There's a problem with sounds endlessly looping in the current MP build. I'm pretty sure the problem with cooking comes from certain food items playing a sound while being cooked. The game plays the short sound clip repeatedly until cooking is finished, but because all the sound files are looping, it is creating a new looping instance of that sound continually until the game can't handle it anymore. You can hear the sounds overlap more and more as the game starts to slow down. You can still cook, but you can only cook things that don't play a sound while cooking. You can cook a steak in the oven for instance with no issues. The problem is known and being worked on, so until that's resolved you'll just have to play around it.
