duh7 reacted to bugme in Some inaccuracy
Hello. Being that the devs seem to be a bunch of cheeky brits, I see that you may need some help with accuracy of weapons. I don't mean how straight they shoot, I mean "historical accuracy." I'll also pose some other accuracy suggestions ITT that I think would improve the game without any drawback I can think of.

-Modern M1911 magazines appear to be 8 round, not 7 round. In the setting of this game, the majority of M1911 magazines would surely be 8 rounds.
-Desert Eagle is more commonly chambered in 50 AE and not 44 magnum, but in the interest of not having too many ammo types, you may want to keep this the way it is.
-The Beretta M9 is a notoriously unreliable gun.
-Armalite platform guns (including the M16) being unreliable is a myth that has been debunked.
-The M14 actually shoots 7.62 NATO and not .308 winchester. They are basically the same round, except .308 winchester is higher pressure. Putting this round in a M14 would cause it to potentially fail in a dangerous way (the gun would explode).
-The M14 does not actually look like an M14. Despite the fact that you changed the model, it still looks more like a Mini-14 to me. I would change the model back to the old version, however, I would use the magazine from the new version. The new version has a much more correct sized magazine. To make it historically accurate, I would make it hold 30 rounds, and I would make it either .223 or 5.56. This makes even more sense, as the Mini-14 was never a military rifle, so it would be found in police stations and homes, etc.
-The Remington rifles. Oh boy. I would not use "MSR" as a name because it sounds like Mauser. The likelihood of an American owning a Mauser rifle is very small. I'd maybe just name them R700 and R788. The MSR700 looks like a Remington 700, and I assume the MSR788 is a Remington 788. There's a lot of problems here. The model used for the Remington 700 shows that is has a detachable 10 round magazine, but when you use it in game, it for some reason has a non-detachable 3-round magazine. This is very incorrect, the 3d model of the gun does not match the actual in-game functionality at all. The 788 looks very incorrect. Other than the problems with the stock, the 788 also has huge magazine problems. The model shows a large magazine, but in game, you can only hold 3 rounds. In real life, the 788 uses a very short detachable 3 round magazine. Basically, make the magazine shorter on the 3d model.
-JS2000 is a strange name for a shotgun. It sounds like it would be some kind of sci-fi laser blaster or something. The gun looks like a Remington 870. Maybe call it an R870?

Another thing: no pawn shops? In rural Kentucky? I think they'd be a good addition. They would have fewer guns, and would also have things like watches, jewelry, electronics, etc. Apparently there's one in Louisville but that's all I could find. Maybe I missed some.

Another another thing: the cars. There's a euro-like sports car, a totally-not-a-Corvette, a totally-not-an-Impala, and another 4 door. The most well known American performance car is the muscle car. The game needs more 2 door performance cars, especially muscle cars if you want to be more accurate regarding the American performance car market.

I have answered the questions from the "how to write a good suggestion" thread here:

    Is it somewhat realistic?
It's more realistic than the game currently is.
Does it fit with the spirit of PZ?
    100%
Would it make the game too easy?
    No.
Would it require rewriting the entire game (like changing the camera view, for instance)
    Definitely no.
Would it add enough to the gameplay that it would be worth taking the time to add?
    I think so.
Would it be found in Muldraugh, Kentucky common enough to be added?
    Yes.

Hi, sorry to disappoint you but this idea has been already suggested many times and devs don't want this mechanic in the game, a mod for this exists though

I would like a sandbox option for zombies to have a chance to inflict deep wounds and fractures on players, preferably with adjustable chance. Because it's cool & fun.

I don't like where guns are in Zomboid, even modded firearms. Hardcore Reloading (not handloading) is about the only mod that drifts close to what I wish firearms were. Otherwise mods that accomplish these things do not exist. There aren't any survival games that do these things either.
    If I had my way I would;
Increase their volume to being louder than what it ever was Require more user input to use; Racking the bolt always requires the player to press X. Doing a full reload always requires the player to press X to release the bolt after inserting a new magazine/topping off the internal magazine or tube.  Be more sensitive to character moodles while still being absolutely lethal at any aim skill. Low skills and bad moodles means your character will drop ammunition, they will fail to cycle the weapon by short stroking the bolt, which requires you to re attempt a cycle or reload which may fail yet again as per RNG. You will lose any ammunition from a failed reload, but not a short stroke. Being in motion greatly increases the chance of firearm failure. Characters cannot clear jams under high enough panic without high enough aim. Characters with low reloading CANNOT top off magazines while moving. Any degree of panic at any skill removes the ability to top off magazines while walking. (Not internally fed firearms such as the MSR and JS2000.  Its possible for a character to accidentally shoot themselves while drawing a handgun at low aim skill under high panic. This would never be an instant kill.  Guarantee one hit kills on zombies if criteria is met at level 0 aiming. Anybody can headshot a crawler or immobilized zombie if they are not panicked.  Merge aiming with reloading into a single firearms skill.
I think these changes would make firearms far more realistic and immersive, it would also make them a difficult to use liability if not used properly. These changes would also set Zomboid far, far apart and above all other survival/hardcore games that have guns as there are no games that do these things with firearms.

