I would like to suggest a fix. Everyone knows that a zombie does not calm down until it breaks an obstacle, a door or a window, for example, even if it has not seen or heard the player for a long time. What if you make the zombie gradually stop breaking the interior, if there are no motives to do it, that is, there are no sounds that provoke it and there is no player whom he must see for motivation. If not motivated, he will slow down the attack and then just watch, then wander around.
