You could have the op tion of leaving longs items like a rifle, umbrella or even a broom leaning against a wall like the image below.

And if they add a height variable, you'll be able to make items appear like they're on different shelves of a multi shelf tile, or stackable on top of each other, as some others have already suggested.

 

My only issue with item placement is the amount of time I can sometimes spend doing it. Weekdays are for weed and whiskey in my books, but buy howdy does it kick my OCD into gear. I could spend, literally, a full 24 in game hours decorating.
