The file order looks fine so have him try doing a Steam Library->Right click Project Zomboid->Properties->Local Files tab->Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

If it's a private server for only you and your friends you can set DoLuaChecksum=false in Zomboid/Server/servertest.ini and your friend will be able to play with you for sure.

Whittos got a reaction from Sanctus in Pillow Fights!
    Good evening ladies and gentlemen!

I was recently playing some Project Zomboid and due to my bizarre obsession with pillows began collecting and hoarding them at my riverside encampment. It was while I was doing this that I experienced a sudden moment of enlightenment. The idea of engaging in pillow fights with other survivors in PZ multiplayer. Now I realise not all of you share my truly peculiar passion for pillows, but allow me to elaborate on why I believe pillow fights should be implemented into Project Zomboid.

First and foremost, pillows currently have no use whatsoever in multiplayer for Project Zomboid. I believe that by giving a use to these currently purposeless pillows would greatly add to the aesthetic feel of the game. If you've bothered to read this far and still think I'm as mad as a hatter, please allow me to further explain myself.

Imagine you're holed up in an isolated establishment in the woods with your mates during the zombie apocalypse. Even with the company of your friends, it would still be easy to become bored most of the time, bing stuck with the perpetual routine of farming, fishing, trapping, foraging and collecting and boiling water from your water barrels. What better way is there to let off steam than by whacking your pals with a fluffy pillow? If you've never experienced a pillow fight, well... let's just say you're missing out on some awesome fun.

I hereby propose that pillow fights should be added to project zomboid as a means of decreasing boredom in multiplayer mode. Animations would be needed, so I understand this would not be a simple task. However, I truly do believe that pillow fights would contribute a great deal to the game as they would add something new, interesting and fun to the game.

Thanks for taking the time to read my suggestion. Please provide any feedback in the comments below.

    Yours truly,
    Whittos. xoxo

    Occupations:
In this selection I'll broadly cover all the Occupations and go into a bit more detail of the more unique ones.
Unemployed: After doing more testing this more, it isn't nearly as good as it could be. However, it's perfect if you have a specific build in mind that the current occupations don't fit.
Skill Occupations: While some jobs aren't entirely worth it, picking one that fits your skill focus in a god send. Otherwise leveling up core professions are a nightmare, even with books and/or fast learner.
"Unqiue" Occupations: These give you unique traits that are occupation only. Namely:
Security Guard: Night Owl - According to mutiple sources, this is currently broken and a waste.
Veteran: Desensitized - I feel like this could be hit or miss. Unless panic became much more of pain or you plan on using nothing but close ranged guns, panic won't be much of an issue.
Lumberjack: Cutting tree's faster isn't that great but axes are the best melee weapon in the game. Hitting things faster isn't as amazing as you'd think but its helpful. Otherwise not overly amazing.

