Why the 1990s?

Could a developer here (or someone who can quote a developer) tell me why exactly the game takes place in the 1990s (1993 to be exact) as opposed to the 2000s/current day?

Also I'd like to know if the game is going to progress into the 2000s like at least 7 years after the apocalypse canon wise.

Whole premise doesn’t really work once cell phones and the world-wide-web kick off.

Okay so, will the game progress into the 2000s canon wise or somehow wise after the apocalypse?

Like a 7+ years later type deal?

Honestly I personally Like that it is back in time. Cause if it was in the present day there would be too many things to use to keep us alive or just help with inconvenience 1990s was the Era Before Computers/AI Became The Main Advancement.
Also 1990s has enough tech to survive comfortably. But if we had stuff like we had today it would just be a tad boring. Not to mention the Military Advancements.
My main thinking on it is the 1990s is right before History started to advance like crazy so its a perfect place to throw a Zombie Apocalypse in to see how the tech of those days would handle such a thing. Just be glad it wasn't set to 1812 cause we would be shooting zombies with muzzle loaders and pitchforks  XD.
Great Question Though!

Maybe in a sequel? How else would it really be represented in game except for just got the game world you're currently playing evolves, especially once NPCs are implemented. It also depends on how widespread the effects are. If it's world wide, there probably aren't new models of cars being made, major tech advances beyond what would directly help in a post apocalyptical world.

The game as it is now can play out to the 2000s, on the calendar. But as society has collapsed globally, the significance of this is moot.

With NPCs, the 2000s just means you've had years for the NPCs to develop into whatever stage of societal redevelopment the devs have them aim for. But this means rebuilding technology (figuratively) from year 0; so the 2000s you'll get are not the 2000s you might be looking for with this post. Horses, radios and farms as opposed to cars, cell phones and industry.

Are you hoping to see anything in particular in the 2000s?

PS the devs have said a number of times that PZ is meant to evoke the expectations of Romero's zombie lore. If you watch some Romero movies you'll understand why they've set the timeline the way it is. Eg: https://projectzomboid.com/blog/news/2017/07/thank-you-george-romero/
