Game not starting

I have been playing zomboid for about a year now and as recently as 1 week ago. I tried to boot it up today through steam and it won't launch. I get as far as it asking to "Launch Project Zomboid" or "Compatibility Mode". I have selected both, it looks like it is working and then it just stops but steam shows that the program is running.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times. made sure to remove any mods. updated my drivers.

Other forums have said you may need more information. See below. It does mention an error with Java but I am not adept at troubleshooting these issues.

please help!

Have you tried restarting your PC and restarting your Steam client? It might be that the steam client itself has issues launching the game, doing the restart should fix that issue. If that doesnt help can you share the console.txt file again?

Tried doing both and came up with the same issue again.

In that case can you try going to your game folder "Steam\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid" and launch the game using the "ProjectZomboid32.bat" file? Not the .exe but the bat file which should be below it and doesn't have the PZ icon.

So I was able to boot the game through this method this morning. I thought everything was resolved but then I just tried to do it again now and it failed. I'm not sure what changed since this morning. I restarted my pc and tried again (both 32.bat and 64.bat versions) with the same result.

Could you share the "logs.zip" file as well, it is found in the Zomboid folder together with the console.txt? It would contain the log of the game that worked, since it saves the last 5 logs.
Additionally, can you share the "hs_err_pid" file found in your main Zomboid folder in "Steam\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid"

So I think I figured what changed  from when it worked yesterday morning and not last night when I wrote back. I use an MSI Laptop and typically have the laptop connected via docking station/hub to my monitor and other hardware (mouse/keyboard etc.). When I successfully booted the game in the morning it was NOT connected to the monitor via hub. When it failed last night it was connected to the monitor via hub. I tested this and unplugged the laptop from the hub and it worked!

Is it possible it is a monitor setting issue?

Here is the hr_ess_pid file referenced  from the failed boot : https://pastebin.com/embed_js/i862ex9g

log.zip attached.

If needed here is the console.txt file after the successful launch last night:  https://pastebin.com/embed_js/mybRGxXT

logs.zip

Looks like it’s falling when it tries to get the display settings. The driver might be returning incorrect information. Maybe the hub has its own display driver or interferes with edid (settings in firmware for the monitor) somehow? Either way, the game is getting an invalid location in memory from it.

Not sure what you can do about that aside from ensuring that you have the latest drivers for the hub and monitor. (Aside from not use the hub, ofc.)

Is it a thunderbolt hub by Belkin by chance? I’ve got a cranky one myself. It requires its own set of display drivers to function properly.

Thanks! i'll take a look at the drivers for both. It's a thunderbolt hub by Kensington. Had no issues playing PZ with it before so what you mentioned regarding the hub/monitor drivers makes sense. Will update!
