So i know they are not out yet but as a someone who was raised on a farm one aspect of games that was always goofy was devs not knowing much about animals in general.
Build 42 adds farm animals and it appears it will hold true to the stigma (cows produce meat(beef) and milk(Dairy), goats produce meat and milk, sheep produce meat and wool, chickens produce eggs and meat).
While this is all accurate modern society has shifted to 3 types due to population constraints in needing more.
1. Meat animals: Angus cattle (black), boer goats (brown heads), suffolk sheep (white), cornish cross chickens (white)
2. Utility/byproduct animals: Holstien cattle for milk (black and white), Alpine Goat for milk(brown flecked with black and white), Merino sheep for wool (white), rhode island red chickens for eggs (redish)
The purpose of these animals came out of growing population and feed more people with less farmers with each animal yielding more of what they specialized in.
3. Dual purpose animals are one that are more suited for self sustaining farms and are more antiquated now you do not have to look far to find them and most are called heritage breeds they don't produce as much meat or utility item as the specialized animals would but are more efficient for a smaller population that want variety without large amounts of waste. Shorthorn Cattle known for their roan colors traditionally red and white, barred rock or buff orpington chickens are some of the dual purpose animals I am familiar with because I raise them.
I think this comes very relevant to zomboid as it is almost a pioneering game where the forced shift from a base with dual purpose animals for self sustaining to a multiplayer or ai bolstered base would need more specialized food source.
Also adding other cuts of meat such as brisket or ribs and scaling butchering with cooking skill to where you get less with lower skill.
