Pills addiction and overdosing.

Currently, you can eat a whole pack of pills without any problems, but IMO it's not realistic as it must be, so I decided to suggest two things — Addiction and Overdosing.

Addiction will appear if you've consumed something like Painkillers or sleeping pills. Depending on what you've consumed, you will have different addiction. I.e — if you was eating sleeping pills for a weeks in order to sleep, your character, eventually, won't be able to sleep without taking any sleeping pill (unless character ridiculously tired). Painkillers addiction will have different effect. If you addict to painkillers, your character will feel pain and be stressed if not consuming any painkillers.

If you want to heal addiction, you will need toto NOT take the pills for a few weeks. If you become addict after healing again, healing addiction will be harder.

Overdose will appear after taking too much pills in one moment. Overdose will cause drunkenness, a bit stress and (?) Hallucinations (?). Overdose, most likely, willyou lead to addiction. If you have consumed a lot of pills at once (3 packs), character will pass out and die if no one use (?) Adrenalin (?) On him/her (pulp fiction anyone?)

Well, this is all I wanted to say.

Bye!

Overdosing is easier to mod in than addiction.  You'd only need to set a var for each drug.  Then you can increment it when you take drugs and decrement it every cycle.  Once you reach thresholds, existing moodles combined with direct health damage can imitate an overdose.

Addiction on the other hand needs a lot more going on to feel good.  Cravings, long term changes to player health, etc.

Perhaps there should be different types of painkillers in Project Zomboid:

  • Low level painkillers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) would be extremely easy to find (homes, shops, and vehicle gloveboxes) and entirely non-addictive. Unfortunately, they would only be useful when dealing with low-level pain such as shallow cuts and scratches. Maybe your character could get random headaches (or hangovers) in the future that would also be treated with these painkillers.

  • Opioids such as codeine and oxycodone would be the next step-up in terms of painkiller strength. These pills would be used for treating severe pain such as that associated with deeper cuts and fractures (though they'd still be ineffective against agonizing pain). They'd also be significantly harder to find than over-the-counter drugs - mostly found in clinics, pharmacies, and rarely in homes. Opioids would have the potential to be addictive - especially if taken regularly over a long period of time. Using opioids would also result in a small penalty to accuracy and coordination.

  • Morphine would be used for treating the most agonizing wounds. Found only in hospitals (and maybe ambulances), morphine would need to be injected into the injured party using a syringe. Morphine would quickly neutralize any and all pain, but with heavy side-effects similar to those of being severely drunk - including sudden extreme tiredness and a loss of coordination and accuracy. It goes without saying that morphine usage would be extremely addictive.
