New Dawn Roleplay Server Lore and Timeline of Events

Recommended Posts

We have been running a large and ever growing role-play server for Project Zomboid for sometime.  Recently we did a hard wipe and decided to stage the server with a story and then let the rest of the server unfold.  We have keep tabs on major events on the server and turned them into a story for sure worth the read.  The first section describes how we started the server quarantining everyone inside Muldraugh...Made for some awesome times.  The story is always a work in progress as things are happening and unfolding everyday here.  I hope you enjoy the read.  The first section was written by a dedicated member of the server, Jacey.  The rest was written by myself.

Eventually we will be adding short character bios and small images of their characters.

Our server information can be found here if anyone is interested in giving it a shot.

*The voice of a young woman with a European accent comes from the computer*

“We thought we had it all figured out…we thought we ended world pestilence…we were so wrong. We created something we thought was beautiful. APS-329…a system designed to distribute mass amounts of anti-viruses across the world to treat the sick. Imagine Africa being cured of all sickness in less than 4 hours. It was a remarkable dream and the results were so promising…then it happened. After APS-329’s deployment things began to take a turn for the worse. 95% of those in the deployed area began showing signs of aggression. Beatings, and killings…it was like they were losing their minds. The doctors couldn’t understand what was causing it so the CDC had to step in.

We were able to do an autopsy on one of the infected. I was in the room as we began cutting him open. We began with the brain. We split the cranium of his head and what we saw was indescribable. His brain was a shade of purple and smelled of rot. It was much too deteriorated for some as recently dead as he was. The next thing we knew the subject stood up and began attacking the head coroner. I stood in absolute shock as the HAZMAT team made it’s way into the room killing the subject. No one knew how to describe what we had just saw…no one at all. We took a sample of the brain and immediately began testing.

The results were devastating. The organism was a Prion. It hid deep inside the brain slowly degenerating the ability to reason. This wasn’t the most troubling part. The Prion was able to MAKE connections in its place reigniting the stimulus for the subject. This causes extreme aggression and complete loss of “humanity”. This was easily the most serious moment of all our lives. We knew something had to be done. We got the United States Government on the line and told them what exactly was happening. They took it as seriously as we did. They told us that high-priority military and governmental personnel were being moved to Fort Knox for the time being and that we were to move to there from Atlanta to help find steps to solve whatever this unique plague was. We began mobilizing immediately, packing everything we might need and heading to the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta.

We boarded a military C-17 and began our flight to Louisville. We heard reports of all the chaos…people were looting, killing…clawing at the gates to leave the hell they were in…it sounded like what had made us human was gone. *She sighs* When we landed a squad of National Guardsman greeted us. They loaded our luggage into 2 Humvee s and we moved towards Muldraugh. We took back roads there to avoid the panic on the highways from people running for their lives and people wrecking their vehicles trying to flee Muldraugh. Once we got there we saw them…all the people trying to escape…crying, screaming, shouting to the army to let them inside. I will never forget their faces. It was even more chaotic here. We knew Hell had found it’s way on Earth.

There were dismembered bodies…people half eaten…No one could ever forget what they saw. We were just outside of a hotel when the first Humvee got swarmed. We had to make a run for it. Everyone was Godless…running like savages…climbing like we were yet again primitive…one of the soldiers…a Corporal was bitten. He didn’t last long after that…he turned in a couple of hours. The rate of reaction from a bite stimulus is…catastrophic. Sooner than they had arrive, the Military walled up the entire city of Muldraugh trying to contain the infection from spreading its way to West Point and everywhere else. Inside the walls time was spent trying to kill off those who had turned inside.

The military held no regard for civilian life and in many cases could be seen watching people die at the hands of the turned without lending a hand. Guard Towers...checkpoints...everything. We were trapped in this hole now. By the fourth day equipment was scarce and people were fighting over anything they thought would help them survive. We saw Three people try to make it out by busting a hole through the wall but were shot by the guard towers in seconds. They have no mercy for us. None at all. I continue to collect and work on samples both original and fresh. The Prion itself is much too complex and shifts and evolves regularly…it’s nothing like we have ever seen…it seems to be the end to humanity. I hope…for all life on this planet. Only time will tell. Maybe we can eventually fix this."

