  1. I like all the changes made on the farming, and I would even take them further... once we get a system for food preservation that is not based on finite resource (Edit: And "official" irrigation please :)).

There are things that don't need much work actually. If you build a dark box for your potatos that keeps them in and dry environment (but ventilated) they last easily 6+ months (up to almost the full year... and I know because I've eaten them :) Not the best potatos ever, but hell, you get to eat). You will have to cut their little "sons", but that's all the pain. For meat and fish, the easiest way is smoke it. I don't know what can be done for other vegetables but surely there are ways to extend their life in a feasible way within the game scenario.

And changing the subject a bit... Crossed myself with this structure a few weeks back (select level 1 in map layout to see it better):

It would be awesome if these kind of buildings allowed you to increase your winter harvest :)

In reality greenhouses do work during winter, but you need to heat them (and maybe add some lights in certain climates) to grow vegetables. I don't see how this would work without gas?

  2. Hmm this is all some really great information guys! 1000 appreciations are yours. However, because I have the IQ of a dead baby elephant, what's the step by step for canning food?

Seconded, I hope you can make vinegar in the future seeing as humans have been preserving food for milennia. I haven't played build 30, but I hope that drying meats shacks will be introduced for meats and vegetables for example. There are mods for this, but i prefer an official solution in the game.

  3.

Seems like a good choice! No trees nearby though, but would prove useful when build 30 rolls by.

My safehouse at Twiggy's, a bit boring though and quite far from the residential area. I chopped down 3/4 of the trees nearby for it

That is an absolutely rad design :')

    nice.

I myself cannot quiet warm up to west point though.

exactly the same reason: building material is hard to come by.

main reason I set up shop in my current save right here:

    http://pzmap.crash-override.net/#0.4002586865680275,0.23077465015835555,237.37631379976963

its got not too many entrances to barricade in the lower floor and plenty of trees right next to it for further building.

next on my agenda now is getting the precious and much needed books,

which is much easier in west point though because enigma is close by.

the hardware store IS a nice location

Thx (fedora) , It is about the optimal size. I like accesibility so sheet ropes, stairs and walkways. I like building so trees are a must have for me

@ psykikk: I actually prefer WP, when you loot the business area you are set to build your fortress, less running around needed and yeah books :). Safe houses always have walls for me, so windows are not really a problem.

    Fortress in Muldraugh: http://pzmap.crash-override.net/#0.43721855124945175,0.20412110462197625,212.88960000000006

Is a good location for me because the Big Warehouse and McCoy are nearby for almost everything vital (and sledgehammer for destroying crates). Houses not too far for scavenging. I also built a giant skybridge to the southern tip of Muldraugh for easy looting (actuallya vanity project).

  4. Copy that and paste in your recipes.txt file. Is in your media/scripts folder.

But that would kinda be useless, the point of the game is to survive with what you find, and make do with what you have. If you mod the game to be easy, you turn it into a construction game.

Next step would be to mod some auto-targeting defense turrets to kill the zeds for you. And an auto-looter, to stop clicking every dead body. :P

Thanks for the recipe! Yeah well, for dowels you need lvl 4 carpentry and it's labour intensive so still somewhat of a challenge. I just up the zombie count to compensate for mods (I only use food cannery and dowels).

  5. Here is my work-in-progress base. So far is the cheapest (nail-wise), largest and the most effective I've built.

Those floors are not made from wood, just by "spill sand" over an empty tile. There are 3 pieces of wall that are not really needed (near the bed/bookcase), but I've built them before I could find the barbed wire. Right now I'm searching for more nails, I need 10-20 pieces for placing a roof on top of certain crops... and I'm very angry because I've used 9 nails for those unneeded walls :) Also I need to make longer trips to bring sand home... and is hard with only 2 bags.

Anyway if a horde hits me, they are taken out with shotgun as they walk on what I like to call "the shooting range".

Later edit. I have NO idea where you guys find the all the nails you need to build such structures. After I raid the trail park and the warehouses I usually have under 100 nails. The bases shown in previous pictures probably costed more than 1000 nails each...

Cool safehouse, very nail efficient (tophat) . I got about 2500 nails (or more, not sure) from raiding only the big warehouse and McCoy Logging. Remember: after you empty it out, destroy all the crates with a sledgehammer, it will take a while buy you'll get the same amount of nails from unreachable crates. You could actually make your safehouse invincible by removing the stairs and putting up a sheet rope. This would make for a boring game though.

BTW: use the wooden dowel mod (it's somewhat outdated though and you can't build everything with it). logs --> 3 planks --> screwdriver + saw --> 9 wooden dowels.

    Twiggys

    Pros:

    • close to the most important buildings in West Point
    • close to the mall (relatively speaking, still quite far)
    • little to no action (can be a downside)
    • relatively close to fishing spot
    • lots of storing space
    • lots of trees close by

    Cons:

    • no innate defenses
    • no real bed (no problem atm)
    • far from residential area
    • shortage of nails (I use wooden dowel mod)

    What do you think?

  7. - snip -

    Looking good!

    This is mine from WP:

    xSaZuuP.jpg

(Under Constrution) The skybridge goes to my fishing spot north.

