I also wondered about this.  It would be really simple to add into the game.  

 

I would also like to see temporary bonuses from carrying certain items.  An example would be a temporary bonus point to first aid when carrying a book like Gray's Anatomy or something similar.  Once you dropped the book, you'd lose the bonus.

I like the idea. Using books as a reference guide of sorts. Though perhaps it should have to be in hand or minimally not in a bag for it to have benefit. Maybe it should be even needed, I know I keep a book open while I do things from cooking to otherwise.

Though this whole beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert, and mastery skill book leveling is not as imaginative as it could be. Sure it suits its basic purpose but perhaps someone could think of some creative titles for these books.

Currently the skills that exist are Agility (sprinting, light-footed, nimble, sneaking), blade (accuracy, guard, maintenance), blunt (accuracy, guard, maintenance), crafting (carpentry, cooking, farming, first aid), firearm (aiming and reloading), and survivalist (fishing, trapping, foraging). Of these cooking, carpentry, fishing, farming, and trapping have skill books.

 

Just a few more thoughts outside of the strictly speaking skills there could be books on strength conditioning, item use, trait managment, moodle management (stress/fear reaction for example)...

Perhaps its an excellent place to inject unique content into literature from newspapers and magazines that can have smaller temporary bonuses... since unless the newspaper and magazine delivery is so committed they deliver by helicopter during the apocalypse all of these will be outdated for any sort of in-game narrative. For entertainment and positive moodle purposes it could also have quasi-easter egg story headlines as a hovertext over the item or as apart of the item's name... sort of a random variable number that is added onto the items in game.

Cook books would also be nice... a way for the player to learn new recipes which presumably will be added into the game eventually... unless we are all doomed to eat healthy snacks for the remainders of the apocalypse. An apple, an orange, some water, and some yogurt! Though... I sort of like the healthyish food placement... Which makes me wonder if the actual player's weight will ever change due to eating through the game... is that too much?

 I think that's perfect the way it is :P simple and authentic!

 

Skillbooks for First Aid would be great! (hrr hrrr especially if the come with a tweezer and suture needle sample package inside :geek: )

 

How about a skillbook on Blade Maintenance, and Blunt Maintenance ?....

That was my thoughts on it.  Have it in hand or in your main inventory.  Maybe require it to use for medical procedures beyond just applying bandages if your level is too low.  I know I would need a book to do sutures and splints correctly.  The temporary bonus would basically bump a low level up high enough to perform the task.  So if you were a level 1 you couldn't suture a wound without the aid of the book, or maybe have a risk of failure without it.  The temporary bonus would not give a multiplier, just a temporary point added.  It should also be a different book than the actual skill book for first aid.

 

The same could be done for cooking or learning firearms, etc.  Maybe a Mercenary magazine to help use higher tier weapons, or something similar.  I really like the idea of having books that do more than just applying a multiplier.  It would give people all the more reason to hunt for books in general.  You could still do all the stuff without them, but with chances to fail.

I think that having to carry books around in this fashion to get bonuses would lead to a backpack full of books to use for the occasion, giving us less space to carry other stuff.

And that is the great challenge.  "Do I carry these books, or this gun?"  You could still play just as you do now without the book.  The book would just offer incentives for those who do choose to carry them.  An intellectual character with the Pacifist trait, perhaps?

I actually like this idea. It makes perfect sense for certain skills (cooking, carpentry, etc).

Perhaps instead of having to simply keep the book in your inventory, you would have to read the book as well to apply the bonus temporarily (a few in-game hours).

i like this idea but i feel after time the player will forget so what if as you read it over and over you learn the stuff for longer and its permanent when you level up.

That could work, Kingjjwpenguin.  I was thinking more along the lines of using the book to reference specific material.  The time it takes to read would be MUCH shorter than reading a skill book, but still a decent time.  Maybe twice as long as reading a "regular" Book. 

 

So if, for example, you want to figure out how you can use that rotten tomato and still make soup, but your character only has Cooking level 6....grab the Cook Book item, and sit your character down with it for a quick in-game minute.  When you're done, you have just a few in-game hours to cook at level 7, and then you lose the bonus and revert to level 6 after that.  Books of this style should also be re-readable.

 

I feel like the bonus should ONLY be temporary, as we already have Skill books that aid in leveling your skills permanently.

well as i was saying because when you drop a book you don't instantly forget everything you just read n the past hours because you drop a book. And i feel having a new thing while you are doing the action like cooking and you have a cooking book you could "reference" the book. this would work similar to your method where after using reference for a few hours in game you will remember the stuff but you also must have the book while you are doing this. It slows you down until you learn it though but it does give the advantage. Then if you wanted to really learn it you could read it then practice it.

Please!! I Need the Foraging and Electrical Books. <3 its sooo hard to level them with 1x or even 2x multiplier...

And toss a First Aid book in too, although this can wait until NPC's i think :D since leveling it basicly means u should die. but with NPCs u can level it on them.

This is probably one of the best suggestions i've seen especially with carrying a book around for reference.  I have at least 5 books on my shelf dedicated to this alone, and all are water proofed so i can use them in the field. One in particular I am able to use tree species to identify where a good place to build a well is at or if a lake is near by.

Other games like Mount and Blade do this. I like the system. They take up an inventory spot and its up to the player whether or not they carry them.

Then leave them in your base and hope you're close to it when breaking your leg.

If this would be an additional feature, than you could also just ignore it and continue to play like you did.

I really like the idea of having some specialised books somewhere (in the base or even your inventory) for the occasional moment you could need some extra skills is nice and somewhat balanced.

This game needs more rare special items to go hunting for in my opinion.

I'm fairly sure the reason we don't have books for electrical and first aid and such is simply because it's a low priority for the devs. I refuse to believe it never occurred to them o.O When we get closer to feature completion I assume all these "obvious" missing items will come out in one go. In the meantime I bet they wouldn't be hard to mod in if someone hasn't already.

 

As for using reference material, I like to think they already exist in the form of recipe books. You don't have to keep them on you after you read them, but it's the same basic principle: having reference material allows you to do stuff you couldn't otherwise. Perhaps we could add recipe books for items you would learn anyhow through leveling. For example, maybe you could find a "Wood stairs" recipe book that allows you to build stairs before reaching lvl6 carpentry. Conversely, maybe those things that can currently only be done via recipe books or professions (bread, pipebombs, etc...) could be learned naturally through leveling.

I am liking this better than lugging books around. I I understand that if books were made like that, it would be optional to carry them, but I just don't like thinking about if I were in the situation of my character and having to carry "How to best kill zombies" around in my inventory.

May I add cooking recipes for special culinary delights?

Some people (moms) rip the pages out of tabloid press.

(you know, the cheesy ones with information about divorced princes and pregnant heads of states)

and that stuff could be found in kitchens!!! (who would have thought?)

 

And how about magazines that teach you Blunt & Blade-Maintenance?

I guess every skill deserves a book :)

 

Maybe with NPC's there are trainers added to the game ;)