    Positive Traits:
Adrenaline Junkie(-8): Holy cow, look at that cost. Not to mention its very situational. However, if you combine it with Panic traits and Athletic/Fit, you'll be running for days. Avoid, otherwise.
Athletic/Fit(-10/-6): These are awesome. First of all, faster running is straight up amazing for early AND late game. You'll be traveling long distances and carting back heavy loads. The fact that you can run longer helps, too. Myself and many others believe that the extra +2 fitness isn't worth the cost for Athletic, however the 6 points for the extra speed/length is.
Brave(-4): Panic wasn't much of an issue last year and It doesn't seem to be that big of an issue now, either. It might get in the way of gun play but if you're worried about panic, go with Vetran.
Cat's Eyes(-2): Personally? I'd avoid this. As far as I can tell it only increases the sight cone and not brightness. You can also increase brightness in video settings, so no big loss.
Dextrous(-2): Transfering items is a massive pain when you have a bag full of stuff you're trying to throw into a box. However, if you're in a safe location like your base, you can simply speed up the clock. Useful but definately not "Priority"
Eagle Eyed(-6): As far as I can tell this only increases sight distance and not cone size. Sort of useless as you can "view" further out with ctrl, anyway.
Fast Healer(-6): I feel like this trait could be great or terrible as first aid is a massive pain in the butt and lets face it, you're going to get hurt no matter how careful you are. However, unless you're very prone to damage or aren't very good, chances are this isn't going to be used much. However, may be more useful late game when medical supplies are scarce. Also keep in mind that you can get "very well fed" for a large healing boost as well, provided you have plenty of food. If you're playing MP, though. You might want to consider taking this skill as you can't speed up time.
Fast Learner(-6): I feel like this has the potential to be a "core" ability. This would make leveling non-book skills much easier. I see no real downside to this trait, even the cost. Howver, the extra 30% isn't noticed very well unless you already have other skill boosters.
Fast Reader(-2): For 2 points this isn't terrible, however you'll have -tons- of free time on your hands once you hit mid-game and are fairly established. Not really worth picking up unless you have 2 points laying around and nothing else looks appealing.
Graceful/Inconspicuous(-4): I've lumped these together as they go hand in hand. If you plan on sneaking around? Perfect for you! However, I find "Sneaking" is very dangerous in most cases and is largely easier to deal with the threat.
Iron Gut(-3): Don't eat raw/rotten foods and save 3 points.
Keen Hearing(-6): Do you want to hear a zombie banging on a window 3 blocks down? Even if you did, the cost is a bit high for what it gives. However it should increase your "Vision Bubble" and help you "detect" threats that may be coming up around you. If you aren't normally aware of your surrounds, it could help.
Light Eater(-4): A tad high for what it does and doesn't effect you at all early game. Even late game, food shouldn't be too much of an issue, provided you only eat when hungry.
Low Thirst(-4): Early game? Fill up empty/condiment bottles, pots, bowls, etc. With water from the tap and store them somewhere safe. Should be perfectly fine while saving 4 points.
Lucky(-4): The wiki says it doesn't effect infection chances but from what I hear, it does make you less likely to get bit/scratched, which is amazing if it does. Even if it doesn't? Increased rare loot is AMAZING, I'd pay 6 points just for that alone. Suck it up because this is basically a core ability. Ontop of that, it also increases your repair chances.
Organised(-6): Normal container space is 40, this bumps it up to 65! Kind of nice, if you want to put a lot of things in one place. However, not very useful late game when you can build as many containers as you like. Also pricey.
Outdoorsman(-2): Core ability. There is only 3 things that can make you sick now, bites, infect wounds, and rotten food. For 2 points, this ads TONS of survival. This was also the main reason park ranger was one of the best occupations.
Resilient(-4): There aren't a lot of things that are going to make you sick, even less if you avoid bad food/water and take outdoorsman. However, this skill apparently reduces the risk of a scratch causing a zombie infection. Not to mention it reduces the chances of regular infections. Its not core by any means but it could save your butt.
Strong/Stout(-10/-6): Strength isn't very well explained but chances are you hit harder with melee weapons and higher carry capacity. Unless its changed, you can still carry up to 50lb total, but this will allow you to carry more before being slowed down. The extra push back is nice if you're melee but isn't nessicary. Unlike Athletic/Fit, Strong is the much better choice, as the extra 2 damage is what matters most. Also more carry is always so nice.
Thick Skinned(-6): Yes, Shut up. This will save your ass so many times. Less chance of bite, lower damage IF damaged, harder to be wounded. Its basically Core.
Wakeful(-2): Eh, not so great. You'll want to spend your nights sleeping, all this will do is give you more book time.

    Hobby Traits:
Angler, Baseball Player, Brawler, First Aider, Former Scout, Gardener, Gymnast, Handy, Hiker, Hunter, Runner, Self Defense Class.

All of these skills give a +1 in one or more skills, as well as an aparent bonus to EXP when leveling them, naturally. However, given that you have plenty of time to level them. I don't feel like many of these are even worth taking, minus few expections. (I.E. a specific skill build)

While none of these are core, having atleast one in your primary skills works wonders while leaving them up. Otherwise, avoid any you can't spare.