    Muldraugh:

    h7CWfQ4.jpg

The sky bridge goes from my safehouse to the southern point of Muldraugh (took me a LONG time to make). The other bridge I was planning to make to WP, but gave up and started a new save.

  8. @plekpot: The erosion-mod forces you to create a new save to get the effects (otherwise it can be buggy) so I think old saves won´t be compatible once erosion is included in the vanilla-game (or it simply takes no effect when playing a "old" save).

Damn, I hope it just doesn't take effect and not ruin my save game.

  9. Question: I assume that build 28 is compatible with build 27 saves, how would erosion factor into this? Will the erosion start the moment I play on (I'm at 2,5 months) of will erosion of 2,5 months be instantly introduced? I hope all the new stuff like the hunting rifle will still spawn because I'm already 20+ hours into my save game and have built a massive fort and a sky bridge spanning the entirety of Muldraugh.

  10.

Hmm, learned a lot in this thread. I usually go with brooding, light drinker and short tempered <--> stout and lucky. Would it be possible to change the traits of your character mid game? I already spent 20 hours making a massive fort and building skybridges and don't want to start all over.

Not traditionally, perhaps there's a mod or save editor out there that'll allow you to do that.

There isn't. There is one for world settings, but not character settings.

  12.

I'm currently trying to get a nice lovely base set up in the knobby creaky place at the motel or lodge or somewhere and loot like all the ammo I can. After that, I'll back the save up and make a whole bunch of attempts to fiddle with the mall because i get scared very easily also i really hope they never ever remove the save backing uppy thingy.

I don't think that all of the ammo in the map would suffice against the amount of zombies. I forgot that I could backup my character, darn!

Could be, I have scavenged 792 shotgun shells from the Big Warehouse and McCoy (including breaking all crates to reach the unaccessibles) and 480 pistol ammo.

  13. Thanks for this mod, it's really helpful! I already scavenged all of the nails in the Big Warehouse and McCoy (and breaking all the crates) and alrerady almost used them all up on my base. Now I'm building a skybridge to the south of Muldraugh with dowels. (just a vanity project to stop me from becoming bored). (I can't seem to post a picture)

  14.

There is a finite amount of nails I think. You can find lots though. In the North Warehouse in Muldraugh I found about 3-4 boxes (100 per box) and the same amount when I broke all the crates with the sledgehammer.

Wait, you can break crates?  And get nails from them?

(You don't get nails from destroying them, but the stuff left inside)

Yes, you are certain to find a sledgehammer there. You just need one in your main inventory and you can click: Destroy crate (furniture). You cant access about 60% of the crates there since they are stacked too high. (fedora) The stuff that's inside drops on the floor. It will take a while, but you can also opt to just go to McCoy Logging if you want faster acces.

  15. Lot's of interesting ideas here and also nice to see people's reasoning for the places they chose.

I was looking more from a centralised perspective, something that has good security, close enough to loot the shops and the houses too and has opportunity to minimise on resources used (e.g.  A pre-existing wall to build up to).

I went to Twiggy's but I didn't like the layout, it does seem close to the shops and good for that Mall run, but there's no bed! (Yes, I know it's just cosmetic because you can sleep on chairs, but I like the idea of my character sleeping in a bed).  Also I couldn't find the second fridge - not that this makes any difference as after the power goes out it becomes moot.

Kajin, are you talking about this row of houses? - http://pzmap.crash-override.net/#0.6406887885453215,0.10434870739956738,87.14228238844818

That's an interesting spot, might give it a try for a second base.

Does anyone know if there is a finite amount of nails in the game?  Or if the devs intend to make it finite?

  16. Twiggy's seems better to me. It's more dangerous and there are more zombies but you have a lot of storing space and two fridges. You are close to the best parts of town, but you will have to go a (relatively) long way to get to the houses. Fishing is also an option there. I would consider this for the more advanced Zomboid players.

  17. I don't know if I can justify forking out for a 1TB SSD, with a predetermined number of write cycles till it goes fubar. I've got an assortment of HDDs ranging from 250GB to 1TB, some of which have lasted me 6 or more years and are still going strong.

Losing a large drive would be like losing skin off your back - you know it's gone, but you aren't entirely sure exactly what was on there, or what it was used for...

That's why I've stuck with the smaller ones for now anyway, perhaps one day I'll risk that jump into running it all on solid state.

Lastly, I didn't even realise there were still computers running 3GB/s SATA around, I wouldn't exactly call my current gaming rig 'new', but it'll be running them at 6GB/s (when they arrive... curse those couriers having weekends off!)

Yeah, I bought a medium-high gaming pc four years ago (1250€) and it's starting to age. Don't really know much about the technical details, I just ask my dad "How can I make my games run faster?" and he gives me recommendations.

  18. I've got a 1 TB SSD (3gb/s SATA) on which I installed everything (OS and games), my 1 TB HDD is only used for big data like photo's. I've noticed a small increase in game loading speed (a bit eg the Sims and Civ 5) and a general increase in loading times (like opening a website, folders, startup went from 4 min to 30 sec). I'm sure it would be even better when I upgrade my pc to have 6gb/s SATA.

I would save up for a 1TB SSD instead of buying a hybrid.
