Moose65 Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 After a quick glance........is there any reason to change from my current playstyle of fishing? Right now it doesn't seem like veggies or fruits are required, so farming and/or foraging could be ignored it seems :/
vanorfeadiel Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 If you are playing with Build 34 I would avoid foraging for food and only for material. I would suggest farming is worth it, not sure about fishing yet. Will let you know once I'm done through the list.
Moose65 Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 Well, looks like a outdoor survivalist might not even be viable anymore. Food is draining at such a rate that I literally spend all my time eating and gathering food. Fishing further punishes you by causing depression.....making you spend even more time trying to transfer items, forage, and fish. If I could trap that would be a nice addition, but you can't build the simplest traps without looting twine + a saw. Would be nice if we could get the option to forage for materials for a stick trap, to reward that playstyle. Right now, from fishing and foraging all day long, I cannot get my character above -3500 calories. I literally have to eat everything I find, so there will be no saving food up for winter. I'm gonna see if it gets better as I get a few fishing/cooking levels, but right now its not looking like you can live off the land any longer. Edit: Ok, its starting to feel like there is way too much micromanagement. I finally got things somewhat under control after a night of fishing, but the extremes I'm having to go to is really silly. First, I have to fillet all the fish (not complaining about that part). Now, I have to fillet the fillets into about 50+ pieces, just so I can make single servings of stir fry to counteract all the sadness spent from fishing all day. Then, I forage, and fish again. By then its midnight and I pretty much have to go to bed on the character. Part of the problem is fishing, but part of the problem is the hunger drain seems much faster than before. Still can't get above -3500 calories even after all this :/ Edit Edit: Ironically, actually cooking food isn't feasible. Before, I had time to spend to actually cook the fish I caught, but with this constant hunger clock, there is simply no time to spare to build a fire and actually cook the food. Its fillet, stir fry, fish, sleep :/
Spatz Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 Yes, I can confirm some minor problems with micromanagment about food. I did have a foraging-character last game. When I was going to search for mushrooms for cooking with, I did find a whole lot (!) of berries. So after a few days, I had about 100 berries in my refrigerator (I did play on "first week").That was more food than I could use. But the annoying problem was in fact, to have to click 20 berries to get one kind of meal...I would prefer it a lot, to be able to eat a special number of berries at one time, in order to make it less micro-click-intensive.
vanorfeadiel Posted February 6, 2016 Author Posted February 6, 2016 If we increased berries and mushroom to what I would consider realistic calories level. Berries: 28 for the less filling one and 57 for the more filling one (instead of 3 and 4)Mushroom: 52 for the Hunger: -3 ones and 86 for the Hunger: -4 (instead of 4 in both case) Would already go a long way to tweak survivability while adding realism (when you can combine better gameplay and realism at the same time you should take it ). Will focus on other foraging, fishing and trapping items today and see how that goes.

They are all pretty small and light in calories, so I'd say that part is quite realistic. Unless you find (or build... if you could) a mushrom farm. There is one thing that could be added to make the survalist life easier: honey (it has already been added in the game) and you would obviously have to deal with the bees as well. This would fix the calorie part. Fruts are also a good calorie source thanks to the suggar they pack. Potatos, as mentioned in the other thread, would make things easier. Now, a real survalist would need to have some expertise in hunting as well. Fish is nice protein wise, but the fish in the rivers are not rich in fat. Animals on the other side, are. Most of the animals need to grow fat protection for the winter, so there we could have another high caloric food.

