I believe zombie re-spawn mechanics will be a key towards keeping us threatened throughout the game. How so?
Think minecraft; in minecraft; monsters have a chance to spawn wherever the light level is under a certain threshold.
What do you do first in minecraft to survive ? Block monster spawn at your safe-place by lighting it up with a few torches.

We recently got a re-spawn parameter in the sandbox options; basically my point is it's own limitations are by far too strict.
    How so?
Spawning is limited in tiles you have visited within your sandbox interval AND tiles inside you have created player contraptions.
    - First, building a single barricade will limit re-spawn in an entire tile
    - Secondly, a tile if i recall correctly, is a HUGE square on the map (think an entire block of houses)

I think the re-spawn mechanics are currently mis-tweaked as it inevitably will only work on tiles you have not played yet, therefor not changing anything in your own game-play.
Once you've cleared the street you live in, you're probably not going to see anything happen anymore.

Then there's also the problem of making zombies you haven't loaded actually roam as hordes.

Pretty simple suggestion, actually. Just noticed that despite all the limping and blue/green skin tones, at this point in time, the undead don't look all that dead.

Just thought I'd point this out, as the original zombie sprites were all decrepit and gross. It'd probably be an idea to do the same to these guys. Also had the idea of a fly sound effect when you're in close proximity to a large number of zombies/corpses. A bit like when you hear the crackling from the fire from up close.

Only since the scariest bit I've always found about zombies is that they're all gross and rotting, which is why the 28 days later style zombie never really freaked me out.

Feedback? I think the flies sound effect is pretty simple/boss to be honest.

I know the idea of "special" zombies is verboten, but I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more variation among the glorious hordes we face. And I like touching third rails of forum topics so here goes.

I offer for your consideration several additional zombie variants. These zombies are not "special" in that they conform to standard lore, but like the Crawler have some specific differences that add to the challenge. No tool using or exploding zombies, just regular old walking dead with some clever twists...
Climber - A zombie like the Crawler but missing its entire lower torso. The lower mass allows the zombie to climb things like sheet ropes and rough surfaces like player built walls. Slow like a turtle but determined as fuck.Game-play issue addressed: Safety players feel from hiding up on a second story. "Jim, did you remember to pull up the sheet rope and barricade the window when you came in? You didn't? Ahhh! Kill me now!" Howler - A regular zombie that hasn't lost its full vocal functions yet and howls more loudly when prey is spotted, attracting additional zombies to an area. An upgrade from the current aggro sound that rarely pulls the entire horde along when a player is spotted. The loudest recorded human voice is around 117-119 decibels. A zombie who doesn't give two shits about blowing out its vocal cords should be able to match this volume at least once.Game-play issue addressed: Counters player tactic of approaching a horde just enough to peel off a couple of zombies at a time to dispatch (Rope-a-dope). These could be rare. But the psychological torture inflicted upon the player encountering a lone zombie would be delicious. "Not only do some houses have alarms, but now some zombies do to? Ahhh! Kill me now!" Floater - A regular zombie that spawns out of lakes and rivers.Game-play issue addressed: The safety players feel around bodies of water. Adds suspense to fishing. Island safety? I don't think so. Imagine a graphic that plays of the water rippling and a zombie slowly emerging from the water when a player gets close. "What do you mean it's not safe to fish at night anymore? They can come crawling up out of the water? Ahhh! Kill me now!" Hider - A regular zombie that lays down like a corpse in tall grass or under beds, but stands up when a player is detected close by.Game-play issue addressed: Lack of urine in player's shorts after gameplay and looting becomes routine. "They can hide under beds now! Ahhh! My pants!" Dragon - A dragon.Game-play issue addressed: Lack of dragons. "Ahhh! Huh?!?!" Thoughts? Disagree?

And i'm dead... 6 days 17 hours. Shouldn't have expected more from myself...
If i were to rate my own scenario... on a fallout 3 level, the content i left in the save file could be an optional objective of a side quest in the outer regions of the map. At best. (but i swear i tried)

Any website i can use to upload the save without installing any program ?
It didn't work that way in my time when we would share our content on internet and i REFUSE to be forced to install anything to upload stuff on the interwebs. Its been a few years i didnt use hosting services...

Thanks mate; couldn't be arsed to spend more then 10 min looking for a reliable website which would not ask me to download anything.
Its a shame really nowadays every single website comes with a registration form towards downloading a P2P launcher which will then download another program to synchronize with the goddamn website with a cool "old people designed" interface with big smily buttons. Which also take 250mo in your ram half the time.

