Any news on this issue? It is still present in 42.7.0.  

It is completely surrounded by trees yeah. It was also the day after I installed a generator, so I think you could be right. However I have been foraging in the same woods for weeks and didn't see any. Not sure how loud the generator is in b42, could it be they came from outside the forest/ the edges of the forest?    Thanks for your reply!

Version: [42.7.0] Mode: [Singleplayer] Save: [Old Save] Reproduction steps: Carved a baseball bat from a Large Branch found from foraging. Tried to craft a 'Can-Reinforced Long Weapon' with the crafted baseball bat but it said missing required items, but I already have all the required items and also nearby a surface.