**Addition 5/14/15**

When the walls went up and a week or so went by there wasn't much left keeping order within the town.  The Mayor and a few policeman accompanied him from time to time and could haveten be found at town hall.  First order, a  curfew was put into place.  Residents were asked to stay indoors from 22:00 hours to 5:00 hours.  Military and the Police were seen patrolling the streets killing the dead they came across and were given orders to write citations for those found breaking the curfew.  Repeat offenders didn't fare to well.  Those found repetitively breaking the laws were killed on site.  Survivors didn't care, they used the night to stealthy move in and out of abandoned houses looting and robbing people who were unable to protect themselves.

The Mayor was well respected in the town being reelected 6 times to run for the position.  People looked up to him before the shit broke out, and it was no surprise when the Mayor stayed to guide his people through these troublesome times.  With him and his right hand man, Munny, they tried to make sure society wouldn't fall.  Holding up in a makeshift Town Hall and using the speakers throughout the city for emergencies they were able to broadcast messages to everyone, anything from curfew announcements to when military are offering rations to the people. The Town Hall quickly began to be a hub for the police to take reports, people trading goods, or simply find companionship among the living.

People got too comfortable there, including the mayor.  They barricaded up the windows and doors and locked down, but it wasn't enough for the havoc that could would soon to break out.  No one was prepared for the day the horde came through.  Only a few people stayed there to fight off the horde, everyone else seemed to break away and run off into the distance.  Munny tried to convince the Mayor, but he being inflated by his ego, wanted to stay and hold City Hall, even if it meant the death of him.  It didn't take long, he was quickly overran by zombies flooding his location, surrounded and no where to go, you can hear him being eaten alive by the undead, left to turn into one of them soon.

Now with nothing but a few police officers roaming the streets and holding up at the city hall the citizens are left in the hands of the military which many don't trust.

*Updated 5/27/15*

Many of the citizens left in the town were in constant fear of the military that supposedly were here to protect us.  For a few days they went from house to house taking items from the people claiming it was a "tax".  At this point the town was not safe, tensions were high looting and robbing went sky high and survivors were killed over trivial things. At one point a settlement established called Haven was burnt to the ground, the arsonist never found.

During this time in need the police force was no where to be found.  When the Mayor was alive he planned with the Sheriff to send a team of men and women out past the walls, risking their lives trying to pass through the wall.  Their missions was to explore the outer area and bring enough guns and ammo to resupply the Police Force to take back over the town from the Military.  In the absence of the Sheriff and a few officers, someone took charge, an officer by the name Castillo.  She was ruthless and sassy.  She was the Judge, Jury and executioner, holding trials in the police station. A month or so later the men who were sent out past the walls finally came back, sneaking in one by one making sure never to be seen by the men patrolling the walls.  They brought a good amount of guns and ammo and when making the way back to the Sheriffs Office, was happy to see a newly formed police force.  All the police needed now was an opportunity and they would start to take back this town.

The military were desperate to keep control of the walls and the people inside at one point the military were giving out rations to the people inside.  The man ordered to hand out the rations felt bad for the citizens and was eventually caught for giving out more than what was authorized.  His punishment? A public murder at the local gas station. While they were torching the man they were heard making gruesome and threatening transmissions over the radio, trying to force everyone to view the scene they had created.  If they were willing to kill their own why would they stop at a normal person?

"Incoming Southern Wall, we have some live ones!" That was the radio transmission that started the events of that night off.  It was interesting to hear the calls through the night, spotting them periodically here and there radioing it to their comrades. Without warning they opened the doors to the town and let the 2 outsiders in.  People gathered at the wall for a few moments seeing what the commotion was about retreating back to their homes, no one wanted to hang around the military long, those who did usually ended up dead it seemed.  Before you knew it over the intercoms of Muldraugh you could hear the outsiders had taken off escaping the military heading to a near by community.  Hot in pursuit the military wanted them for whatever reason and would not stop until they had them.  The people saw and heard what was happening and were took these people running in for protection.

While they hid people were frantic with questions.  What was it like out there? How did you survive? Are they out there also? These people have no idea what was going on out there.  The military lying to them this whole time.  With this new information people had even more questions as to what was going on.  The questioning didn't last long the military quickly arrived at their location.  They were greeted with angry people and guns.  All they wanted were the outsiders and they would leave peacefully but that is not how things would turn out.  If the military couldn't take the outsiders they would kill them, putting a bullet in each of their heads no more of their wisdom or knowledge of the outside world could be passed on.