Let's assume for a moment that a few features have already been added:
NPC's (of all types, good and bad) NPC relationships NPC companions NPC infection NPC management More Baldspot and Kate Ability to lock doors More map (suburbs of Louisville) Sneaking animations Overhauled UI Radio/TV What is your top ten list of features you would like to see added next? (For a reminder, features listed as a tentative yes are listed in the Spoiler tags). You aren't limited to this list, just a reminder.

These would be my top ten in descending order of preference:

    10. Fire Improvement (putting out fire, random fires starting, burns, return of Molotov cocktails)
    9. More dangers (accidents with tools, option for zombies to get more difficult as game progresses, miasma, dirty water, mental health issues)
    8. More Mod Tools (everything we have is amazing - give us more!)
    7. More crafting (more recipes, uses for concrete, makeshift zombie traps)
    6. Wheelbarrows, dollies and shopping carts
    5. New Skills
    4. Variant Zombies
    3. Barricading with and moving furniture
    2. Hunting
    1. Animals

I didn't include "Vehicles". While I'd like to see broken down cars, trucks, and vans littering the landscape, I'm concerned working vehicles would "shrink the map" too much. I'm also worried they would look too cheesy. How would they even get down the roads without crashing into a zombie. Hitting one would total a car. I'm not sold on Vehicles at the moment.

Jatta Pake got a reaction from Keshash in Skills (a.k.a more stuff for RJ to work on!)
If the flurry of new skills added in the recent builds prove anything, it's that more skill options are just plain awesome. Some of the suggestions below are ones already made, but I'll repeat them anyway so RJ has a single post to review for all the new skills.

Foraging (Upgrade) - At the higher levels, Foraging should spawn medicinal plants and roots that are native to Kentucky. This would justify a Foraging Skill Book. These medicinal plants could be Cooked for use in First Aid.
Spiked Blazing Star - painkiller. Perhaps made like tea. Goldenseal - antibiotic if eaten or antiseptic if made like a tea. American Ginseng - exhaustion/fatigue cure. Perhaps made like a tea. Witch Hazel - anti inflammation, anti bleeding and burns. Rub directly on skin. Scavenging - Requires a tool. Functions like a reverse carpentry skill. Non-player made items like furniture, tables, cabinets, can be "Scavenged" to produce things like nails and planks.

Animal Husbandry - Needs animals to be added to the game but would allow for the breeding and caring for farm animals. Part of the fun of this skill would be the animal noises continually attracting zombies.
Chickens - Need to build Chicken Coop. Spawns eggs. Must be fed Worms and Maggots. Rabbits - Need to build Rabbit Hutch. Spawns more Rabbits. Must be fed Weeds. Goats - Need a fenced in area to keep them from wandering off. Can be milked for Goat Milk. Just needs a large enough area of grass. Bees - Need to build a Top-Bar Hive. Spawns Honey. Pigs - Need to build a Sty. Spawns more Pigs. Must be fed food but can use Rotten food. Masonry - This would be the skill used to construct things with cement and brick/mortar. In addition to sturdier fortifications, the higher Masonry skill would allow construction of the following:
Brick Oven - Required for baking and higher skilled Cooking. A grill can only do so much. Also allows baking of earthenware bowls etc with low level of Pottery.  Kiln - Required for making items at higher Pottery Skill like make Bricks, Charcoal and Cement. Also used to Dry foods. Forge - Required for Blacksmithing. Requires Charcoal to operate. Smelting nails. Pottery - Seems like a useless survival skill, right? First, the Pottery skill would allow the Player to find dig up Clay.  After constructing or finding a Brick Oven to bake foods that last longer, Pottery skill would use that oven for other items:
Bowls, Plates, Knives Jars and Pots for Food Preservation With a Kiln you could add a range of other items:
Water Filtration Components Charcoal (for Forge and Water Filtration) Bricks Cement Casts for cast iron mechanical components Mechanics - At lower levels, allows the construction of lifting tools. At higher levels, can repair cars and gas generators. Allows makeshift:
Wheelbarrow Pulley Can Opener Hand Operated Water Pump (requires cast iron mechanical components) Blacksmithing - Requires a forge to make nails. Can be used to melt stuff to make cast iron mechanical components.

Wait a minute. Does the world item carry over to the new character in same world too? Then it would be better for each player to write a note or diary about their journey, and place it in place that they are going. Maybe a hint or warning too.

