Workshop Maps not loading

Wiizzy

Question

Hey all,

I've recently changed laptop, and re-downloaded PZ (which I must say has been made very easy, including the workshop downloads).

Everything seems fine, the game boots (33.20 [steam]). All mods are showing in the Mods section of the main menu.

I can start a new game, spawn into any of the maps (excluding south muld that just throws up an error and closes the game).

I have successfully spawned in New denver, Walking dead prison and in Drayton.

The problem is, it seems, only the base game map and the spawn map load in.

For example, If I spawn in New Denver and travel to the Walking dead prison, the prison will not be loaded, similarly, if I spawn in the Walking dead prison, and travel to New Denver, ND will not be loaded.

No idea why this is happening, Hopefully I'm doing something wrong...

Any help is greatly appreciated as I want to play the game with all the community maps installed.

Thanks

Ignore the Steam overlay part and grab the error:

Go to the installation directory of the game by right clicking on Project Zomboid and selecting Properties in the Steam game library then press the Browse Local Files button shown here: http://i.imgur.com/PFy0kmJ.png

While you have these options open, disable the Steam overlay in the General tab.

Find the ProjectZomboid32.bat file (blue gears for an icon, not a red and black egg) and double click it. Once (if) the game crashes, take a screenshot of the console and upload it to imgur.com, linking it here. This will hopefully tell us what's wrong. =)

Thanks for the reply EG,

Done exactly as you asked, although no errors were in the console.

I started a new game, (tried phoenix this time), as stated no errors, but no graphics loaded.

I had my HUD, but other than that the map was black, but objects still existed (as right clicking brought up an option to 'smash window').

Here's the console if it helps:

http://imgur.com/m4d16cI

Also, you were not specific on whether starting a new game was what you wanted, or whether to continue with a previous save, and neither did you mention how long to play for, ignoring the fact the map didn't load in.

Also, just to note, the mods I am using are as follows:

Bedford falls

Cheat menu

Convenient bags

Drayton

Hydrocraft

More zombie loot

New Denver

Phoenix

South Muldraugh

The walking dead prison.

I have not tried running the game with different mods activated, so will disable all mods and only enable the map mods to see if anything is conflicting.

Thanks again for the reply

Keep me posted :)

Okay, so I've done some more testing here as I really want these maps to load;

I've tried both on the IWBUMS branch, and the current build - Both with no result...

I've tried disabling all mods and enabling individual maps, spawning in Muldraugh and re-loading to see if the game has loaded any additional buildings, but each time just says 1008 (which I believe is the number of buildings in the base game map)

My steam app is not installed in the default location of C:Program files (could that possible affect where PZ is looking for the maps?)

Again, If I spawn in one of the community maps it will load that map and the base game map but not other maps. ....

Please help me?!

I have considered manually installing all of the maps, but I've avoided doing so as far as the whole point is to have the steam workshop working correctly .

Thankyou in advance

Just another piece of information on this is I can join multiplayer servers with all maps enabled and I have no issues there.

I've also tried copying all of the mods to the zomboid/mods folder which now makes the mods menu on Zomboid show 2 of each mod, one workshop and the zomboid/mods copy. Still does not load the other maps.

I've also tried hosting a steam a server, and from what I've read to enable mods/maps on the steam dedicated server, you must have the mods in the zomboid/mods folder, which also failed to load any of the community maps on the server.

Tried copying all mods to the steamapps/common/Projectzomboid/mods folder, tried copying all maps to steamapps/common/Projectzomboid/media/maps, no luck there.

Verified integrity of cache, 1 fail, still no fix.

In the cmd when loading a save it loads the object file from the map I spawned in from the steamapps/workshop folder, where all the other community maps are too.

I'm running out of things to try... somehow help me please !!!

For a Steam enabled server with multiple mods, set the servertest.ini file like this:

example:

Mods=South Muldraugh;BedfordFalls;The Walking Dead Prison V1.3;NewDenver;Louisiana;Rebuild;Mod_Phoenix

Map=Phoenix;Rebuild;Louisiana;NewDenver;BedfordFalls;TheWalkingDeadPrison;South Muldraugh;Muldraugh, KY

WorkshopItems=498441420;597195227;524301139;522891356;524066677;514427485;532252577;500222958;578141888

The mods will then download and install themselves. Clients will be prompted to subscribe and download the mods on connecting to the server.

