Game unpauses after clicking "OK" for disabling guide on startup

I know this sounds like a silly thing, but I had paused the game to read the guide, and unchecked the "show on startup" box. This creates a little popup telling players that they can press F1 to open it again, but when you press "OK", the game will unpause. I didn't notice this and left the game running unpaused while I walked away and I died

 

I do like the popup telling people about the hotkey, but is there a way you can have it NOT unpause the game? The popup itself doesn't even pause the game if it's already playing when you trigger it, so IDK why it would do this.