During this mess the Sheriff and a deputy set off in order to intercept these men responsible for the killing of the innocent people from outside our walls.  They had enough and they wanted their fucking town back!  They ran quickly to intercept the crazed gun men, but alas it was too late.  Other than the 2 outsiders, 2 civilians laid dead on the ground.  The police opened fire as soon as they saw then men and with the help of the enraged members of Haven over their loss, they took out the men responsible.  Everyone rejoiced the battle was over however there were casualties.  The Sheriff has been eaten and could be seen wandering the streets with his badge hanging from his tattered uniform.  After the Sheriffs department heard about the death of their own, the issued bulletins and announcements to give free passes to anyone to kill the military on site.  WE WANT THEM GONE!

**6/8/2015**

With the knowledge from the outsiders the people within the walls gained, there was much talk about how to get out of the walls and explore what remains outside.  The military was more prevalent after the outsiders showed up and escaped their custody, however with the lack of food and rations coming into the area their faces showed weakness and despair.  They were starving and their remaining supplies from weeks before were depleted. They survived their last few weeks of their lives stealing and killing innocent for items that would prolong their existence. Some took this as an opportunity to flee the area and made it through holes in the wall that were being destroyed.

The military had been venturing out looking for fuel and supplies to keep them going.  They managed to make their ways through West Point and Valley Station taking all the fuel they could find.  When they were seen venturing out at first they were able to bring back large barrels of fuel, now when they make their way back if they are lucky, they have a couple red gasoline cans full of fuel.  What no one knew was while the military had built the walls to keep people in, they had also brought equipment that blocked any outside transmissions from being received by the citizens contained. Without fuel to power the generators that ran this equipment the people were about to really find out what was out there without even having to leave the walls.

At first the transmissions people heard came in intermittently and with a lot of static.  Small bits and pieces could be made out from time to time but most of it couldn't be understood.  People questioned its origin, who was it? Where is it coming from? The day the message fully broke through it was made clear that there was lots of people still alive.  This lady, had been posted up in a radio station in West Point.  She went by the name Panther while on air,  It gave people hope, but it that didn't last for long.  During her Daily Zombie Report she left an ominous warning for those who were still left in Muldraugh. There was a large horde headed that way, not even the military would be able to take on the dead with the amount of ammunition and ballistics they had left.

They spotted the gigantic horde heading down the highway, the horde spanned so wide it was unbelievable.  The military scrambled to get their men and women together on the front lines to prepare for the hell that was about to come.  Shots and explosions could be heard throughout the whole town of Muldraugh as the dead made their way to the walls.  Quite a few people managed to escape into the woods before the horde migrated down. Their lives were spared for now, those left inside had to fight to make it out.  It was quite humorous watching the military run around trying to contain the dead.  Tossing Molotov's, grenades and make-shift explosives into the group, this didn't accomplish much but create a flaming horde of zombies.  Very quickly the walls that were built to keep the virus from spreading were being knocked over by the sheer weight and mass of the dead ascending on the walls. Then they breached the walls.

There was nothing anyone could do they were inside and flooding in from any opening quickly.  The military gave up, if they didnt burn to death from the spreading fires, or were eaten alive they could be seen blowing their brains out along the wall so they didn't have to suffer.  Dead bodies littered the wall both human and the infected.  This was the end of the quarantine.

The people who escaped were forced to start over.  A lot could be seen moving along the highway towards West Point, looking for refuge elsewhere.  Many of them also heard the ominous message that was broadcasting over the radio by Panther, "The bandit group once again kidnapped someone else, and returned them only after performing some tests." No where was safe for them to go.  Either they go back to Muldraugh where the place is crawling with the dead or they risk an unpleasant experience with these "bandits".

William Wiggins

Untitled.png

Under the handle Thomas Howard, he could walk past a police station unnoticed. His father was a hemp farmer who had passed away while William was young, leaving him with many responsibilities at a young age. Wiggins slowly began to turn to crime to have his way and managed to succeed in doing so. He provided his mother and relatives as well as his own family with plenty of money, only his wife knowing of the crimes he'd commit.

A bank robber, by his mid-twenties he had himself a crew and many infamous robberies and murders to his name. A couple of months before the outbreak however, a contractor had sold them out.

