  1. In the end I think there should be no ultimate "I win" weapon.

You know, 'the' weapon that once you have it renders all other weapons pointless.

I think players should find it a difficult choice to pass up on a weapon they happen across. For example, I find it nigh heart-wrenching to pass by a Fire Axe without taking it because I value them. Same for baseball bats and even kitchen knives on occasion.

And I love that feeling! That's how I know I'm playing a true survival game!

Of course some weapons will definitely be better than others ("Butterknife or Fireaxe? Hmmm..."), but I do think it's important to bridge the gap between all of the weapons in terms of their effectiveness or their "level curve".

For example, if a Cricket Bat and Baseball Bat had identical damage and durability, then you would see more people walking around with either of those weapons and things would just feel more varied. They would both be valued.

However, if the Baseball Bat was better than the cricket bat, then people would either pass up on the Cricket Bat entirely or drop it in exchange for a Baseball Bat ASAP. And things become linear, boring and repetitive.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I disagree with the typical "weapon level up" system that many games employ where you outgrow starter weapons far too quickly and so early in the game that people learn to bypass one third of the arsenal available because "they'll find something better shortly".

Everything should have a value to the player, even after several months have passed in game.

  2. I really, really, really, really don't want to see Project Zomboid go down the DayZ route and add military grade weapons to the game.

As a matter of fact, i'd be happy just to leave it at Pistols and Shotguns. The melee focus of Project Zomboid is one of the things I love about it the most and it means you need to be up and personal. Sniping or shooting from a distance is just too easy, impersonal and boring.

I'd love to see more conventional weapons. Things that you WOULD find laying around in somebody's house or garden. So I guess:

    I would like:

    • Weapon "mods" such as wrapping barbed wire around a bat or wrapping a toaster in a towel.
    • Garden tools
    • Small hand axes
    • Combat Knives
    • Low-grade pistols
    • Pickaxes
    • Metal poles (rebars)
    • Home made explosives or combustibles (beyond molotovs)
    • Chainsaw. Not only would you find one in a place like Muldraugh, but it has the drawback of being very loud. Also doubles up as a great way of getting lumber!

    I would NOT like:

    • Machine Guns or any automatic rifles or subs.
    • Mediaeval or Ninja-Wannabe weapons. Most of your replica / commercial katanas for example are squared or dulled or so cheaply made that they would have no practical use and would break easily. A viking battleaxe also has no place in Muldraugh and would be immersion breaking to me.
    • Unrealistic Mods. Dead Island's "Electric" and "Venom" blade mods were a bit unrealistic.
    • No Sniper Rifles....
    • NO SILENCED WEAPONS!!!

I'm still not sure about the whole bow and arrow or crossbow thing....

I think that's the sort of action hero route and I doubt your average Joe would even know how to make an effective bow.

  3. OHHH MY GAWW!

    I got it!!

It was AVG Free AntiVirus all along, the son-of-a-gun! I am absolutely ashamed!

I temporarily disabled AVG in the past but it was at a time where I was testing too many things at once and I may have missed it entirely.

In the end I had to uninstall AVG Free and reinstall the latest 2014 version and now all is perfect!

I just want to apologize to all the people that have helped me with this issue. I feel terrible that I've wasted your time on such a rookie error. Still can't believe it.

For anyone else still suffering the issue, don't underestimate your Virus guard!

My thanks again to the awesome people trying to help me with this.

I'm off to drink bleach now to make up for it

  4. Okay guys some progress. I'm still stuck, but I've nailed it down.

My Wife could join my server multiple times from her machine on the same public IP.

My Wife can host a game and join it as many times she likes to her own server.

I can only connect to my Wife's server ONCE, then I presented with infinite loading once again.

    So ultimately, it's MY client!

I have no idea what to do now. I've reinstalled (and deleted) the game so many times now, so unless there are hidden files in places other than SteamApps and User>Zomboid, I don't know where to go next.

The only differences between my Wife's setup and mine is that she only has Java installed in her Program Files (x86) and is running windows 8.