    Negitive Traits:
Agoraphobic/Claustrophobic(+4): Panic is -rarely- an issue unless you're using guns and even the, not so much. They're a tad annoying hearing the "panic" heartbeat sounds while doing nothing dangerous, but otherwise no big deal. Claustrophobic is going to effect you least when you're out doors and none at all if you have an outdoors base. Feel free to take both for +8. However, While Panic doesn't really hurt anything, it is damned annoying..
All Thumbs(+2): Only 2 points for something fairly annoying throughout the entire game. I'd say avoid but if you need +2 points its not so bad. However, as mentioned with dexterous. You have all the time in the world while in your base.
Asthmatic(+5): This one is iffy for me. It can be taken with Fit/athletic but it only makes you lose endurance faster. I'd say avoid as the main reason for taking fit is the ability to run longer without getting exhaustion. Take last if needed.
Clumsy/Conspicuous(+2): Unless you're intentionally going for sneaky, this is actually a boon. As the easiest way to clear out large amounts of zombies is to round them up and set them on fire. These help with that.
Cowardly(+2): Simular points as the phobia's. Panic is going to happen, its unavoidable. However, panic can always be annoying.
Deaf(+12): Holy crap have we hit the holy grail of negitive traits. Like seriously, holy crap. Ok first, let me explain why its bad. You won't hear zombies, at all. If one's behind you? Oh well. However, if you're careful and keep an eye out like you should ALWAYS do, then it does nothing. The only other bad thing is that you can't hear alarms or other noises that attract zombies. Besides from that? Straight up amazing for what you give up. Infact, I like it as I hate hearing the constant zomboid noises.
Note: Keep in mind, this is my opinion on the ability and many disagree. However you get a ton of points for something that barely efffects you, provided you're aware of your surroundings and careful.
Disorganised(+4): You only give up a wopping 5lb of inventory space, which isn't that big of a deal. However it is incredibly annoying, even late game, when you have the ability to make as many containers as you like. If you need 4 points, go ahead.
Feeble/Weak(+6/+10): I say no, even if you don't want Strong/Stout, you shouldn't take something that negitivly effects your melee/carry cap. If you want to focus on guns, this isn't terrible. However, its going to be a massive pain in the ass throughout the game. However, if you have a specific, non combat role in MP, its not that bad.
Hard of Hearing(+2): Basically?, free 2 points! It also reduces the radius of zombie noises while still allowing you to hear loud, important noises. Can not be taken with Deaf.
Hearty Appetite/High Thirst(+4/+6): Originally I disliked this but food and water should be readily available, even late game. Provided you're good at rationing and stock piling, it should never be an issue. However, High Thirst can be difficult to deal with if water goes out before you can stockpile some.
Hemophobic(+3): Who seriously cares about panic and if you're on single player, the other part doesn't matter at all.
Hypochondriac(+2): This is a massive pain in the ass to deal with and for only 2 points at that! Avoid.
Illiterate(+8): Please tell me you weren't seriously considering this one. Not being able to read skill books makes leveling those skills just as painful as the others. Avoid.
Obese/Overweight(+10/+6): Nope, same reasons as Feeble/Weak but more so. Avoid.
Pacifist(+4): What are you, a hippie? Pass! On MP, this isn't so bad if you have a non-combat role.
Prone to Illness(+4): With Outdoorsman, this is basically 2 free points. However, potentially makes wounds more infectious. Also potentially increases your chance of a scratch causing zombinisim. I personally never had a problem with it but I may be lucky.
Restless Sleeper(+6): According to multiple sources, it also effects exhaustion, meaning you need more rest to get rid of it. Extremely bad if so. Avoid.
Short Sighter(+2): Apprently, this doesn't reduce your sight cone, only range. Which is easily overcome by using Ctrl to "scroll" out.
Sleepyhead(+4): Apprently, this isn't bad at all. Simply makes you tired more often, which can be great if you need to sleep for whatever reason. Just make sure not to oversleep too much.
Slow Healer(+6): Even without this, healing is a massive pain in the butt, if you're unlucky enough to get hurt. Healing is a massive pain in the ass, even with fast healing. I'd say avoid unless you really need 6 points.
Slow Learner(+6): Avoid at all costs. I mean it. Leveling skills is slow enough.
Slow Reader(+2): Its honestly not that bad, as you'll have plenty of time to read all the books, ever. Many people agree that its basically "free" points.
Thin-skinned(+6): Do I even need to explain why this is bad? Avoid it.
Unlucky(+4): See lucky but oppisite. This is TERRIBLE trait to have, even for 8+ points.
Weak Stomach(+3): Unless I'm mistaken. The only way to get food based illness is to eat raw or rotten food. Fairly easy to avoid for basically 3 free points.