By January 2015, most of the Wiggins gang had either been killed or imprisoned. William now in his thirties was laying low in Muldraugh and before the walls were erected, he had moved his family with him to a cabin awhile outside. Originally skeptical of the apocalypse becoming a reality, he was quick to become a believer after seeing the military being dispatched all across Knox County, helicopters whizzing by every morning.

As food began to run out, he started to raid small military patrols alone, and it wasn't long before the military took notice of this. William continued this ploy until they managed to track down his cabin and with resistance, they shot his family. William being severely wounded with some scars still healing now, he made it out, upset and disheartened. He came back to Muldraugh to continue scavenging and such, but now seeks to put together a new gang just as he had before, because nothing will stop this bank robber.

William is 6"1' with black hair and blue eyes, his face has slight scars as well as several incompletely healed wounds along his chest.

While William can be playful and friendly, he tends to sometimes be aggressive and a lot of times upset, he is quite unpredictable.

  • William had been captured by a group that experimented on people, and after about a week of doing time and even had a few tests run on him, he managed to escape, unfortunately leaving his fellow inmates behind.
  • Wiggins has tracked various groups, attempting to learn about them before contacting them.

Sammy.png

Name: Samantha Castillo
Aliases: Cass, Sam, Sammy
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Relationship Status: Single
Occupation: Fish and Wildlife Commission Law Enforcement Officer

Physical Features:

Samantha sports dark black hair, typically tied back in a short pony tail or bun, hazel eyes, and a small scar running across the bridge of her nose. Another nickel sized scar can be found on her lower torso and she's missing her left ring finger. While small in stature, coming to a whopping 5'0", her stocky, muscled build and tan would be indicative of her rugged work outdoors. She speaks with a Southern accent that occasionally drawls, though when drunk it's a coin toss between a Southern and Spanish accent.

When in civilian attire, Sam can be usually be found wearing jeans, a tank top, tan work boots, and a black leather jacket. Not one to be caught unawares, she usually carries a Glock 23 .40 S&W with a 2 pound trigger pull and Trijicon night sights, a hunting knife as a holdout weapon in her boot, and a SOG hatchet sheathed along her belt.

Samantha once wore a local law enforcement uniform consisting of a light blue top and navy pants, a badge, a name tag, and despite not being an authorized part of the uniform before the quarantine started, black boots. She carried the same armament, however, she used a SERPA Level 3 tactical holster attached to her duty belt for her Glock 23 rather than an IWB holster.

Personality:

She has no interest in sugar coating the truth and speaks in a rather blunt fashion. Consequently, she often comes across as being impolite to downright rude. She's a bit of a perfectionist and has a habit of thinking she's always right, as a result, she becomes argumentative with anyone who disagrees with her when persuasion fails.

Due to the fact that she's an introvert and has trouble connecting with people, Samantha's not too big on forming close personal bonds with anyone outside of her family or her former patrol partner, as is evidence of her countless failed relationships. She chooses to remain distant from the people she currently works with along with the citizenry she's now forced to interact with.

In her seven years in the Sheriff's Office, she displayed a dogged determination to excel in her line of work and to help people. Walking a beat on the streets developed her cunning and quick wit to defuse situations with verbal judo before they escalated into violence. Failing that, her courage and cunning in the face of danger got her out of most dangerous situations unscathed.

After the incident that caused her to leave the department abruptly, Samantha's once positive attitude towards helping people was replaced with sarcasm, cynicism, and a nasty drinking problem. This sarcasm and negative outlook on life, along with her blunt manner of speaking, often deadpan tone, and distant nature may make her seem completely unapproachable. Lately, she's been making an effort to curb those negative traits in order to better connect with the community she's now sworn to protect. Her habit of hitting the bottle, however, has only gotten increasingly worse.

Her views on justice have become more harsh as she is forced to confront the worst of humanity more frequently than she did while working in the Sheriff's Office. She's of the opinion that Muldraugh is a lot more like the Wild West than a civilized town and that the laws should reflect that.

KNOX COUNTY CASE FILES:
Case 300720151600 [solved]
Suspect(s): Axel
Victim(s): Guppy
Witness(es): Sarah Fitzgerald, Roxie Grey
Time of Incident: 26JUL20150600
Location: Trailer Park Adjacent to New Haven
Charge(s): Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Battery, Attempted Murder

Statement by Witness:

I was scavenging some old houses one day when I found a bloody journal on a dead bloke. The journal said to deliver it to Haven, so after a bit of running around I found the place. I gave Axle the notebook but I misstepped and I guess I insulted his pride.