Where I have both a 32-bit and 64-bit version of Java installed and run Windows 7.

    **EDIT**

I just completely removed Java and did a fresh install with only 1 version (rather than both 32-bit and 64-bit) and it had no difference.

    So it's not Java.

  5. I believe they're aware of that issue and that a fix has already been committed.

However, until they apply it in the next release / update you will just need to manually enter the IP and username each time and click "Quick Join".

    It's only temporary.  :)

  6.

Are you able to start up a server on your machine and connect via localhost and see what happens? That will at least show if you can connect to any server at all.

Yeah we've been through quite a lot of options already. But I don't expect you to read back the last few pages of this thread. It's been on going for a while. :)

    In short.

     I can:

    • Host a server on my PC (with fibrewire speed and 4GB allocated to it)
    • Connect to it just fine the first time it starts. (I can connect via "local host", "127.0.0.1" and my external IP. Each works)
    • Have my friends join and play without lag or issue. They can connect multiple times and with new saves / characters

    I cannot:

    • Connect to my server a second time. (Exiting the server and trying to reconnect results in an infinite loading screen)
    • Connect to my server again until I delete the world save ("servertest" folder)

    Other notes:

    • I have forwarded 16261 UDP and 16262-16282 TCP + UDP (for 20 man server. Plus my friends can connect which is evidence it works)
    • I have confirmed my Firewall is not blocking PZ 32-bit or 64-bit.
    • It has been noted by EasyPickins that my server is definitely sending packets but my client fails to receive them after a certain amount. Again, this only happens if I try to connect to my server after having previously played on it.
    • I have tried completely uninstalling PZ and deleting all folders and files associated with it to allow for a fresh install.
    • This problem occurs on both "-onlinetest" and the IWBMS branch (build 25)
  7. Thanks for your attempt Fegelein but unforntuantely I've already exhausted those suggestions.

Furthermore, with the IWBMS branch it is not possible to join a game without a username. (The "Quick Join" option is greyed out until you enter a username)

My Wife has just bought the game (Woooo Indie Stone! Woooo!) so we will attempt to host a Multiplayer tonight when I am home from work and see if she shares the same problems as me. This way we can establish whether it is isolated to my machine or something to do with our IP / Router / Ports.

I will post the results later tonight. :)

  8. Sorry for the double-post but just thought I'd keep up the momentum on this.

When I got back from work I ran a Java verification. It told me I had an "up to date" version but also an "old version that can be removed".

Because my browser is 32-bit, I didn't trust it, so I manually downloaded the latest versions of both 32-bit and 64-bit Java.

Now I'm definitely up to date.

This sadly had no impact on my PZ experience and I still can only connect to my server once per "world".

I've also tried running PZ in compatibility mode and through the 32-bit client exe.

    Still no luck.

  9. Hmmmmm!

Sounds more like a client thing then. It would make sense, given that my friends can connect to my server an infinite number of times and never experience world holes.

It wouldn't have anything to do with 32-bit / 64-bit .exe variations?

I have Windows 7 and usually run PZ on 64-bit.

Or perhaps it's a Java issue?

Even though I checked Java lastnight and I apparently had the latest build, I'm really stuck for ideas.

  10. 16261 is UDP only, but the others must be TCP + UDP according to http://theindiestone.com/forums/index.php/topic/6305-27-more/#entry86274

I just forwarded 16262-16282 on UDP as well as TCP and it sadly didn't make a difference.

I am unsure if this next point has any relevance, but I encounter "world holes" fairly regularly when I play.

However my friends do not. In fact they've never seen a world hole yet in our entire time playing.

I seem to be the only one that gets them AND I can only connect to my server once per "world". Is there a connection?

(You can tell I'm clutching at straws here haha)

  11. Here's the result of the IWBMS4.zip.

    muzScCD.jpg

    Server Left.

    Client Right.

    Different again.
Look, it's "Delay Processing Packet of type 64" this time!

I also noticed a "Type 78" show up once as well but I had already uploaded the screenshot by the time I noticed it.

