ac30fspad35
There's at least four ways of preserving food. refrigeration:it will last for sometime in the apocalypse but not for long salt: its a good method for meats but not for fruits zip bags:can be used for meats and fruits but not very effective. vac bags: very effective but needs electricity unless if you can redneck by attaching a vacuum machine and duct tape to a bag but you would still need electricity rednecks with tophats. AirborneM4
Don't forget about pickling, canning and dehydrating. Overall i'd like to see some sort of preservation methods after the power dies. Walther

Myth
That's what a vacuum sealer is. It's a vacuum motor in a pretty housing to market it to suburban housewives. It would take 20 minutes and materials already ixisting in game to alter the vacuum cleaner housing to function as a sealer. Then you could use a curling iron or something of the like to seal the bag.Don't forget about pickling, canning and dehydrating. Overall i'd like to see some sort of preservation methods after the power dies. You can hang and smoke meats to preserve them. Create a table with a reflective surface(like aluminum foil or sheet metal) to use for dehydrating meats and fruits. Fill a laundry tote with sand and store it in a cool, dry place (for now, a ground floor room with no windows until we get basements) and preserve veggies in the sand(works especially well for root and tuber veg). Canning just requires the materials(which are found on store shelves in Walmart even). Each of these things requires no electricity, and only two even require the survivor provide a heat source. The dehydration table relies on the sun. AirborneM4
Dryke
During the winter months it might be worth considering that temperature cold enough to freeze a human body is also cold enough to freeze food. In fact, during a prolonged period of coldness it would not be unlikely that you could effectively 'refrigerate' things by just keeping them in a box outdoors. To that extent letting the weather have an impact on more than just your body temperature is really the gist of my suggestion. A more involved idea might be the construction of some type of pre-industrial 'cold cellar'. This could be as low tech as a simple 'hole in the ground' type of room (that would be at its most effective in the winter months) to ultimately something as advanced as a structure built to be filled with ice and snow that would work as a low-tech 'freezer'.