    Conclusion:
These are all based on my educated opinion from ingame experience. If you'd like to correct any mistakes I've made or make points I may not of seen, feel free to post below and I'll consider and/or correct this post.

Occupation:Traits are your bread at butter so try to save some points for that. However, occupations are the only way to raise your fitness/strength besides traits. Also, the "skill" occuptations aren't terrible if you plan on focusing on some specific skills that have no books.

Park Ranger: Forage/trapping is great, plus a minor bonus to carp isn't bad.
Lumber Jack: Axeman itself isn't worth it but the bonuses it gives makes you a literal axe murderer. No utility skills, though. Combined with Handy isn't bad, either.
Carpenter: If you plan on doing a lot of building, it isn't bad by any means. You already start fairly high and leveling it is a breeze. A bit -too- focused but not bad by any means. Handy exp boost doesn't stack.

Traits: What's ideal for me and what's ideal for you are likely very different, however if my opinions above aren't specific enough, here's a few of my favorites to take.
Pro: Fit, Fast Learner, Luckly, Outdoorsman, Strong, Thicked Skin
Con: Claustrophobic, Clumsy/Conspicuous, Cowardly, Deaf, Disorganized, Hard of Hearing, Hearty Eater/High Thirst, Hemophobic, Short Sighted, Sleepyhead, Slow Reader, Weak Stomach
    Honorable Mentions:
Adrenaline Junkie, Dextrous, Fast Healer, Graceful/Inconspicuous, Organised, Resilient, Skill focused Traits
Agoraphobic, All Thumbs, Asthmatic, Prone to Illness
    Self-Defense Class, Runner

    Personal Build:
    Lumberjack: +Axeman
(+52) Claustrophobic, Clumsy/Conspicuous, Cowardly, Deaf, Disorganized, Hearty Appetite/High Thirst, Hemophobic, Short Sighter, Sleepyhead, Slow Reader, Weak Stomach
(-52) Dextrous, Fast Learner, Fit, Lucky, Outdoorsman, Resilient, Strong, Thicked Skin
Gardener, Handy (Carp/Farming would be primary skills as I plan on doing lots of construction and farming would be my only food source)

Hey, strange problem that no one else seems to have except maybe Linux users.(?)

I have a MacBook Pro late 2013, OS X 10.10.2, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M, Intel Iris Pro (switchable).  And no matter what settings I've tried tweaking, turning things on and off restarting deleting .ini 's, running on battery or no battery etc., my characters and zombies do not have faces textures or feet textures.  Now I know I can simply turn off 3D models, but damned if I just don't love me some 3D models!  You feel me right?  Right.  Because I'm 3D.

Thanks for any help or information.

For what it's worth, server hosting works fine for Linux, OS X, and Windows equally well. I've even written a script for the OS X version that makes it easier to launch than a windows server; even if you don't have it, though, it's still as simple as following the instructions.

Unfortunately, netcode is hard. Making a magical "host server" button just isn't very feasible in the short term. There are simply too many things that have to be configured manually. Sure, there are some games that can work it out, but they generally have more than 4 coders on staff (like we do, roughly) and have people who actually just do netcode.

Further, I think it's a bit off to say that it's been "neglected for far too long" as it's only just been added in the last couple months; it's not like it's been in since the start of the game development, and it's being improved constantly if you read our patch notes.

The lag either comes from the server being short memory or internet bandwidth or you being short one of the two. Unfortunately, again, there's not a whole lot we can do about that. Try to find a server hosted near your physical location in the world.

However, you have hit on one truth with your post, and that's that multiplayer is not the focus of Project Zomboid. Since the first day the devs have made it clear that the focus of PZ is and always will be singleplayer. Multiplayer is something secondary and not the primary focus of the game at all. It's there, and they're going to support it, but the majority of resources shall always go to improving the gameplay of the game and the experience.