You might notice a disconnection notification. That's because when I first tried to connect I got "Connection Failed".

When I tried again immediately after, I got in.

As always, I play for a few mins and then disconnect. When I try to reconnect it's just the usual story with the infinite loading.

What you see in the consoles above is what's happening while I'm sitting on "Loading".

Just want to say thanks for your continued help EasyPickins. I acknowledge your tenacity, so thank you. :)

  12. One more time if you can.  It looks like the socket is blocking, but I don't know yet whether it is on the server or client side.

Here's the result using your IWBM3.zip:

    v1frXxd.jpg

    Server Left

    Client Right

A little different than last time.

    **EDIT**

As an experiment, I tried deleting my character and server data (they're backed up elsewhere) and launching a fresh new server with your added files. However it won't let me connect with my normal username (Vantus) on the FIRST try any more, never mind a second.

Oddly, after entering my Username and IP and I click "Quick Join", it flashes with "Connecting" at the bottom for only a second. The message then disappears and nothing happens. As in, I don't proceed to the intro text. I don't even leave the server menu.

So I can keep clicking "Quick Join" and continually prompt a brief "Connecting" message at the bottom over and over.

On occasion though I do get a flicker of "Account Already Exists" before the message disappears which is odd considering I deleted my "<IP>_Vantus" profile along with the servertest folder. It remembers me somehow. Perhaps because I previously used a password with that username? Has it left a log somewhere?

Furthermore! I tried connecting to my previously backed up server using a different Username, one with a password and one without.

Both times I sat on the loading screen as usual. It's like all it cares about is my IP and I can't trick my server into thinking I'm a different person (or connection) even with different usernames and passwords.

    It knooooows!

So TL;DNR, the 2 main discoveries here are:

    • Server seems to remember my "Vantus" Username now, even if I delete that User Profile and "servertest" from the Multiplayer folder and host a brand new server. I get the occasional "Account already Exists" when trying to connect.
    • I can still connect to a fresh server (that I'm hosting) the FIRST time, so long as I use a different username other than "Vantus". (Perhaps using a password in the past has left a remnant file/whitlelist log somewhere that's interfering?)
    • Subsequent attempts to log in after a first successful log in result in the permanent loading screen as before.
  13. Hey EasyPickins, thanks for getting back.

I'll just paste my step-by-step from earlier since it sums it up in full.

Try revalidating the game, then deleting your savegame. It sounds like something's glitchy with the way your version is saving it's saves.

    Thanks for getting back.

I tried validating my game files and deleting both my character save and (later) my server save. Sadly this didn't fix it.

I actually went the whole nine yards and completely uninstalled Project Zomboid and deleted all associated files.

After a fresh start it still didn't fix the issue.

Here's a step-by-step guide to what I'm doing (with screenshots!). Keeping in mind that I've already successfully forwarded my ports:

    1. Launch the Server

    jsv06Q2.jpg

    2. Wait for server to start then launch Project Zomboid (64-bit), enter the correct IP, Port and a Username. Then join.

    3. Success!! I'm on my server and playing without issue. (See just how fabulous my character is!)

    FQMGmQG.jpg

    4. I check the Player List to make sure I'm definitely online. Aah-yup!

    W9Q6Hem.jpg

    5. I decide I don't like being quite so fabulous so I decide to come out of the game.

    6. I forgot I left a dead rat in the cooker at Baldspot and Kates house, so I decide to go back in to stop it!
(Without closing, restarting or deleting the server)

    7. Unfortunately my days of being fabulous are over because I am unable to get back in. I am presented with a forever loading screen.

    zmIQ591.jpg

    8. I alt+tab to check the console and see this:

    LHYxlxb.jpg

    9. I cry into my Weetabix.

So there you have it. I'm sorry I didn't have any of my friends around to occupy the server as back up in my screenshots but I can confirm that while I experience all of the above, they can join and disconnect as frequently as they wish, even with new characters.