I've updated the Original Post with the following:

    Updated Post (Jan 23, 2015):

Welcome! This thread hosts previously saved games from a single game I started called a "Legacy Game".  All players are welcome to join in the fun!

How this works: A player (anyone) downloads the latest save game (usually found towards the end of the most recent string of posts in this thread). The game is played until the character dies. Then the save is made available for the next player in this thread. (You can sign up for a free Dropbox account and put your save there, then post a link to download it in this thread). Installing save games is detailed at the bottom of this post.

    FAQ:
Does the previous world and items carry over when the save is played by the next player? YES! For this reason, most players are keeping a journal in game to record their character's experiences. Later players will be able to find these journals. How long can I play my character in game? You can survive in game as long as you want. Live one day or eleven months. How long can I play my character in real life? Try to be aware that other players may be waiting for you to finish before playing your save. Most people play for a few days maximum but there is no rule. Keep in mind that if you are "bogarting" the save with a long play, someone may come along and start a new timeline. What happens if two people start playing the same save? Won't this get confusing? Yes it can be done, and yes it will get confusing. What will happen is that additional timelines will start to appear from the rip in the fabric of PZ space-time. Nothing wrong with that! We will call it the multiverse and probably start giving names to all the different timelines, like Legacy-616 and Legacy-911. The more the merrier. Can I use mods? Yes. But be courteous and let players know when you offer your save. Keep in mind some (most?) people may not want to play with mods activated so your timeline might die off. But I'm ok with timelines appearing that use mods. Legacy-Raincoat? Legacy-420? What if some jerk plays a save, goes around burning down the entire town, and uses up all the loot? Won't that ruin the game for the next guy? I think it will be survival of the fittest for timelines. Personally, I wouldn't want to play a save after someone did that. I would just play an earlier save and then post that save when I'm done. So if you want your save to become part of a continuing timeline, I'd suggest being lovely to your successors. Otherwise natural selection will cull your character from the lengthening multiverse. Final thoughts: Most people are role playing their characters rather than power gaming a long survival time. Focus tends to be on leaving journals over massive bases. Just a general guideline, not a rule.

    Simple little mod.

This mod simply allows you to spawn a pen and journal on your character by pressing "P" on your keyboard.

Purpose: I like to give my character a back story when playing, and I often want to write something up. But my starting house doesn't always have a pen and journal. So this mod allows you to spawn this right away when you start a new character.  (You can then turn the mod off the next time you play your save.)

Credits go to the staff here as the code is just a modified version of the Add Items lua featured in the tutorials. Happy writing!

I like this idea only if the work is being done in a dangerous manner - in the rain, while exhausted, intoxicated, terrified, or feverish. Penalty shouldn't be any worse than a broken window cut.
This would be a great reason to add Safety Equipment to the game. Work gloves, eye protection, hard hat. Safety Equipment could also speed up your work time and let you build faster.

Yeah, I vote for the "injuries only when doing work impaired" option. Random chance of injury while doing things that are practically mandatory does not for good game design make. Random injuries while doing things in hazardous but for the most part avoidable conditions is a better option. Should I finish building the wall? It's raining so I could slip and have an accident, but those zombies won't keep themselves out.

I know its a joke, but let me take the opportunity to say that some kind of fix for the sheet rope should be implemented. Let it be that you cannot use it when over-loaded... Or give those sheet durability... or whatever.

Safe-house balance would only be possible when we cannot build in the middle of the air, and when we get some kind of "con" from the sheet ropes. These two problems together are an invulnerability card.

Why can't I put some gloves? Why can't I use some cloths to wrap my hand on it before removing the glasses? Getting injured becase you are in a hurry makes all the sense in the world. You are choosing the less of two evils. Getting injured because once that window is broken you have no way of removing the glass... not so much sense

I find this an interesting nuance of the game actually.

Basically when Im looting houses now, I never close the window and always 'curtain' all houses in the immediate vicinity

Thing is, you dont want zombies to smash windows, it does make it more risky that zombies could just climb through, but you never want a window to be smashed, it makes too much noise and would attract even more zombies.  Also, you dont want to be forced into jumping through a broken window..  so just leave them open

Also, climbing through a broken window is one of the few ways to get an injury right now,  Think I'd rather keep it the way it is for now

But I suppose the 'Realists' out there would argue "Hey, I could easy use my bat to remove broken glass in *real life* so why cant I in game?"

    xD