Anyhow, I come back later looking to sell some key pads. And of course I don't sell cheap. So he leads me upstairs into a room and pulls a gun on me, accuses me of stealing the lockpads and demands I hand them over. Luckily I was able to talk him down, and we ended it peacefully.
Then the other day I was looking for nails. Axle responds to my broadcast and says to meet him at New Haven after curfew. I get there early so I decide to scrounge around the trailers for some supplies, which is when I realize I'm being followed - or at least I thought I was.
I got the jump on my stalker, but it was just Roxie doing the same thing I was doing. Somehow, and this is where it gets weird, one thing led to another and we end up going at it.

[Just to clarify, when you say going at it, do you mean it?]
Yes, . It got [pause] intense but then Axle comes busting in with his shotgun and catches me quite literally with my pants down and threatens to shoot me. He makes me drop my gun and leads me outside. Apparently he had a thing for Roxie and that was when he snapped. He unloaded several rounds of buckshot, luckily most of it missed but he got me here and here [the witness first motions to his inner thigh and then to his head].
He ended up chasing me up to the old town hall, where I just happened to run into Sarah. He scampered off, and she patched me up.

[Who scampered off?]
Axle. When he saw Sarah, he backed off. I guess he thought I was already too far gone to be saved. That or he didn't want to entangle with someone who could actually defend themselves.

[How have your encounters with Axle been since then?]
No, I've kept my distance but there's been weird things happening at my home lately. Doors will be opened when I get back, stuff is moved. I think he's trying to finish the job.

[Have you seen him on the premises?]
No, I haven't. But I'm often away on business. The weird part is nothing has been stolen. If it was just a common looter, they would've wiped me clean.

[When Axle encountered you and Roxie, do you remember what he said to either of you?]
Most if it, yes. He said something along the lines of that I was a slime ball and that he'd figured he'd find me doing something like this. Then he pulled me outside and blamed me for all his problems. Told me it was my fault that Haven burned down even though I never had anything to do with him but selling him some damn locks.
He tried to justify shooting me in the head, saying that I was trying to force myself on Roxie even after she told him otherwise.

[Did he physically pull you out of the building?]
He led me at gunpoint.

[Why does he think you insulted his pride?]
Well, apparently him and his now deceased buddy had a falling out just before he went off and got himself killed. I don't know what was in that journal, but Axle was pretty upset about it. I have to admit, I wasn't as understanding as I could've been at the time. He said something along the lines of that he felt he could have prevented this to which I replied maybe he could have. I didn't meant to offend him, it just sort of slipped out unconsciously.

[Why do you think he accuse you of stealing locks the second time you met?]
Well, I was playing hardball and I think he was at his wits end. He's not a very patient guy. He was just tired of dealing with me.

[When you say hardball, do you mean negotiating your trade?]
Right. I'd been holding on to those locks for a while waiting for them to appreciate in value. The time was right to sell, but I wasn't about to sell them cheap.

DEAD

Coco Rae
157klkk.jpg
Personality Description
A self confessed workaholic, Coco was passionate about work and believed in pulling her weight - had always been like that, especially since she and her (most likely dead) best friend set up their own boutiques across Illinois. Years later their range was expanding into Kentucky: Coco had become devoted to her business which was mainly successful due to her excellent haggling skills. Although she couldn't be a normally operating businesswoman after the outbreak, Coco found other ways to make herself useful, like sewing up people's clothes and making home meals for the group.

Appearance Description
Coco was a small built, brown haired woman with a face of defined features: being thin, her cheekbone was quite evident and her lips, which appeared to have had some kind of work done to them, were in a slight, but permanent, pucker. She always had her hair up in a neat bun, or allowed it to curl over her shoulders; Coco had naturally been the glamorous sort of woman, and did not like to leave her safehouse without just a dab of dark eye-shadow and a smidgen of eyeliner. Coco wore some kind of coloured button up-shirt and a brown skirt with slits in the sides for agility reasons, along with knee-height grey leather boots.

Facts
  • Coco's real name was Caroline Ray, however she stylised it as Coco Rae for her company.