We do appreciate your feedback- if you'd like a copy of the OS X server script I wrote I'd be happy to get it to you, just reply in thread or shoot me a PM. I hope my explanation helps you understand the situation a bit better, and know that we definitely take your feedback into account.

7-25-2014- NOTICE: this server will be whitelisted once released. If you're interested, you can reserve a spot by sending me a private message with an username and password. I'll be posting any usernames I get on here so people know what's already taken. The guideline for picking your username is very simple: only full first and last names (e.g. Jason Booney, doesn't have to be your real name ofc), nicknames (e.g. lil J), or roleplay based professions (i.e. Lone Survivor/ Farmer). No numbers or symbols (e.g. punctuation, underscore, slash...etc.).

    Information About The Town

    Name
The name of the town will be voted on as soon as we get the server set up

    Politics

Not only do we have to deal with the thousands of undead relentlessly smashing down our walls or the hordes of bandits who have there eyes set on stealing what is ours but we also have to deal with each other and doing what is in the best interests of the community.

The Government will be a Republic with a self-elected leader (Me for the time being), however after the leader serves his term an election will occur and the people will vote for a leader who is in the best interest of the settlement.

    The Council

The Council speak for the people, for every 5 members of the town one council member will be selected, the council will vote on every major event that is affecting the settlement, however anything that the council passes will have to be signed by the Mayor/President.

Every council member will serve roughly 2 weeks (Real Life) before elections begin and a new council is created.

    Voting
No major action will occur without it being passed off by the council and the Mayor/President.

Every major act will have to be voted on whether it is building farms or increasing the Local Security/Armed Forces.

Everyone that is a member of the town will have a vote whether they are a member of the council or a civilian of the settlement.

Council member votes are worth 5 votes
    While civilians are worth 1

    Jobs

Everyone is expected to pull there weight around the settlement whether they are a member of the council or a newly joined survivor, if a member of the civilian does not pull there weigh they will be punished (Check Penalty System Below)

    Security Member
The Towns Security Team is in charge of the safety and survival of the entire town, they will mainly be on guard duty walking the parameter and occasionally eliminating/routing large nearby hordes. They will very rarely go on missions that involve leaving the general area of the settlement.

    Armed Forces
Veteran Members of the Towns Security Team will form the [insert Towns Name Here] Armed Forces, they are expected to be made within the first 2 (Real Life) weeks of the towns existence. They will commonly destroy infected hordes and eliminate hostile raider groups.

    Scavenger
The main backbone of the town, Scavengers are in charge of supplying the town with not only food and water but also medication and weaponry, without scavengers the town will surely die due to lack of supplies.

    Farmer/Doctor
In charge of tending crops as well as patching up wounded town members, they are rarely sent outside alone and when they are they tend to have heavy escort.

    Carpenter
Possibly the most demanding job in the entire town they are responsible for keeping the towns infrastructure top notch.

    Part Time Jobs

Jobs that members of the town conduct as well as there main jobs

Executioner/Sheriff (Must be member of the Armed Forces Or Security)

Responsible of Executing or watching prisoners

    Militia
All members of the settlement will be expected to conduct atleast 4 hours of security duty every week to ensure the protection of the settlement,

    Infrastructure

The town will be 100% player-made
The town itself is expected to be about the size of the the West Point Highschool if not slightly bigger
It will have a large perimeter wall that will surround the entire town
There will be roughly 10-25 buildings inside the town
For anyone wondering yes we will have a town hall late game
We will also have a prison where we will lock corrupt members of the town up

    Resources
Without resources the town is nothing, maintaining a very steady supply of resources is key to keeping the town operational, every single day someone will look over all of the towns supplies and determine what we need more of.

The town will have two main stockpiles of supplies one in the warehouse which every member of the town will be able to take from with proper permission and an undisclosed stockpile for emergency supplies.

    Rations
Every member of the town will receive daily rations of food and water and other supplies that are needed for there jobs, every job will receive the same amount of food daily to ensure that no one is more important than the other.

    Extra Rations
Members of the Security Team or Armed Forces will be daily rations of ammunition which will usually contain 15-20 rounds per day.

    Relations

The town will be kind and accepting to all survivors and even raiders as long as they do not pose a threat to the town. As long as everyone checks out at the gate they will be allowed inside to trade.