There is one caveat: This needs to be done on a new map. If this server has history, you'll have to scrub the old map by deleting its files: go to %UserProfile%\Zomboid\Saves\Multiplayer\ and delete the servertest.ini file.

Thanks Enigma, I'll try this out and see if I get any luck, but note, I am looking to getting the issue fixed for single player too. It seems like when starting a game it's just not looking at the workshop/installed maps at all, only loading objects from the spawn and classic maps.

Thankyou again for the assistance, I'll let you know if this lets me host with all of the maps, hopefully then we may be one step closer to fixing it.

Looks like it cannot find the map files.... It's looking in the media/maps folder.... ?
I only have the challengemaps, Muldraugh, KY & West Point, KY folders here. Are the maps supposed to be here in their separate folders ?

I did try copying the map files here before but deleted again as it didn't fix the issue...

Thanks for the continued support

In singleplayer, each mod is a separate thing, activating multiple map mods does not combine the maps.  This is because the maps may not actually be connected to each other.

If you want to combine multiple maps in singleplayer, you will need to create a new map mod that combines the maps.

I'm confused EP, I watch Nomis plays on Youtube, he usies multiple map mods (New denver, bedford, dreadwood ect) all on single player. I understand some of the maps aren't connected, but maps such as the one's started should be connected. And I was aware that turning on the mod would allow that map to be used when loading a new game.

I should in theory be able to: turn all mod maps on (atleast those that do connect) start a new game and travel between the activated map mods, such as from New Denver to the prison... I'm like 99% sure this is the case, please correct me if I am wrong...

Also I use the PZ map from Blindcoder... And Previously have travelled between multiple community maps for example from Denver to the walking dead prison and to Rebuild.... So I'm confused as to what your reply is stating here....

Yes I know there are some maps that aren't connected to muldraugh and west point, but the maps that are connected, when activated in the mods menu, should combine... correct ?

The way it works is, you choose one map to play on.  Each map has one map folder with a map.info file in it.  The actual map files that are loaded for that map come from that one map folder plus the folders listed next to the lots= line in the map.info file.

For example, here's The Walking Dead Prison's map.info:

title=The Walking Dead Prison
description=Adds the Walking Dead Prison to Muldraugh.
lots=Muldraugh, KY

Your savefile remembers the name of that one map folder.  Activating a bunch of map mods doesn't work the way you want.

Edit - Well my bad, for some reason I assumed you were talking about your own MP server.  You CAN do that and play by yourself with all the maps if you like:

Hey man i can help you with the maps - hit me up on steam: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198065341973/

Basically, once you've subscribed to the maps in the workshop they have all downloaded and can be played in SP but the server cannot access them because it is actually pulling the maps from this folder:

Server: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Project Zomboid Server\media\maps

Client:   C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\ProjectZomboid\media\maps

For whatever reason the maps are not integrated into the multiplayer aspect of the game from the workshop.  Don't quote me, but they won't load if you don't install them to the main folder (the actual PZ folder I showed you).  They download here and have a corresponding number:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\workshop\content\108600

You will go in there an find each folder that contains the actual map data, like this:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\workshop\content\108600\532252577\mods\New Denver, BC\media\maps\NewDenver

So - for New Denver, BC the folder containing the actual map data is called NewDenver.  Your server needs to access THIS - but it is trying to access it from the main folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\ProjectZomboid\media\maps)

Take all of these individual folders and place them where the server is attempting to access (COPY and PASTE, rather).  (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\ProjectZomboid\media\maps) Once you've done that, edit your servertest.ini file.  Here is mine:

Mods=Hydrocraft;AdditionalHairColors;Antize;PumpPower;TheWalkingDeadPrisonV1.3;Bedford Falls;New Denver, BC;Rebuild
Map=TheWalkingDeadPrison;Rebuild;NewDenver;BedfordFalls;Muldraugh, KY

Be sure to list Muldraugh, KY last so that the mods can take precedence.  (The Mods line will contain the name of the folder that contains the map folder, see example above.)

And further down:

WorkshopItems=524066677;532252577;500222958;522891356

Those numbers are the numbers which correspond with each map's workshop ID.  You only need to put the map ID numbers here.  The mods simply need to be listed where I showed you in my example.  You may or may not need to copy any mods you want to this folder:

C:\Users\(your username)\Zomboid\mods

I did it and we are running smoothly so I've left them there - but I didn't have a problem with the mods so I haven't looked into it.  Any questions feel free to hit me up on Steam!  This should help :D  Happy zombie hunting, survivor!