The only way for me to get back into multiplayer again is to delete the "servertest" folder in my User>Zomboid>Sandbox directory, thus undoing any work we've achieved on that world save. I am then subject to my One-time-connect rule in the new world save. Rinse and repeat.

I hope this helps or at least highlights where it is I am going wrong! :)

    TL;DNR:

    • I host a server on my machine
    • I connect to that server with my friends and play just fine. (Using either "localhost" or my IP)
    • I disconnect from my server (whether optional or because I encounter a world hole)
    • I try to reconnect to my server using the same method as before.
    • I "connect" fine but once the intro text ends, It does not proceed into the game. I just sit with a black screen and "loading".
    • In the console I get "Delay Processing Packet of type 78 while loading game"
    • Only way for me to play again is to delete the server files and start again.
  14. Try the IWBMS branch on Steam.

    Just tried this.

I connected to my server no problem the first time as it usually does.

I went to try a second time... My eyes widened in hope...

    Aaaahhhh-nothing.  Exactly the same problem.

Get into my server and play with my friends but if I disconnect I am not allowed back into the server again until I delete it.

    Sad face.  :(

  15. I'm still getting the problem myself and have gone to.. "odd" lengths to try and work out what the problem is.

I've decided to abandon the issue since all leads come to a dead end and everyone else has fallen silent on it or are repeating common fixes that aren't working in my case.

My friends and I are taking a wee break from Zomboid and are waiting for build 25 to see if it somehow fixes it.

    Here's hoping!  :)

  16. Personally, I don't see the port testers linked on this forum as the be-all-and-end-all.

I have the exact same result as the OP (saying my ports are closed) even though my ports are forwarded and I am running around on my Server with my friends.

It's not completely accurate from my experience.

  17. ^ This exactly, except i'm more of a cheerios guy : P - I guess the only thing we have in common is that we are the ones running the server? Is it on the same machine that you have the server running and the game client like me?

Yep, I host the server in the background and then connect to it on the same machine.

I'm clutching at straws here, but It's almost like it's allowing a one-time pass of my IP, stores it somewhere in the "servertest" folder, then denies any further access to the server via that IP.

Deleting the "servertest" folder wipes it's memory and allows the process to start again.

  18. Try revalidating the game, then deleting your savegame. It sounds like something's glitchy with the way your version is saving it's saves.

  19. I can confirm that I am getting the exact same issue as Hindrancescorn with the only difference being that I don't use Hamachi.

Here's my report on another thread:

I followed the port forwarding instructions so that I had space for 32 players.
Every one of my friends can connect to my server no problem, including myself.

    However!

If I disconnect from my server at any point whether due to world holes, crashes or a genuine disconnect, I am not able to rejoin my server without closing the server and deleting local files associated with it.

As a general rule, I normally enter the game shortly after it says "There was no hope for survival".
However when I proceed with a connection the second time, it gives me the full intro sequence and continues until the music ends.
I am then left with a silent black screen with "Loading" at the bottom.

Out of curiosity I left it running so that my friends could enjoy playing while I went to go pick up the Mrs from work. 30 minutes later it was still "loading".

It is not my firewall settings (before anyone says it) since I can confirm that I can play for as long as I want on the first try, so long as I don't disconnect.
It only seems to be me that is struck by this rule since my friends can connect and disconnect as many times as they like and get straight back in each time.

It's a weird one and I'd love to know a work around in the meantime since we want to record our antics and give this game the publicity it bloody well deserves!

It definitely seems to be related to the server host connecting to their own server, perhaps not at first but definitely thereafter. It's a pity because deleting the servertest folder removes all player-made construction. This is a shame because I can't convince my friends to build anything or experiment with farming because at the first sign of a world-hole or if I disconnect, I'd need to delete the world in order to play again.

It's quite funny actually, they're calling it "Starbound Syndrome"! (Unwilling to invest in later content for fear it'll be wiped shortly after).

Anyway, This has been an incredible first-pass of the Multiplayer so this minor inconvenience is nothing (at least for me) and I'm sure it'll be sorted soon. Just let me know if there's anything else I can supply you with to help out.   :)
