Mods in multiplayer aren't currently supported in part because much of the stuff that many mods do, such as new items, construction or additional scripting functionality etc, just isn't currently handled in multiplayer code. This can lead to other players having items or seeing stuff in the world that others don't, or just the clients or server or both getting messed up or crashing.