Basically, once you've subscribed to the maps in the workshop they have all downloaded and can be played in SP but the server cannot access them because it is actually pulling the maps from this folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\ProjectZomboid\media\maps

For whatever reason the maps are not integrated into the multiplayer aspect of the game from the workshop.  Don't quote me, but they won't load if you don't install them to the main folder (the actual PZ folder I showed you).

This isn't right.  Unless your server was started with -nosteam, the server will load mods from the folders Steam installed them to.

Well, can I say I fixed it, If it was a problem in the first place.

I successfully got all the maps to load by :

Finding the workshop map files in: Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\108600;

Opening the Games map files here: Steam\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid\media\maps

Back them up !

Next, In the maps folder, alongside Muldraugh, KY, WestPoint, KY and Challenge Maps folders, I created a new folder named for each map mod I have installed: e.g TheWalkingDeadPrison, South Muldraugh, NewDenver

Next, from each map mod, copy all of the lotheader, chunkdata bin files and all of the lotpack files to the Muldraugh, KY folder, overwriting all of conflicts.

The remaining files (description.txt, map.info, objects.lua, spawnpoints.lua & thumb.png)  from each of the mods should be copied into the corresponding folders we created here: Steam\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid\media\maps

The last step is to open the Muldraugh, KY folder, edit the map.info and add each of the maps folders to the lots list, separated by semi colons ;

e.g

lots=West Point, KY;

BedfordFalls;

Downtown(connected);

Louisiana;

NewDenver;

Phoenix;

Rebuild;

South Muldraugh;

TheWalkingDeadPrison

Thanks for the assistant and especially to kg2018 and Nomis who helped me figure this one out, and after about 2/3 months it's nice to see 3400+ buildings loading in!

Thanks again

-TGG

EDIT -

I noticed that the objects files were not loading, so I came up with an Idea to merge all of the separate map mod's objects files into one objects file in the muldraugh folder and that seems to have worked. So merging the objects files with the one in the muldraugh folder then that should allow you to forage in the community maps :)

Of course man!  I'm glad we were able to hook up for a second last night but you pretty much figured it out on your own :D I've been fiddling around in there a ton lately myself.  And EP - I promise this had to happen for Hydrocraft, Antize, and Pump Power to WORK on the server.  They will show up as added, but will not work unless you do that.  I edited my post because I  forgot to mention that the server folder needs the maps, but all clients should have them as well or they can't connect.  Here is what I saw in the console and what I did to get them to work copied from my post on reddit if it helps.  I do not design or make games, nor do I do any coding.   I simply watched the console and went from there.  So, I could be mistaken and it could be something else preventing them from loading, but I have replicated the errors by removing the mod/map files from the folders I placed them in.  Again, I did not place the maps in the /Zomboid mods folder, just mods.  Maps were placed in the server's maps folder.

The maps would not load as spawn options in the server, then the maps were not actually in the game when I simply subscribed. It could not find the objects.lua nor spawn point files. In addition if any player did not have them placed there after subscribing, their console stated the additional maps could not load because they didn't exist and they could not join the server.

I deleted Muldraugh, KY out of the folder and watched the console, and the stock map was added to the list of files it could not access - so I figured that was where they needed to go. I can replicate the error by removing the folders I placed in those different places and attempting to run the server, as I did with the stock Muldraugh, KY folder.

Also, I just installed Pump Power from the workshop over the weekend. I subscribed and added the info to the server's .ini file. I reset Steam when I knew it was loaded. The new mod was listed in the mods on the server, but - I found it was not working. I reset the game, server, and steam and verified the info was entered correctly. I knew I had Hydrocraft and Antize in there and working (C:\Users\name\Zomboid\mods). I then added Pump Power to the mods folder and it worked. It may have worked in singleplayer but it wasn't active on the server.

I should mention that I have walked several people through those exact steps to add the maps in order to access the server. They can subscribe to the mods and the maps, but they have to go through these steps for the maps to load. As you said the mods load just fine for them. However as I said, not the server if not installed in the /Zomboid folder in users.

I saw the server attempting to access a media\maps folder for each new map based on my servertest.ini settings. I also saw that it could not access the objects.lua file for any new map. This was when I put the maps there. At that point the spawnpoints were accessed along with the objects.lua files.

Also EP - the server is steam enabled.

Maps are here for server:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Project Zomboid Server\media\maps

Mods:  C:\Users\(your username)\Zomboid\mods

It does still say the mods are enabled if you don't add them to that folder, they just won't work.