Most of the animals need to grow fat protection for the winter, so there we could have another high caloric food. Honey would be a nice addition to the foraging loot table, since there are still so many "empty" levels (specifically 1, 3, 5, 9, and 10). I'm sure there are plenty of other things too. Right now you cannot enable basic trapping without going to the trouble of finding twine and a saw. I really think that level 3 or 5 should allow you to gather mats to build a stick trap (perhaps allowing twigs or tree branches to replace the sturdy stick, and adding a new material to replace twine). I'd like to see if its possible to get by when you can add in trapping. I'm gonna try perhaps adding in a little bit of farming, as much as I don't want to. Finding a few seed packets isn't too bad, I'll just have to see how damaging it is from digging by hand. If I can't keep them healed from poultices (btw, does this still require carpentry? Should be able to make one from just a bowl and a stone >.>), then that will simply add another required item before heading out :/
Moose65 Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 Think I found what is causing a lot of my issues. I'm getting zero calories when I'm eating fish fillet stir frys. Actually, I'm getting no nutrients at all from it, aside from hunger reduction. Edit: It's not just the stir fry, fillets give no nutrients at all :/ Gonna wait till this is fixed before doing anymore outdoor survival testing.
Way2sp00ky Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 Well, looks like a outdoor survivalist might not even be viable anymore. Its fillet, stir fry, fish, sleep :/ Well, the problem is the type of elements you can find just with foraging. Should be able to make one from just a bowl and a stone >.>), then that will simply add another required item before heading out :/ As for the trapping using natural means, perhaps being able to make cordage out of branches? A recipe could use a sharp rock or knife and the branch. For the saw, I think it would be ok to grab one before heading into the wilderness, or make them a bit easier to find, I would think most people would have one in their garage.

vanorfeadiel Posted February 6, 2016 Author Posted February 6, 2016 Farming Items and Suggested Changes are now complete. Will play a bit more with farming and those new values to confirm that I picked the right location.
Ohbal Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 The caggabe caloric value seems too high to me, aint it? (IRL)100g of cabbage = 25 cal100g of potato =77 cal Carrots are a bit low (should be around 41); strewberries should be around 15 (for their weight); Raddish on 7 (which would give us a reason to grow them, right now there isn't XD); the others are in normal range.
vanorfeadiel Posted February 6, 2016 Author Posted February 6, 2016 The cabbage is for a full head of cabbage at 1 PZ weight ( 1000g). Potato is for a medium size one at 0.2 PZ (213g) Carrots are for a single 1 at 0.1 PZ might increase it to 2 carrots per icon (waiting to get the see the icon back in game, is it a single carrot or more than 1 which I would go with 2 for a PZ weight of 0.2) Strawberries I'm going with 100g of strawberries for 0.1 PZ at 32 calories.
vanorfeadiel Posted February 7, 2016 Author Posted February 7, 2016 Almost Done, just need to find the fishes in the files now... Will postin a new format once I give my nutritional value a spin in game.
vanorfeadiel Posted February 7, 2016 Author Posted February 7, 2016 Insects, worms and wild eggs are in the list now.
vanorfeadiel Posted February 7, 2016 Author Posted February 7, 2016 Wow, fun facts: There are more calories in an adult cockroach then an adult domestic mouse. Things you learn thanks to Project Zomboid . So, Robert, there will be a problem with the Smallanimalmeat. Rat, Squirrel and Mouse all become Smallanimalmeat. Smallanimalmeat has its own caloric value. Works fine for Rat, not so well for mouse and squirrel. The Smallanimalmeat like the fish fillet should get the value base of the initial item. I believe that the butchered should actually have more calories than the non-butchered animal. Tearing through fur or feather with your teeth would likely make you waste a lot more than if you butcher it properly. For fish, it's more complicated. Some fish can be eaten whole and other are better if they are filleted. Finally, cooking should be used in butchering and making fillet. A higher level cook would have no waste and recover all the meat while an inexperienced one would throw away a lot of the meat. This would make cooking extremely valuable both for mental health (happiness from good recipies) and more efficient use of fish and animal.
vanorfeadiel Posted February 7, 2016 Author Posted February 7, 2016 Actually, squirrels are fine, close enough to rats. Mouse are really the problem... I take that back, squirrels are A LOT leaner then rats (which shows in the nutritional data):http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/lamb-veal-and-game-products/4652/2
