EUDOXIO
If you run the server that comes along with the game, is the no steam version of the server. If you want to run the steam version, you have to download it using steam cmd following the instructions http://theindiestone.com/forums/index.php/topic/16360-released-build-3227/ So just use the one that comes with the game, and run the game using the -nosteam launch option so you can connect to it. EnigmaGrey
Then you'll probably have to ask them to do it for you, if you do not have access to the game's files.

Teesee
No, that's not possible. You can only connect servers and clients having the same status : steam with steam, no-steam with no-steam, but not no-steam with steam.
RumpelTj
when I run a steamcmd server, without using hamachi or evolve, how do I know what ip address to use for connecting to the steam server? Is it the public IP? I don't completely understand forwarding the ports and I'm not sure I've done this correctly. I've tried using evolve, and I was able to join my own server, but others were not able to join. I just want to play with my friends!
EasyPickins
A Steam server should always be visible in Steam's own server browser. If you right-click on the server and choose View Server Info you'll see the server's IP address. Everyone, including the person hosting the server, must use that IP address to join. In the game's server browser you can also enter the server's LAN address if you are on the same local network as the server and get an error testing the TCP download port while connecting.
