How to make a trait depend on server side Sandbox vars?

I am almost done creating a mod with a feature that I would like to give the option to server owners to lock with a trait. I would also like to allow them to adjust the cost of the trait.

 

The issue is that the client is disconnecting instantly whenever it joins a server without an alive character. The server does not seem to be able to send any data to the client.

 

Am I right to assume this is impossible to do? Is there any way to force the client to wait for a packet before disconnecting?
