read this. We’ll see where we are before this Mondoid is posted and if it’s already been released then we’ll say ‘Yes! Released!” here and link to its thread on Steam: [sorry, not released yet].
This past weekend has been awash with bugs fixes, and we launched this upcoming beta branch build build to our internal testers for feedback.

Bug fixes relating to farming, carpentry as well as some UI polish have also been completed. You can read the complete upcoming beta change list (along with the current beta features that are still new and upcoming to non beta and Desura peeps) in the following thread: http://steamcommunity.com/app/108600/discussions/0/648812305221475882/

As always work on performance, plugging up memory leaks and other important tasks are still going – and going well. With this coming beta build  we hope to see some improvement on most systems. As we say in the beta thread though, it may take a few versions to get where we want to be – so if you still have problems, have hope.

We’re also looking into auto-detecting the need for Compatibility Mode to avoid the black screen issues, and already hope to have reduced the number of instances dramatically. Then again we’re unlikely to have gotten them all, so again – this will be an ongoing effort throughout the next few patches if necessary.

    Buildin’ hordes
We got lots of enthusiastic ‘thumbs up’ motions from our internal testers when we gave them the upcoming build – especially in relation to its rebalanced (read: raised) zombie counts. New survivors should beware… hordes are coming back, and they’re not pleasant to deal with.

We’re braced for a torrent of ‘OMG too many zombies’ forum posts when the build hits, but we think it necessary to get the zed-count and difficulty levels back to what it was in pre-Steam Muldraugh. You’re gonna get munched, but that’s how things roll in and around Knox Country…

    Repairin’ weapons
In and amongst his bug hunt RJ (Romain) has crafted a new weapon repair system that’ll be part of the upcoming beta build. This involves a bunch of the new items that we’ve recently added to the game, weapon condition stats and a couple of new traits. You can find details in this forum thread: http://theindiestone.com/forums/index.php/topic/3735-the-fixing-system/

Designin’ long awaited NPC / Meta-Game stuff
Okay we’re not ready to go into too many details, as we’ve run into the issue of blowing our load way too early and hyping everyone up a little too much on the NPCs issue in the past.
    BUT…

This week we’ve made some massive strides in terms of designing the high level meta-game in such a way that it should dramatically ease the work that’ll be involved when it comes to restarting full-scale NPC development.

It’s also safe to say that the approach we’ve opened up can potentially open up better, more interesting results – as well as open up some ace future gameplay possibilities for the Sadistic AI Director component. Especially when it comes to… erm… multiplayer.

Oh man, so many PZ excitement buzzwords in once place! Please don’t get in too much of a tizz over all this just yet, this is all a fair ways off, but we’re building the NPC metagame framework again – and it feels good.

    Love y’all.

    TIS

PS: we still get quite a few questions about how to get a Steam key if PZ was previously bought from Desura (or Google Checkout, way back in the day), so if you’re wondering about this, please check out this page: http://projectzomboid.com/blog/2013/11/returning-to-pz/

I wrote a tiny tool, for Un/Packing .pack files.

    .pack Format
The .pack files contain all used textures in PZ.
    The structure is the following:

    Features:
    1. Unpack: .pack files into seperated .png files (extra info is saved in a .xml file)
    2. Pack: .pack file is (re)pack with the .xml file and all .png files
    3. Split: all seperated .png files get split up in their containing (sub-texture) .png files
    4. Merge: merge (sub-texture) png files to one huge png.
    4. XMLview : view the resulting .xml file and edit its content

    Coming features:
Split and Merge for Character.pack ?

    Download:
    https://www.mediafire.com/folder/8a37ath7zayyd/Project%20Zomboid
ChangeLog:29-Dec-2013-fixed some 'cleanup' problems (thanks Aardman55 for complaining ^^)28-Dec-2013-managed to unpack the Characters.pack file; Had fun with the new DDS format that is used for the character textures .-. -Added merge function for splitted .png files This function does (currently) not work for the .dds files24-Nov-2013-Changed the 'viewXML'-option again -.-; Now i wrote it all myself and didn't just use foreign code. (And it looks better now ^^)-Added 'Save'-option to the XMLView, now you can easily edit the .xml file23-Nov-2013-Added 'viewXML'-option for better reading of the .xml file

Streaming issues fixed. Fire saving fixed. Fixed some missing sprite building. The bigs logs at McCoy are now containers with logs inside. Removed options.bin for an options.ini (text file). Fixed the trailer park map problem (can't pass through doors, invisible walls, weird light issue..). Balanced loot drop. Added more specific location to loot items (police station = more guns, school = more books/school bag...). Fixed some tile properties problem (container not solid...) Extra options for lighting quality and FPS lock (30,45,60). Defaults to 30FPS for more stable FPS. Download:
Add the game to your Steam library. If you haven't done that yet, go here: http://www.desura.com/games/project-zomboid/keys
Once the game is in your Steam library, right click it and select "Properties".
Navigate to the "Betas" tab and select "Beta - testing version available to all" from the dropdown.
Do NOT enter any key there.
Start the game to let it update.

Version number in game is still showing as 0009. This is all Rathlord's fault