The town is not afraid to kill other survivors and raiders if they are caught stealing or harassing or hurting other members.

    Penalty System
We will not allow disorder inside of the town, and any civilian caught breaking laws will be punished.

    Stealing

    Events
Yes, events! This is probably the most dynamic thing, there will be a wide assortment of events here are some examples of the many events that this server will present.

Dropped Supply Bag: An resource bag has been dropped by a survivor that was traveling through the city. This bag can contain ammo, guns, food and medical supplies.
Air Drops: Crates dropped with supplies on the map at certain times. A horde is likely to be on or nearby the location. Location will be detailed by the admin (as I have no way to send it over a server-message).
Hordes: Hordes will routinely become a problem for survivors, but this also means more XP options and fun for those who like a bit of challenge.
Supply Area Overrun: An house filled with supplies will be overrun and it will be the players choice to clear it and get the supplies or ignore it.

    Build 25

Originally, I wanted to build my safehouse on the lake but the game wouldn't let me. Besides, the water tiles are very ugly. (No offense to the devs)

I built my safehouse on top of Giga Mart. The highest point is 6 stories off the ground... I think.

I'm safe from all zombies and I'm self-sustaining.

    Summary of my stockpile:

    70 Anti-Depressants 50 Beta Blockers 69 Painkillers 55 Sleeping Tablets 114 Bandages 103 Bandaids 60 Vitamins 68 Bags of chips 32 Orange Sodas 79 9mm Rounds 10 Boxes of 9mm Rounds 18 Boxes of Shotgun Shells 3 Pistols 3 Shotguns 3 Axes

If you'd like to join this server send me a message and I will grant you the IP, if you'd like to invite somebody else please notify me and do not post the IP on the forums. Preferably (but not limited to) Oceanic players.

Server up time: Server will be up between 9am - Midnight NZ time and some nights I'll leave it on overnight, sorry that it's not dedicated but it's a bit hard running it 24/7 from home, once I can find a dedicated host I will use that instead, for now this is simply a placeholder for Oceania players to enjoy the game without lagging on US/Euro servers. I will update the server status manually when it goes up or down so check here often if you're interested.

Game type: Server is PVE until further notice, at this point it is far too hard to moderate the server for menacing players so it is easier to just turn PVP off.

Known errors: Players joining and seeing nothing but a black screen, this was fixed for these people by restarting the game in compatibility mode.

    * You can also contact me via Steam directly if you really want the IP but can't seem to get hold of me on these forums! My Steam id is the same as my username on these forums.

Server status: OFFLINE (ignore this post, i doubt i will put a server back up)
    *server status updated manually
Requirements: Hamachi & A good attitude

    Hi there, first time poster.

Haven't been playing for long (but loving the direction these guys are going).

Record: 30 days and a handful of hours.

Second playthrough, default zombie and character options. Moved into a nice flat in the suburbs with a pretty picket fence. Quiet neighbors, nice neighborhood. Not much loot though.

Heading further and further afield, only managed to acquire a hammer and an axe as far as important tools goes.

Day 29, jimmying open the window to a shed hoping to find the mythical saw or trowel. Bitten while jimmying. Jimmies rustled.

The kicker? The zed was inside the shed on the floor and bit me through the wall.

Got back to the safehouse, grabbed all the ammo I had and a couple jugs of bleach, and headed for the center of town...

Old Dog, New Tricks Part III

The streets are pretty quiet tonight; I’ve only seen a few small groups of Zombies stumble their way past my new safe-house. What fucking day is it anyway – Thursday, Friday? Shit, maybe it’s Happy Hour at the “Un-Dead Bar and Grill” downtown or something, I’m just happy it’s looking like an uneventful evening.

Considering those God-damn nightmares out there seem much more active at night, I’m glad I’ve always been a bit of a night Owl. It's not exactly easy to relax when you can hear those fuckers shuffling around outside, wondering if you make-shift barricade will hold if they discover where you’re holed up. I can happily get by with four or five hours of sleep at night – or during the day for that matter. I worked as a Security Guard before…well, before the World turned to shit, and quite enjoyed the solitude and peace of my nightly rounds, and the shift work never bothered me.

