You can build floors over gaps, and even get all fancy with it and build railings on them so they look spiffy. I have a Desura save where I converted the large warehouse into a fortress, and the only entrance is a 4 story free standing stairwell about 50 yards away, and then a series of walkways 4 stories up that lead up to the roof of a building I built on the roof of the original building.
