Log wall recipe

Remove rope and twine from the log wall recipe. Nobody in their right mind would ever want to used those for log walls.

(Yes this is a rage post.  Yes, I just lost every single of my 12 ropes because I didn't realize I was out of ripped sheets...)

TBH;  only ropes should be able to be used to build log walls.

Can you imagine the weight of multiple 8ft logs being held together by some strips of ripped cloth or twine? Its just not realistic.

However, gameplay sometimes has to beat realism. There just aren’t enough ropes spawning in game to make building log walls a plausible thing to do; which is likely why you’re upset. Ropes aren’t very common to find.

I think ideally removing the ability to use ripped sheets and twine to build log walls while increasing the spawn rate of rope would be the way to go.

I mean that's really just your fault isn't it?

If our character started drinking bleach every time he ran out of water, that would also be our fault for carrying bleach when out of water... That wouldn't be any less retarded for it to happen in the first place though.

I agree for twine.  But I'd expect braided cloth strip to be resistant enough. Tried to look up the tensile strength of fabric. All I've found is  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_tensile_strength.  It shows nylon has tensile properties similar to steel.  But to be honest, I don't understand the subject well enough to draw valid conclusions from the numbers shown. And, I'd expect clothing in the game to be more cotton/polyester based than nylon which are missing from the table, but according to google, would be about half nylon's for cotton, and a quarter of nylon's for polyester.  Then again, not exactly sure what to make of those numbers.

“Retarded” is offensive. Be lovely.

Maybe braiding ripped sheets into rope is a solution. “Solves” the realism issue (at least makes it better) and the rope shortage issues.

Could be a tailoring skill.

well... English is my 3rd language... So w/e is offensive in English in your specific area of the world... Sorry.  But well, it's 2021.  Everybody is offended by everything.  So I kindda stopped caring. But feel free to replace "Retarded" by dumb, stupid, imbecile, moronic or any other synonym of your choosing that you feel is not offensive.

This as an argument, a bit ironically, just does not make sense.

Ropes are used in the recipe to make log walls. Drinking bleach is not a solution for thirst. Yes its a liquid, but you’re making quite a reach.

Now if you you told your character to drink and they were out of potable water and they decided to drink non-potable water then maybe that could be a better argument.

Your character only automatically drinks when they have potable water.

Log walls aren’t made automatically. They are placed each time you tell your character to make one and only one. Your character checks their inventory each time to see if they have the necessary ingredients to meet the recipe. If yes, they build one log wall.

Perhaps when choosing to build log walls you could have a context menu choosing which recipe they’ll use? Kinda like how cooking works with different ingredients for a recipe.

Actually, that's an example of a totally nonsensical action the character could take that can be controlled by the player but is a micromanaging hell to do. But yeah, wouldn't be the first time I make connections where people sees none... I pretty much earn a living that way.

But just like there is no reason for a character to drink bleach to quench thirst, there is no reason why a character would use a very rare and limited resource instead of a incredibly common and infinite one (infinite at least when respawn is on) to build a log wall.

But so far, you've been pretty dedicated at opposing my suggestion solely for the sake of opposing it.  You have yet to give me a single reason why the game is a better game for having log walls that can consume ropes. Because that is what the discussion should be about.

Whether or not the "rope recipe" is removed from the game, I probably will never burn ropes that way again...  I'll just jump through a bunch of annoying, boring, irritating and time consuming hoops to work around that "issue".  That's a lot of efforts to prevent a character to do something that I (and probably nearly everybody else) never want to do.

I am not dedicated to being against your idea. I gave two suggestions to go along with the idea to improve on ropes being used for log walls. Ropes are a rare resource and likely wouldn’t be a players first choice (in Project Zomboid) to build a log wall. But if there were actual IRL zombies that I wanted to keep out and I had three choices of ripped sheets (likely cotton), twine, and ropes to hold a wall of logs together; I would absolutely use rope.

I suggested braiding ripped sheets into ropes. This would solve the scarcity issue of rope. It could be a skill for tailoring. Use the nearly endless ripped sheets to make useful ropes. Sort of like how you can saw the nearly endless logs to make planks for carpentry.

I also suggested a context menu when choosing to build a log wall so the player could choose which recipe to use. Just like you have for cooking or for example when starting a fire.

You are right that a player wouldn’t choose a rope instead of ripped sheets with how Project Zomboid currently is. However, I disagree that we shouldn’t be using ropes to build log walls.

The realism of holding hundreds if not thousands of (pick your measurement of weight) together with some ripped tshirts is just unrealistic.

what are ropes used for that make them so valuable that it really matters if you use them for a log wall by accident ?
I am playing this game for almost 600 hrs now and I ever really used ropes once to build a light pillar.

is there anything super smart thing we can do with rope that I am simply not aware of ?

Nothing that I recall, unless the stacked log recipe only uses rope.

I don’t get what the hangup is.

Being able to carry 12 logs without being overburdened is definitely a nice perk.  It speeds up construction so much that I actually awaited to have enough ropes to start construction.

Not sure if I'll continue working on fortification now that I "burned" my ropes or if I'll wait until I get a few more. Losing my ropes pissed me off so much I haven't played since then.

So, you will stop using it or you will lose you forum privileges.

It’s not up to everyone else to make up for your lapse once you’re informed of it, regardless of whether it’s your third language or not.

i had a chat with beard and tought the people here were cool. Pretty dissapointed now.