I always was a bit of a loner I guess - not in a “black clothing, white makeup wearing, dissect some road-kill” kinda way, but I never had any problems spending time by myself. Don’t get me wrong, I do like people, hell, I had family and friends too…had…I um…I don’t think I’m quite ready to talk about that yet, maybe another time.

‘Course, the problem with people is that they’re, well, human, and that means they come with human traits and emotions – both good, and bad. I mentioned that it’d be a bitch to have survived this long only to make some tiny fuck-up that takes you out of the game, but maybe even worse than getting killed or injured through some stupid fuck-up of your own making, is when it’s someone else’s fuck-up that brings a Zombie horde knocking at your door. (Well, scratching and clawing at your door anyway). The un-dead fuckers populating this county ain’t the smartest of creatures, (the simple mechanics of opening a door seems a little beyond their comprehension), but that’s not to say they’re not dangerous – what they lack in limited cognitive skills they more than make up for in pure predatory instinct, and sheer numbers.

Anyway, as I was saying, it’s not just my own shit I have to watch out for, I also have to worry about what some of those other dumb-as-fuck survivors decide to do. I was sitting in my safe-house the other night, just dozing off as the booze and meds worked their magic, when some fucker comes bursting through the door, goes screaming by me and makes his way toward the back door. I near shit myself as I fumbled for the baseball bat beside me on the couch.

“Hey! What the fuck?” I’d yelled, my heart thumping so hard it felt like it was gonna punch right through my chest. No answer, he just kept running, flung open the back door and disappeared into the darkness.

So now I’m just standing there, wide-eyed, breathing fast, and it was only then I realised the front door was still wide open, and whoever this prick was, he’d been running, fast, and it wasn’t hard to guess from what. As I turned to the door, time seemed to slow down to a crawl. I could hear the blood rushing in my ears, and saw the first of at least a half a dozen Zombies shuffling through the doorway.

“Oh for fucks-sake” I mumbled, before tightening my grip on the bat, and I swung hard at the first Zombie as he – it, lurched toward me , stringy pieces of some poor fuckers’ flesh visible beneath its dirty, bloodied nails. The bat connected flush with the side of the Zeds face, I heard the crunching sound as what was left of its cheek bone and jaw collapsed and splintered, several teeth clattering to the floor. The Zombie took another step, collapsed to the side, only to make way for the next monstrosity aiming to rip me to pieces. This ones’ skin on the bottom half of its face was hanging in shreds, exposing a full set of teeth, making it look like it was fucking grinning at me. I kicked the open door as hard as I could, and was rewarded with a satisfying thump as it slammed shut, giving me some precious seconds to escape. I turned and ran, bolting out the back door where my unexpected visitor had left. I wasn’t thinking of all the tools and supplies I’d managed to scavenge, or my journal, I was just thinking I needed to get the fuck away…fast.

I’m not embarrassed to say I sprinted down that street in a fucking blind panic, trying to put as much distance between me and the Zombie horde as I could. I haven’t been back to the safe-house since then. I need to resupply first, and I’m setup okay in my new abode for a day or so, but I plan to get back to my original safe-house and maybe clear the area, or at least see if I can get some of my stuff back. It really pisses me off to think of all those hard-earned supplies I had to leave behind, all because of some wanker not knowing how to close a fucking door. I’ve decided I’m going to move around a bit more, have a few safe-houses scattered around. It’ll make supply runs a bit easier – especially on those occasions when I’m running later than expected, and darkness is closing in.

This time, I’ve taken the effort to barricade all doors before I head out or go to sleep – what’s a few extra minutes removing the boards when I leave or wake up, compared to having some asshole start a fucking Zombie house-party where I’m sleeping?

Dawn’s just breaking. I suppose a month or so ago I’d probably have thought it was a beautiful sunrise. Now I just tick off another night where I haven’t become some rotting, flesh-eating cadavers’ next meal. It’s even quieter now, not a shuffling Zombie in sight, and no sign of life. Might catch a few hours before heading out. Just need to check those doors first…

Old Dog, New Tricks Part II

Jesus, my hands are still fucking shaking – that was too damn close! My arm hurts like a bitch, but I think it’ll heal up okay. I’ve popped a few painkillers, (washed down with a shot of Whiskey for good measure), so I’m starting to feel a shit-load better – could’ve been fucking worse, that’s for sure!

