Why do gifs/pictures have a maximum size?

Generally for memory/load times.  The server not only has to store everyone's profile pictures, but it also has to load that picture and send it to everyone who looks at it.

Worth noting, I don't think you can use an animated .gif for your picture, only the first frame gets sent out.

I've seen people with animated .gif avatars on here.

@Queen Glory Find some site that can optimize your gif, possibly resize it to 150x150 (I don't think a bigger version can ever be seen on the forum) if it isn't a full scene from a movie gifs can get pretty small.

The size/limitations are so that

a) loading threads where you've posted don't take forever for those on slow connections,

b) so that posts aren't oversized by your avatar where you've posted, and

c) because too many too big avatars are really really annoying.. and I get to configure the limits :P
