Head Lamps

I usually never use the flash light, due to my favorite weapons requiring two hands.

Head Lamps could be common around Kentucky if there are mines around the area, or underground construction workers like for sewers or pipes.

And I'd imagine the player character could just jury rig a head lamp, or find a clip vest flashlight.

a modern headlamp with LED bulb can vary between 60-200 hours on a battery.

LEDs don't draw that much current so they should be fairly power efficient

(got the variable hours figure looking here http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/search.cmd?form_state=searchForm&N=0&fsch=true&Ntk=AllProducts&Ntt=head+lamps&x=10&y=6&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products)

So would they be any real downside?

yeah. the light would give the zombies and rival NPC's a very easy way to locate you

Another downside could be that, assuming they incorporate wearable headgear (hats and such), you might not be able to equip a headlamp and a hat at the same time. If headgear is then factored into how warm you are, headlamps theoretically become hazardous in the winter.

Support for headlamps, by the way.

actually, there are many hats that have lights built into the visor or even built into a Beanie

in truth, i would expect quite a few hunters in Kentucky would have at least one of these hats.

if not for hunting or fishing, then for sitting around the fire at night with a beer or two

Oh, for sure. My ex roommate was a snowboard instructor and avid hiker, I borrowed his hat/headlamp combo thingy for quite a few winter excursions. I was just trying to work out a downside to headlamps, since...realistically, there isn't much of one :P

During the time period I'd expect head lamps to be like a Miner Headlamp.

LED's may or may not be prevalent/Exist in this time period/universe.

A downside IMO should be you can't wear a fur cap, or a police riot armor set.

IMO if Riot armor is implemented it should make players impervious to everything but bites, and decrease the chance to be bitten by like 80%, but slow the player alot.

This ^ (Petzl Duo Belt)

Best head lamp ever fed by 4 fat batteries with enough light for over a week (producer says over 400hrs but I doubt it) on minimum beam. I've got one myself but mine's modded with stronger LEDs and better electronics. It's almost indestructible, most popular lamp in caving (spelunking) - there's also a variant fed by 4 AA batteries but that's more weight on your head as battery box is on the back of your head and has less life due to smaller batteries.
