Chained_Phoenix
Would it be possible to build in some sort of really basic "community" you have to support? Even if the NPCs aren't even animated, it's just all maths and them standing still. What I'm talking about - You set an area as your "community" and based on the size with-in the walls that's how many people can "live" there. You have to drop off constant food to a box so they can "eat" (just make it disappear), if zombies get in everyone dies, the group make a constant low level of noise so you always have zombies in the immediate area brought towards it so have to defend it and clear the area around it. Would just add an extra late game element you could do. Even if the "survivors" were objects you could move around the like dogs in Hydrocraft. They could have random events which need medical supplies, drink a certain amount of your water each day, basic stuff like that.
OffitMan
I like some of the ideas above but to me, it hardly seems worth it at this point to take manpower away from the actual NPC development to make a crude version described above, just for it to be ripped out again once NPCs are ready. trombonaught
nasKo
Imagine NPCs being the thing that people have to wait for for the better part of the decade and then we go and release some static papercuts that magically consume your stuff. That'd be such a letdown and we'd rightfully be ripped to shreds for it. Good for a mod, not for vanilla. trombonaught, KouhaiSan and Faalagorn 2
