The game as it is now is $15. I would really suggest using that as it gives you access to beta versions, constant updates and fixes and so forth. Many servers will also require a steam connection for you to connect as well. Playing with a non-steam version, you are playing with half a game and I can say, I never did get mods to work on a non-steam version. I attempted and searched all around for a fix on it for someone else before. That $15 is more than a base game... its also all the mods and it saves you a HUGE amount of headaches down the road.

From a technical standpoint, it is the steam version, just pirated. Probably using steamemu to bypass loading of the steam dll files (same with the other thread linked to above). I run a non-steam version (legit) and mods work just fine, no access to the workshop or beta branches. But thats worth it IMO, I'm not a fan of DRM, Valve tracking my gaming usage, or their half assed troll infested social network attempt. I do appreciate Valve's contributions to the linux community and the Debian development team, but not enough to give them my money. I'd rather it go to GOG.

I personally use steam for no other reason that I have for a long time. I like all my games able to be downloaded on the fly and listed in a single location. I don't care about them tracking my game played usage personally or what they do with it. I pay literally no attention to the social media aspect unless its posting reviews on indie games, of which I will never look at again or I happen across a post while googling an issue with some game and a link brings me there. I also love the addition of mods. If for no other reason, that would be a main reason for me to play it on steam. I like the game, but its unfinished. Mods help add to the game. I did the same thing with Fallout. After beating the game I modded the game because it breaths new life to the game. If not for mods, I would have quite PZ some time ago because vanilla has just always left me wanting more from it. Now of course GOG version allows mods but its a bit more of a process than searching the workshop and subscribing. I am lazy. Steam panders to my laziness in this way.

Of course, i am not judging anyone who sees the game different or steam different than me. To each their own. For me though, Steam is just much more convenient than the alternatives.

As for mods with a non-steam version, I mean just that, a ripped version, not a GOG version. I suppose saying "non-legit versions" would have been more accurate.

Ya I have to admit I'm kinda a privacy nut..the tracking erks me. I also don't use FB, use duckduckgo as my search engine, and go to great lengths to block ad servers and other trackers (well beyond running a simple adblocker). That kind of personal data is digital gold for companies, they make soooo much money off it, it amazes how people give it away now days since I grew up in a era when privacy was actually a thing.  Personally I wouldn't trade one of the most valuable items in today's society just for convenience, maybe if I actually felt I was getting something of equal value in return I might be more willing to cough up my data.

The Fallout series...wonderful stuff, and so much better with mods! The modding process for FO (as well as the elder scrolls series, since the base is the same) is a real PITA however (especially making mods compatible with each other). And of course your right, finding PZ mods outside of the workshop is much more of a process, and your options are limited. For me thats not so much of a problem since its all lua, a language I'm especially fond of, and I love to code.

But not everyone is me..I'm a cynical bastard I can admit it, and again your right: To each their own. Its not my place to judge what people do with their own data, only what they do with mine.

I try to limit my available data as well. Like, ad blockers, Logless VPN connection for most everything, cookies disabled.... the usual. But there are certain things, like with the steam tracking, and i like how you put it " if I actually felt I was getting something of equal value", to me, the ease of use makes the tracking of what games I am playing and when I am playing them a decent enough trade off. I use social media but mostly because I was in the Army and social media is the easiest way to keep in touch with people. So there is a measure of data that is given up with that which again I look at as an equal trade off. They get some data, I am able to keep in touch with people I would otherwise loose touch with. I totally get your mentality though.... even if the ads on our forums help pay the bills. lol.
