This happen to me on skyrim and dragon age i fixed it by turning off Anti-aliasing EDIT - I see why its not working if i set my settings to this It Crashes the game. If i change it back to Use Application setting makes it will not crash.

Getting Windows 8 64 bit. ATI 5850. Crashes before i can start a new game, changes game res, changing any graphic setting, and just at even crashes on main menu screen. - EDIT using JAVA 7 update 21 64 bit version and 32 bit version installed.
