Sorry. May be a bit too late to add in my 2 cents into this thread, and may have already been mentioned :P but... There are a lot of issues with schools in pretty much every country around the globe (I've lived in 5 of them for a few years on each), and while some people might agree that it's a government issue that simply isn't paying teachers enough for teachers to actually do their job right (that's complete bulls1¡t right there), it comes down to the teachers themselves being the problem. There are many kinds of teachers, almost as many as there are different types of people (that's a lot :P) but it takes a special kind of teacher to actually make their classes entertaining and engaging -- I remember in high school almost every class was super dull, boring, even English class (which is a language I love, Spanish being my native language). The professor acted as if they hated their students, and everything they taught you would be straight out of a book, as in, they made you buy a book written by X person, then bring the book to class and read it to yourself while they sat on their chair behind their desk... But then there was my history teacher, who not only made me start loving history, but actually made me realize all of this back then, and suddenly I figured I wasn't going to let some crappy teacher make me hate something so much that it would actually have an impact on my future.

The history teacher taught you the stuff as if history was some sort of fairy tale story, and he told it like he was a freaking voice actor reading a theatre novel from a script, except there was no script and barely any books involved... just sit on your chair and listen. It was at the random tests he then would put in front of you a couple of times a month or so that you'd realize you actually remembered what he said, without you actually studying anything else extra or reading a book back home as "homework".

On a different note, more often than not you truly do not know what you will want to be doing for the rest of your life until you have a really good grasp at most of what they teach you in school, and sometimes it takes a few years for you to be matched to the right teacher, the person who will really open your eyes to something you will discover you love.

Cheers! Stay in school!

TL;DR: Eh... I disagree :P

Gasp! It's almost like teachers and professors are people too! You're exactly right but I'm just poking fun at the fact that it has to be said. Teachers are one of those professions where a lot is demanded out of that person without realizing what those demands entail. It's a stressful job where you have to juggle many different things, and have several different "audiences" so to speak. Yes, making entertaining lessons and appreciating your job is important. The job itself is incredibly difficult when considering some teaching positions are akin to social work (working at title 1, low income, schools). The reason why there are many apathetic teachers is because the job is an incredibly difficult one. Difficult if you take it upon yourself to do a good job and to the best of your abilities.

I know many a professional that work so that they can collect a check. Some are proud of this fact, some deny it, and others will not even think about it. I think it's a shame, especially as a teacher, to be so apathetic about something so important but there are reasons for this apathy. It's not an accident. While good teachers are sometimes born, it also takes time for a lot of people to develop the patience, tenacity, and selflessness necessary.A teacher could have been an unlucky person, and had the same experience as you except that they never had a good history teacher to show them how it's done. There are a lot of things that factor into making someone a "good" teacher but, while I don't think it's a silver bullet by any means, improving teacher pay would be fair. I'm not even going to mention the details about how much of my money goes into the classroom. Anyway, while I agree with much of what you're saying, I became a teacher because I wanted to be like your history teacher. I became a teacher hoping to positively influence people's lives and instill in others a deeper appreciation for writing. However, the world of teaching (oh god. . . .), is not so black and white. There aren't just "good" teachers and "bad" teachers. The system as a whole needs reform and there are ways to positively change it. It's not like this is as good as school can get and we're just wasting our time trying to improve upon its execution. It's a noble goal to reform public schooling and it needs to be addressed so that more students get the chance to have teachers like your history professor you had as a student.

Agreed with all of it +Spaniard :) And yeah I suppose I *am* aware of Teachers' wages. The thing is I come from a South-American country where it *is* actually as easy as black and white when it comes to good and bad teachers; You only have 2 types of teachers in Uruguay, the type that are bad and not only don't catch the students' attention, yet seem to have all of their interest invested in punishing that kid for it... (and most of these eventually end up either quitting their jobs or taking the majority of the days in the year off so to "properly complain", not caring that what's on the line is not only theirs but the future of countless kids). And then you have good teachers who will at the very least take it easy on you for not being the next Biology protégé just because you don't like Biology, or they aren't doing a great job at reading out loud what their trusty books say, or rather, what their trusty books have them say.

Perhaps I should have included in my post that it could also come down to where you live. In some countries it is truly a miracle that a kid will make it out of school instead of dropping out.

As for teachers also being people :P I guess! :P

In seriousness though, I think a lot of teachers (at least in third world countries) should realize that it is not enough for them to just be "people", they need to be so much more for their students. They need to be a beacon of light, a role model.

In my home country there is such a thing as public schools, but 90% of those kids assist school just so they can hang out with their friends, smoke in the bathrooms and occasionally revolt for no reason whatsoever other than it's fun to go in an adventure. Most of them have parents that for similar reasons when they were young do not push their kids hard enough, and so sadly that falls onto the shoulders of teachers, to sometimes also be a fatherly or motherly figure that will try to push you slightly in the right direction to do your best rather than try their hardest for you to hate being there as much as they seem to.

All of that said, I wouldn't have minded at all to have you as a teacher Spaniard in whatever it is you teach, you do sound like a person with their head put right where it needs to be.

My mum is a textiles and art teacher (she also dabbles in food tec) teacher in one of the local high schools in my area, she enjoys her work even though she says the marking can be quite taxing when it's late at night.

Her school is quite full of events (to me) as it is a bigger school with about 800 students,

but it is quite an (unposh) school because of that and the fact it is a state school.

that is one of the reasons I go to private school, as even she did not want me to go there, citing the lack of support and behaviour.

You're complaining about private school?

My mother works as a teaching assistant at a private school half an hour out of my town and constantly goes on about how she'd have loved to have sent me and my sister there instead of where we were sent.

EDIT:

I'm not 100% if you are complaining about it, now that I re-read it.

yeah, I'm not complaining, just saying that at some times (read:mostly all the time) it can be quite monotonous and boring, although I absolutely love physics.

if there is one lesson I actually retreat from my thoughts,it's physics.

and also this song is good for doing homework I find.
