Clip (Modded - 4 mths ago):

Reproduction steps are easy:
- Walk backwards while aiming at two or more sprinters
- Swing with spear
- Hit spacebar after swing (Seems to happen more the sooner you do it)
- Shove targets the zombie behind the one you've targetted

Additional notes:
- I've had this happen rarely at long distances as well - more than 2 tiles

- This is a pretty common bug, the way I've tried to play around it is to try not to shove too fast after a spear swing, and try not to start holding spacebar until I'm sure the spear has finished swinging fully

Yeah, the first two clips make it look like it doesn't target the leading zombie if the spear's target falls onto the head of the nearest zombie. Not sure what's going on there or if it's a case of debug misleading us all. Either way, it feels wrong.

In the third one, I think it's because you were turning from one zombie to another and started the shove too late / while trying to turn into the hit?

What makes it hard to interpret these things after the fact is that the overlay isn't predictive in any way; it doesn't give cues to timing (purely distance) and I suspect in this scenario you probably have to swing a little earlier than you are (making up for the time to react and commit to the swing), as I think you're only reacting to it turning green and by then the zombie has gotten closer. Unless I'm mistaken, you also don't have multihit on, which makes fighting multiple zombies this way a very bad idea. I would suggest always kiting in these scenarios, especially with the spear and multiple zombies.

Yep no multihit.

Third one is a bit hard to see because of the distance.

Here's another one similar which seems to support your theory.

I get what you mean about the overlay being representative not predictive. I've learnt a lot instinctually especially when fighting around fences.

I tend to explain to people to use what they see as a guide and learn the feeling of what's actually happening but it's a hard conversation sometimes.

The shove I treat as a personal skill issue because 2v1 it doesn't matter whether I shove the one behind or in front, so long as I time it correctly I can shove one and dodge the others attack in the process with the shove.

I'll try get a console log in the right spot and play around to see if I can dig up some more context/info. Let me know if you've got somewhere you think I should look first.

I got another clip - this one has the distance a bit better.

Real game, only 1 mod - m3ss twitch stats.
