Unamelable
It's pretty weird but I've always had problems with creating a server "to play with two people". And most of the time I have to start a dedicated server with port opening because people can't log in via steam invite. It's 2023 and we still have to use hamachi/radmin VPN to play together on a local server. I'm sure it won't be a problem to make a P2P system that will work in Project Zomboid. It would obviously reduce the headaches of playing in a small group
EnigmaGrey
I'm guessing it'd still be a port issue, if that's the case? If the game fails to open the ports due to a lack of UPnP support or issues with the router, you could open it manually? It's just 16261 as UDP. Though some internet providers will provide routers that also give you access to port forwarding, they often have their own separate administrative account on said router that over-rules your settings. If you can't host directly because you're behind a CGNAT, you're stuck using a VPN. Likewise, if the ISP decides to throttle or block traffic on PZ's port, you'll have to use a VPN to avoid packet sniffing on their part. There's not really much we can do in this case.
