There is the big "This is an Alpha" disclaimer. You are in an huge test bed seeing what breaks and what does not. You know it is an alpha going in, this is not something that blindsides you. I talked with a bud about the game and he was not in for it at all. After getting burned by Firefall, he is not putting a dime into another beta (besides closed beta, pre-release... ie early access). That's cool. I like the feel of the game and would rather be testing something this neat, than playing LOTRO or SWTOR, or some such. If you toss you coin into the well and wish to be a part of what looks to be a great game... do it. If not, dont. Don't toss your coin into the well and then complain about the lack of water.
