Infrequent Crashes resulting in cell reset

Question

I'm playing vehicles branch with Hydrocraft, DL Canned Fix, Faster Reading ++, Loot Zeta V1.3, Organized Storage, Passive Skills Fix, Pump Power Updated (fixed), Realistic Weapon Durabilities, Zombie Cure Medical Cocktail, and Blindcoders utility functions. In the past (on all these mods and more, vehicles, on SP / First Days Normal) I've had rare crashes, but the world was saves and I could restart just fine. Now that I'm on some harder custom sandbox settings, with fewer mods, I'm getting these game breaking crashes that reset cells completely erasing zombies, bodies, dropped items, and even switching survivor houses to regular houses. I've been trying a large number of different combinations of mods to see if I can get rid of this error, my next try is going to be without any mods to see if that is the cause. I also have done a clean install of the game with no luck. I've disabled steam overlay, no luck. The stack trace is below, any recommendations would be very much appreciated as I'm really loving this game and very confused as to what has gone wrong when it was working before. Thanks!

i am having this same issue with HydroCarft with PowerPump on the Vehicles Branch. It seems like any time i melee a zombie i get a 10% chance that the zombies on the screen will walk in place then disappear. I have users having the same issue. Its completely random. Sometimes its 2 hours sometimes 2 minutes over and over. I have lost many fully loaded cars to this issue. Its frustrating as alot of building and such get reverted back.

 

Sometimes on the server i dont even see an error. It just stops responding.

Haven't been able to wrap my head around this yet. After the character I was playing on (with only Hydrocraft + Vehicles 34.1 + Pump Power (fixed)) was working fine, none of the mysterious crashes, every character I've played with has had these crashes. I haven't been able to reproduce the crash on the vanilla vehicles branch. Next step is to switch back to the main branch I guess and see what's going on there. Only other thing I can think of is something else is interfering with Zomboid on my computer - are there any know interactions with spyware/antivirus software? I've also edited the batch file to give PZ up to 8 GB of memory, it only usually uses 3-4 gb.

 

The crashes do consistently happen when I'm engaged fighting zombies, so perhaps there is some fault with how hydrocraft is changing the zombie loot spawns?

I have not seen, on any branch, issues with Hydro causing a crash with zombies myself. LootZeta however I had issues with in the past.  I would personally look there as it directly handles the loot in zombies. Perhaps that was looking for something in HC that no longer exists or.... something. However, to me at least, that seems like a likely culprit since you other plays with HC installed and NOT LZ installed produced no crashing.

Are those mods all actively updated? Some might not be working right on the vehicles build. How reproducable are the crashes? What happens or occurs before them? You say you have been trying different mod combinations, but has this been on existing saves once the crashing problem starts or on new ones?

 

Verifying that crashes do not occur on a completely unmodded setup also sounds like a good idea, just to be sure before you spend more time trying to narrow down what mods it is.

This is happening on RedBoid, but only with hydrocraft installed.

 

The common cause seems to be attacking nonexistent zombies; Zombies that only exist on the game client, not on the server. A message about non-existent zombies is displayed in the console when you hit them.

Try commenting out

Events.OnWeaponHitCharacter.Add(BoltsArrows.arrowBoltHit); in HCExtra.lua

 

You may also find out that commenting out this line helps with loading map data on a server; in HCObjectsLoading.lua

 

Events.LoadGridsquare.Add(HCObjects.OnLoadGridSquare);

 

I'd be interested to see if that has any effect.

The crashes  usually occur ~45 min or so into game  while I am attacking a zombie, I think it may be an error in dead zombie inventory generation. I've tried disabling my mods that directly modify zombie inventory generation without an increase in stability. Will report back after I try with no mods and if stable I'll start adding them in one at a time. I've been having crashes like this since before the 23rd hydrocraft update.

Possible that Hydrocraft is trying to add the undefined HCCiggaretteButt object to the zombie's inventory . . . and the irrigation mod just incorporated is constantly searching for a pipe and rain barrel any time the right mouse button is depressed.

Good point, I didn't start having this problem until I started playing with smoker characters, will try a run without smoking.

I found and fixed the hydrocraft bug causing it to fail to add the cigarette butt to inventory after smoking a cigarette, hydro is aware. It wasn't causing the crashes I don't think since I can't get the game to crash on smoking. The quest continues!

With the new vehicles branch 34.1 and hydrocraft alone, after my cigarette fix, I've not had any more of these crashes. This weekend I'll see if I can't reproduce the crashes and if I find out which mod was causing the problem I will post it up, thanks for the help everybody!