You know that old saying about an old dog and new tricks? Well, that shit’s just wrong – (although to be fair, whoever said it probably wasn’t thinking of a “Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse” old dog.)

I’ve learnt a few new tricks and tips over the last couple of weeks as it happens – like why getting drunk while on a scavenging run is a bad fucking idea. (I know, it sounds kind of obvious, but it’d been a rough couple of days, and, hell, it seemed like a good idea at the time). Trying to out-run a group of hungry Zombies when you can barely stagger in a straight line and you’re seeing double is something I can definitely not recommend.

On the up side, the empty Whiskey bottle came in handy for another new skill I can now add to my resume; it was the perfect size for making a Molotov cocktail with. (I realise it doesn’t take a fucking rocket-scientist to understand the concept of making a Molotov, but it was still kinda cool to fashion one myself, and successfully use it. )

I’m using the term “successful” very fucking loosely – next time I won’t be sticking the rag into the bottle until I’m close to actually using it. It’s also a bitch of a weapon to carry round in that state – I managed to stuff it into my jacket pocket, but also splashed a decent amount of petrol over myself in the process. In my defence I did assemble it in a hurry, in semi-darkness, and while I was fair shitting myself. (I was on a supply run, and was just about to leave the apartment I’d been searching, when I noticed that half a dozen Zombies had decided to have a fucking Book Club meeting or something just across the street from me.)

At least I had my trusty bat with me, and if it’d been one or two Zeds, I probably would’ve just taken care of them, or at least tried running past them, but Six or more? Different fucking story, and they were blocking my escape route. That’s when I’d noticed the gas can, remembered I still had the empty Whiskey bottle from my earlier “Hundred-yard Stagger from the Un-dead” fiasco, and quickly assembled my new weapon.

So there I was, readying myself. I sucked in a few deep breaths, grabbed the Molotov from my pocket, and inched open the door. I could see the Zeds milling around the front of the alley I needed to go through on my route home. I flipped back the lid on my Zippo, ran my thumb across the wheel and held it close to the end of the rag. In a couple of seconds, it was ablaze, unfortunately so was one sleeve of my jacket. There I was, holding a lit Molotov in my left hand, staring stupidly at my right arm in flames, and now I also had the attention of the Zeds across the street. I may as well have had a fucking Neon buzzing above me, “Zombie Special of the Day – Flame Grilled Dumb-Ass Survivor”

I’m fucked if I know how, but I managed to struggle out of my burning jacket before I turned into a Roman-fucking candle, juggled the Molotov, (and nearly dropped it), tossed it toward the group of advancing Zeds, and beat the flames out on my arm as I dashed around their flaming, flailing reach. I thought the normal rotting, decaying stench that emanated from the Zeds was bad – try adding burning rotting flesh to that.

So, this old dog has learnt a couple of new tricks; how to make a Molotov cocktail, and also how not to use one, all in the same day. Things could’ve turned out much worse of course, and it’s a timely reminder that a simple fuck up could be the cause of my own demise. That’s just one of the challenges, (aside from the flesh-eating un-dead wandering the streets), that I face every day. I think some of the biggest dangers are actually self-induced: boredom, carelessness, impatience, emotions to name a few. Then there’s the physical dangers: injury, sickness, accidents, (could’ve broken my stupid fucking neck one supply run, got too cocky jumping down a flight of stairs and miss-judged the landing, I was a bit bloody and bruised for a few days. I take stairs a lot more carefully now).

I mentioned early on that I wanted a good death if…when…it comes. I’d hate to have survived all this - shit, just to make a stupid fuck-up like forgetting to shut a door or window, or setting myself on fire. The problem is it’s a bit of a vicious circle - you need to be alert, aware, all the time; it only takes a small screw up, but keeping up that level of attention is fucking exhausting.

Speaking of exhaustion, I’m pretty knackered. The pain in my arm’s faded to a dull ache, so I think I’m gonna sign-off and get some sleep, I got a feeling I’m going to need all the energy I can get to survive for much longer in this fucked-up City. ..
