@Beard - Test done. This is after finfding another house with a similar floor plan (@ X:6720 Y:5490) in the Riverside gated community.
I built a balcony along the north side, where the default plumbing items are located, and I left their positions unchanged.
After adding rain barrels (max. 1 tile away from each plumbing fixture), all plumbing items do show the additional "plumb item" text, meaning they can be connected to the recently crafted & placed rain barrels.
Then I moved the plumbing items around, similar to the changes I made to my base house (@ X:6810 Y:5435):
Location 1: When sink is moved to layout B or C positons, then it can't be plumbed to the rain barrels above.
Location 2: No changes made, so these items consistently recognise rain barrels added.
Location 3: When the sink and toilet are moved to layout B & C positions, these can't be plumbed to the rain barrels.
The save attached is after the changes made to the test house (@ X;6720 Y:5490).

If that's how it works (the calorie reduction) then that is dumb. I honestly have never paid much attention to exact nutrition in meals as the levels increase but I'll take your word on it.
Side topic: one of the things that I hate about how recipes work is that everything is too restrictive. There is no reason why a beef patty couldn't go in soup, or on a sandwich. I understand there needs to be some kind of standards for what is a soup, or a stew, or a sandwich, or a burger but cmon! The number of times I have gone to use excess beef patties and accidentally started a soup instead of a stew-- I can't even guess.
Yes, it makes sense to maximize the amout of food you get out of each item- but like. If I am cooking a soup I do not cut off a tiny portion of the onion and not put it into the soup. Who does that. I would like the entire food item in the meal.
(Also, the game isn't just giving you free food, you actually put less food into the dish in turn- this is why cooking at level 10 actually gives fewer calories than cooking at level 9, you save enough food from level 10 that it supercedes the free calorie generation of cooking levels)
Will definitely share the save file. I checked the save file, and it's currently around 70MB (uncompressed) and 16MB (compressed).
But I'll find a house to do the test on first, then I can share the file with both locations built up. Hopefully that clears up what the issue is.