So First Aid kinda gets a bad rap as a "useless stat", especially if you play on default settings in regard to infection

So what might be nice is having smaller ailments that the character could be afflicted by in the right circumstances that give other uses for the first aid stat.

    - Sunburn: If out in the sun for a long time, there could be a chance you get sunburn on any exposed skin. Have treatment be some sort of skin ointment or something, and have sunblock be an item the character could apply to prevent it.

    - Poison Ivy: While walking through bushes, in addition to the chance of getting scratches, you could get afflicted with poison ivy. Basically same deal as sunburn, some sort of skin ointment/lotion to treat it

    - Seasonal Allergies: Perhaps have a negative trait that makes it so your character has hay fever during the spring and autumn months in exchange for a couple of points. Basically behaves similar to having a cold with sneezing and such, but less often, and perhaps have some sort of allergy medication you could take to counteract it.

    - Bug Bites: This could come in mulitple forms, like mosquito or chigger bites that just behave like poison ivy/sunburn, or perhaps you could have ticks or leeches who make you sick if you don't remove them with tweezers. You could also have some sort of bug spray to prevent bugs from biting in the first place.

    - Muscle fatigue: Playing off of the already existing exercise fatigue affliction, you could have this happen after particular strenuous activity in the field as well, like a particularly big fight as a melee fighter, or if you have to run a lot to escape. You could have some sort of Icy Hot style deal, which makes the fatigue pass more quickly, but in exchange the effects last significantly longer, so you might have to spend a day recovering from a big fight even if you never got touched.

    - Sprains: In situations where you trip and fall (going over a fence, sprinting through bushes, even getting knocked over by a fence lunging zombie) you could sprain a wrist or an ankle. You could use cold packs or even just frozen food from the freezer to ice the afflicted area.

A couple of other profession based minor afflictions if you wanted to be REALLY Evil

    - Have a chance of getting a splinter in your hand while doing Carpentry tasks without work gloves. Requires tweezers to remove

    - While doing metalworking, if you say, try to weld in like, shorts or a T shirt or some otherwise less protective clothing, have a chance of getting minor burns from the sparks on your exposed skin

    - Similarly, if you try doing mechanic work on a car without some sort of gloves on, especially if the car is or recently was running, get a chance to get minor burns on your hands

    - If you use a knife in a cooking task, AND have the clumbsy trait, have a chance to cut yourself. Could apply the same anti-synergy to Tailoring

Another thought I had in favor of having a generic throw command

When they add animals in Build 42, if they add dogs, you could throw twigs or tennis balls and play fetch

Have it reduce your stress, unhappyness, and boredom if the dog brings it back to you

duh7 reacted to knightshousegames in Throwing stones/equiping them as weapons or throwing skill
I have thought it would be cool if you could distract zombies with thrown objects, sorta like The Last of Us, where you could throw bricks or empty bottles to draw the attention of a group in a direction

As for thrown weapons, typically thrown weapons other than like the Pilum were mostly for the sake of opening or weakening an enemies defenses, not really for dealing fatal blows. Movies make ninja stars and throwing knives look super deadly, but once you've thrown one yourself, you realize "oh. These are pretty small, and not very heavy..." like it would be a challenge to kill someone with one even if you were holding it in your hand and trying to stab them with it. So as a viable weapon? not really. The only real hand thrown weapons that can get serious kills are grenades and Molotov Cocktails.

So being able to throw objects to direct Zombie attention would definitely be good. And the code is already there for throwing things thanks to pipe bombs and molotovs, so it might not even be hard to implement. But for actually dealing damage? not really.

I grew up extremely poor, and even I had a CD walkman by the time I was in middle school in the late 90s/early 2000s, and we usually got stuff a generation behind. I remember my friends all had cases and cases of CDs from all their favorite bands everywhere, dozens of them in their rooms. My older friend's car had a CD player when he was learning to drive so we had the little books with the sleeves full of CDs that we had to change between.

We had the tape walkman with the radio on it before that, which is something that probably should be in the game as more common by this point, I remember my older sister had a bunch of cassette tapes up in her room. Dunno why those aren't the main audio format for the game, with CDs being less common than cassettes in 1993.

As for movies, you watched them on VHS, they were as ubiquitous as Youtube or Netflix is now. My mom STILL has our massive collection of VHS tapes. I remember a friend brought his kid brother over who was baffled by the "weird book" of Toy Story 1 we had on the shelf, because he had just watched it on Blu Ray, and we had to explain to him that that movie came out when we were his age, and thats how we watched it.

