Tomek
I moved my claustrophobic character to one of rich hoses in west Loisville, with access to river. I used sledgehammer to demolish internal walls on 2 floor but still gets panicked. Room I created is surely bigger then apartments in Rosewood (those above shops) I stayed at the beginning of this run. I conclude that claustrophobic doesn't update after demolishing internal walls. This is very minor issue, but still it would be nice if it got fixed.
getstoopid
I don't think that's a bug but simply how it should work. I understand claustrophobic (in project zomboid) as an irrational panic being surrounded by walls and having "nowhere to flee to". So it would make not much difference having a large room over a small one. Like agoraphobic as an irrational panic being in the open "without any protection from all the threats out there, maybe even the air that you breathe could be toxic anytime soon". LLcraigJ
If I'm not mistaken, these mechanics take into account the proximity to walls. If that is the case, then you might still be too close to X number of walls in order to trigger it.
WhiskeyTangoFoxX
Tearing down walls doesn't actually merge rooms from a technical perspective, you can most easily tell this by looking at the shading between the rooms. because of that the claustrophobic panic will trigger exactly as before in either part of the room

LLcraigJ
A youtuber Retanaru does some in depth videos on a lot of the mechanics in PZ, which is where my limited information on the topic is from. getstoopid
Pandorea
To add to all this - there is a plan to somewhat "overhaul" current traits system. So this is likely to change in the future.
