GOG purchase, now saying steam required

I updated my game this morning through GOG, after playing the vehicles build fine last night. Its now throwing the message "Steam must be running to play this game (SteamAPI_init) failed". Obviously I dont have steam and the game was purchased on GOG. Game version is 39.67.5

Any ideas?

Apparently an extra file called ProjectZomboid64.site.json was included by mistake.  Delete that and the game should run normally.

had the same problem

restarted everything - game, Steam, GOG Galaxy, the entire computer, tried running everything as administrator, even got frustrated and deleted the entire game folder and and then re-installed it - Nothing.

 

THEN I tried running the .bat file (ProjectZomboid32/64.bat)

that seems to work so far
