On the Road

roadblock.jpg

Let’s start off with a wave in the general direction of IWBUMS public test version update 41.45 – that released today, and which is now live on the usual Steam beta channel.

The changelist lives here. Highlights run as follows:

  • Turbo’s awesome new fog and mist visuals.
  • New player character names taken from 1994 US census.
  • New bags: cooler, satchel, briefcase, gun cases.
  • Quicker shoving/stomping after attacks.
  • Improvements to fitness system (now found on Health Panel)
  • Polish to: sneaking, toilet paper, sleeping systems and seated anims.
  • Loads of other stuff.

MP STRIKE FORCE

Now over to the MP coding furnace.

Andrei has been concentrating on syncing animations and player states for PVP this week. Anyone who has tried PVP in build 40 will probably be aware at how janky and undeveloped the PVP system is in terms of character reactions to attacks.

Things are looking a lot cooler now, as you can see below. Currently we’re using the zombie hit reaction when struck with a bullet, albeit adjusted for a human. It looks fine – but please bear in mind that we will put some extra work in for human-specific ‘getting shot’ animations in Builds 41+.

(Also ignore how the character does a shove after being struck – that’s another hanger-on from the zeds)

Yuri, meanwhile, has been bugfixing around the multiplayer codebase: optimizing the frequency of player packets to further reduce net traffic, fixing some bugs introduced when merging in the fitness code, some fixes to the PVP damage system and various other things.

Most excitingly, this week he also uttered the words: “We are getting closer to internal testing of the synchronization of zombies and players’ characters.”

This a big milestone for us, the first internal test of the multiplayer within the wider team is a very exciting prospect, BUT!

This does not mean that a public release is imminent yet. The constituent parts of the machine have now almost been put together, but we are yet to see or feel the whole thing running. We haven’t seen the bugs, we haven’t seen the issues, we haven’t had the crashes etc etc.

What this should give you though, hopefully, is that one of the main stepping-stones toward a wider public release is fast approaching.

There will likely be plenty to do and fix after the internal test of the MP systems, as a whole the multiplayer experience will likely still be broken and incomplete during these tests, but after such a long long road and such a mountain to climb in terms of completely redeveloping the multiplayer systems it’s great to be at this point.

The videos coming out of it have been very exciting and we’re looking forward to everything that comes next.

(Also: shooting each other, raiding each other’s bases and leaving our friends behind as food for zombies.)

This week’s roadblock from Foster_Toaster:3. A changelist of all IWBUMS patches since the 41 beta was released can be found here. A general list of stuff added to PZ, and vids of features being worked on, is kept here – so you don’t have to plough through endless dev blogs for info. The Centralized Block of Italicised Text would like to direct your attention to the PZ Wiki should you feel like editing or amending something, and the PZ Mailing List that can send you update notifications once builds get released. We also live on Twitter right hereOur Discord is open for chat and hijinks too!
