What is the most valuable animal in a zombie apocalypse?

If I'm in a city, I'd consider animals very, very risky to have and keep. Besides the extra food and noise, you're also going to have to worry about feces disposal and catching fleas and parasites from it.

With the low population density of the countryside, I'd actually want animals that would alert you to intruders. Guineas make a ton of racket if they see strangers or predators, and also kill snakes and eat ticks. We've got chickens that live mixed in with them and lay signifcantly more eggs.

Fish are another great option, if you have access to a pond or lake. I

Cats would be pretty handy for their traditional role of killing vermin, but if they got hungry could put quite a dent in the local bird population. Including chickens, if particularly unlucky.

Horses for transportation, but they are often quite skittish. Had one get scared and run away with me on it after a fluttering plastic bag spooked him.

Guinea Pigs kill snakes?! Damn, my respect for the Guinea just shot up a notch.

But keeping snakes around might be a good thing, as they eat a lot of mice that might otherwise be cluttering up the grain silo.

And I'm just gonna say this one more time. Devs? I'd love it if you put in a Falconer skill. It might be rare, but if someone can find an egg of a hawk or a falcon of some kind, they could hatch it and raise it into a very valuable hunting asset.

Not pigs, fowl.

Ugly devils, taste a bit like turkey. Dumber than a sack of rocks, so usually people keep them together with chickens and put their eggs in the chicken's nests. The hen then raises the guinea biddies with her own, and does a significantly better job of keeping them alive than it's real parents ever could. If anything they don't recognize gets close, they raise the alarm and start cackling. Bad thing if you're in the city, but in a remote area it'd be a handy way of alerting you to the odd zombie or human intruder.

A good Dog never hurt anything!

Horses require a truly MASSIVE amount of energy and effort to care for them and they get scared by the slightest bit of provocation. If you tried to ride them through a zombie infested town, odds are good you'd be bucked to the ground and left for zombie chow in under a minute unless you're a rider with years of experience.

Cows are probably the worst animal you could have. They take up a large amount of grazing land. Land which is almost certainly unavailable for use. They takes years to grow to a respectable size and would almost assuredly be eaten before you get much milk out of them. If you want animals for meat, pigs would be better. They're omnivores and can be fed leftover dinner scraps as a supplement. Also it only takes them a few months to get to a good size, so they'd be ready to slaughter a lot sooner.

I'd say goats and chickens would be most useful. Chickens could be fed from your crops or left to roam around a small area to feed themselves on insects and the like to reduce the need to feed them somewhat. The meat and eggs would be greatly useful. Goats would be a better source of milk over cows as they don't require as much space, they're very resilient against disease, and they're very capable of taking care of themselves in the wild in case the zeds break down the fences and it's every man for themselves.

I agree with the Goats and Chickens but only maybe a gunshot would scare the horse. I don't think Zombies would try to eat the Horse they only want humans plus the fact a Horse couldn't really tell a Zombie and Human apart except maybe the smell.

A sheep and a dolphin...

Crossed-Wish-You-Were-Here-21-1024x1004.

Whoa whoa, ain't that picture from some sort of zombie-book where the people aren't undead but just plain crazy cannibals?

More like plain crazy torture-rape-murderers. The cannibalism is actually one of the more pleasant things they do on the side. But it's actually a decent comic series and not the cheap torture porn it appears to be on first glance.

And it's available for free on the interwebz: http://www.crossedcomic.com/

And Jackson's sheep WAS well-earned.

A trusty dog, quiet large and one that doesn't bark alot.

I'm no dog-expert on which type of dog that would be cause I'm a cat-person.

German Shepherd is a really good dog to have they are easy to train, agile, strong and very friendly !

Horses are some of the most easily scared animals man has kept. Camera flashes. Objects they're unfamiliar with. A gunshot would certainly do it, but the scent of death itself would drive a horse mad with fear if it got so much as within a hundred yards of a zed. Even something kind of shiny would cause a horse to panic and rear back, possibly knocking you off if you're not an experienced rider. Let me repeat that. They get scared by shiny things.

Trust me on this. A horse is NOT an animal you can keep easily in a zombie apocalypse. And most average people don't know how to ride a horse anyway. We'd get bucked to the ground and break a leg or an arm if we even tried.

I reckon the best animal for a zombie apocalypse would be a black sheep from the film "Black Sheep" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sheep_(2006_film) . I would let it bite the zombies, infect them and cause them to turn into sheep monsters, causing a zombie apocalypse for the zombies, although, I would need to figure out how to stop the sheep infecting me. Hmmmm. :/

either a trained dog or trained monkey or trained homing pigeon.

Trained Dog:

Can help guard your house.

Can even fend off attackers.

Can help tracking something.

Can help hunting small games in the wild.

Trained Monkey:

Can unlock a door through the inside. Just give him a lift through a window and he will do the trick.

Can help scavenging for food inside a house or building.

Can guard your house.

Can provide distraction safely since they can run fast and climb fast to safety.

Trained Bird/Homing Pigeon:

Can detect zombies, food sources, water sources and even other survivors in a huge radius, and trained how to tell their findings by different means.

I made a summary for my Black Sheep.

Black Sheep:

Infects zombies, turning them into sheep-zombies, which then bite other zombies, causing a zombie apocalypse for zombies.

Could provide you with meat and wool.

Would as Jethro said, serve as a sex-sheep, for when you get lonely in you safe house.

A bird??? Maybe an Eagle. or homing pigeon... Teach it to fly in one direction making as much noise as possible, flying low to ground, attracting zombies, then fly up and loop back to you.

You could effectively steer all the zombie herds around. Or if your trapped, you can send the bird out to lead them away from you.

Edit: Or we could just Avatar our way into the air with their flying unicorn things.

For me it would have to be a dog.
Staffodshire Bull Terrier, they are very like pit bulls, small but muscular strong , and can be vicious against enemies, doesn't eat THAT much, and you know what they say about dogs, they are a mans best friend, so its good to have one on your side while facing mans worst enemy.

I like the idea of a trained monkey because of the same reasons jhepong24 stated before.

They would also make lovely companions since they have very strong personalities (but I guess that could also be said for other more common pets).

  • 3 weeks later...

I know this is a bit "old", but I just wanted to comment on how hilarious the idea that you're going to train an eagle is... :)

Chickens would be great... eggs, meat when they're male, or no longer laying.  Easy to breed.  Toughest part would be to keep the rooster(s) quiet.  They would probably mostly be able to scavenge the landscape for food (they love bugs and seeds).  They're also pretty good "alarm" animals.

As long as you weren't in town they probably wouldn't be leading zeds back to your place either.