I think the trouble with this is verticality, which doesn't really exist in Zomboid, at least in real terms

As far as I can tell, Zomboid is 3D models on 2D "pre rendered" backgrounds, akin to games from the late PS1 era like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy, so the backgrounds are actually totally flat and just rely on perspective illusions to give a sense of depth. This makes actual "climbing" a real challenge, which is why I am guessing it hasn't been implemented, especially with other 3D bodies like cars, which I feel like is already tricky enough to interact with

In terms of the strategic viability of the move? Probably not wise, mobility is your big advantage over the horde, so stranding yourself on a car roof is mostly strategically akin to trying to climb a tree to get away from a bear, or hiding in a closet, basically a tier above suicide. Even if they couldn't reach you at all, you are essentially allowing them to cut off any chance of escape on purpose. I think they use this imagery on the cover specifically to convey a sense of futility, given the game literally tells you "this is how you died" when you start it.

Now if you could climb on the roof of a car to use it to climb up onto things, like second story windows or fire escapes to get away from the horde, that would be a different story. But that again dives into the pre rendered nature of the environment vs the 3D nature of the character and cars and it makes me a little nauseous just thinking about how one might program that kind of parkour into a tile map

I've always thought it was weird that you just have this free random slot on your back that holds long weapons that just sorta...float there with no real reason, while hip slots require a belt

I know there are mods for things like slings and sheaths, but I feel like it would be better if those sorts of things were required for equipping things to yourself, not just optional

Like at the absolute very least, have the back slot require a backpack to be equipped, like the hip slots requiring a belt or a holster

And really, the way I might do it is have each slot like "Belt Left" and "Belt Right"  only be compatible with sheaths and holsters which then allow attachment of weapons, depending on the type

Like for knives, swords, machetes, etc, have sheaths, or for hafted weapons like axes and hammers and the like, you could have axe loops as well, like this

Then for the back, have an attach point on the backpack that can hold most weapons, but is a tiny bit slower, or for long guns have slings give you an additional back slot, or for long blades, back sheaths (though, honestly, back sheaths are so slow and cumbersome in real life you might as well just carry it on your belt....)

duh7 reacted to GG Cannon in Raising Horde - An important balancing factor
The most balanced setting I found, which also proved to be the most fun to me, was this:

To explain a bit why each value:
Population starts at the standard and in the course of 3 lunar months (28 days each) it raises to 4 times its initial value. So every 28 days it raises 1 integer (start at 1.0, 28th day is 2.0, 56th day is 3.0 and 84th day is 4.0)

For the respawn, 168 hours is exactly 7 days, for both respawn and respawn unseen so both cell and chunk respawn 25% of their population every week (100% every 28 days).
24 hours (1 day) for migration.

And finally, with the group sizes set to 5 with a radius of the group to 10, the concentration of zombies in a very compact manner is reduced, but since the group separation (distance between groups) is only 5, multiple groups may be in range of each other, forming "mega-groups".

This creates a situation that, in low population early on (1.0) you can find small groups of zombies spread apart easy enough that you can take care of them even alone, but as the population raises over the months up to the max (4.0) you will start to find mega-groups of dozens of zombies covering very wide areas.

They are spread enough that you can trim a bit, but can be close enough that you will call a massive horde in your direction, and alarms and shooting will call unthinkable hordes your way.

This gives the zombies a very organic distribution with not so hive-mind behavior yet still very prone to creating really massive hordes.

At 4.0 population, just being around a single street may already get you a pretty sizeable horde.

Okay so get this, the guy on the cover of Project Zomboid is a on car and yet we can't climb vehicles in the game?

I mean if we could climb up cars that would add some protection from the zombies. You know, in a "I have the high ground!" kind of sense.

The zombies would either not be able to climb up making you completely safe but surrounded; not able to climb up but able to pull you down if you're too close to the edge making it so you should go inwards on top of the car as much as possible; or they can climb up and maul you to death in addition to pulling you down.

If they can't climb up but you're surrounded it would give you the opportunity to pick them off with your gun or strike them dead downwards with a melee weapon. Same thing if they could pull you down which is a bit more challenging. It the most extreme case they can climb up or pull you down making it so you have to attack the most immediately threatening zombie. Like the one that gets up first, that's who you kill.

The most extreme case would force you to fight quickly and sequentially to at least endure a bit longer.

Might want to add some kind of move to knock off climbing zombies or swat away zombies trying to pull you down.

Personally I prefer it if they couldn't climb or grab you down. The balancing factor would still be that if you're out of gun(s) rounds you got to pull out your melee weapon. If your melee weapon(s) breaks then you could very well be screwed. Screwed because you'd essentially be stranded on your car which would eventually lead to your death due to hunger and dehydration not to mention you probably could sleep too well. I mean a horde of zombies growling at me inches away while I'm on a hard cold car roof ain't exactly a sleep number bed experience.

The car could also serve as a temporary barrier between you and the zombies. For example, they're chasing you, you quickly vault over a car (or climb it and jump off the other end) and now the zombies have to go around rather than just making a beeline for you. That could buy you some time which is always of the essence in the game in every conceivable way!

So yeah I want to be able to use a car roof to my advantage as well as be like the chad on the cover!
