Vending Machines and Elevators

Vending Machine

I'm quite aware Vending Machines exist in PZ however they simply act as containers.

How about having two ways to get their contents?
1. Using a coin to then select an item inside:

How about making the player use a coin to then select something in the Vending Machine. Obviously supplies would be limited.

2. Breaking the Vending Machine and stealing the contents:

I don't think I need to finish explaining that.

Final Thoughts: Also in order for this and the next suggestion to work PZ would need a button pressing/selecting menu for activating things.

Elevators

How about in the big hotels and casinos (if those are ever added) there were Elevator(s) that could function exactly like real Elevators:

1. Selecting a button to take the Elevator to your current level and causing the doors to open.

2. Entering the Elevator and selecting a button corresponding to various floors also causing the doors to close.

3. The Elevator arriving at the floor and waiting for the Player(s) to exit before the door closes.

Final Thoughts: This system would only work when the power was on obviously. And could (maybe) be sabotaged at the top by attacking the wheels and ropes up in the open shaft?

Crafting? (Maybe a stretch)

Maybe at the highest carpentry level Player(s) could craft makeshift wooden equivalents of these items?

A player could make a makeshift Elevator for their fortress and make Vending Machines for cities to charge other Player(s) for items automatically!

I find the way vending machines work at the moment to be a tad too easy. The fact you just take chips/soda out of them with the same effort as any other container doesn't make much sense.

The way I'd like it to work is that you do actually have to smash the glass, which would alert zombies in the same way as smashing any other window. At the same time, it would make sense if you could still view it's contents to see it's empty before actually smashing the glass, thus ensuring there's actually something in there and that you didn't attract attention for nothing.

Going further into it, maybe with a certain carpentry/engineering/mechanic level (I believe they discussed adding such skills), it'd be possible to dismantle the vending machine (when that's added) which would be quiet but take a while to do.

Just throwing out random ideas.  :P

I support this idea, with one teeny reservation: Vending machines don't actually have glass fronts. They're transparent plastic, and specifically to prevent people from pulling a smash-and-grab. But after a moment's reflection I think I can ignore that because of what you said: It would make noise and alert zombies. I think that's a very good gameplay trade-off.

The benefit, I think, should be that instead of a packet or two of chips, a vending machine might hold six or eight small junk-food items: chips, chocolate, maybe something not yet present in the game like cookies or something. But the risk is that there's a slim chance you might end up with a scratch or deep cut from the broken glass, like climbing through a broken window.

(Also if you eat too many junk-food items too quickly it should totally make you queasy.)

I was thinking the same with the smash-resistant plastic. Perhaps follow what you said about the vending machine having a good amount of snacks/drinks, but have it require a much heavier tool to break into? Perhaps a crowbar or even a sledgehammer.

Maaaaybe, though I'm kind of prejudiced right now against the sledgehammer because I recently went on a crate-smashing spree at the logging company trying to find a spade and one never turned up. So phooey to the sledgehammer and all that it implies.

But personal vendettas aside, yes, that's an idea worth considering. Although since the vending machine is a container, won't the sledgehammer work on it regardless? I think it would destroy it and leave its contents (if any) on the floor, wouldn't it?

I believe so. Something worth testing real quick.

I would never waste my time finding a coin to put into a machine when I could just smash it.

The question is: when breaking into a house, do you just break the window and alert loads of zeds, or do your try to get in without making any noise? For me it's the latter, atleast when I play with zombies set on insane. Most vending machines are in completely overrun areas, making the noise even more dangerous. Also, implementing this would make wallets useful.

Elevators are nice, but only if the power is on. After that their existent is a waste

1. But what if you're starting out on a populated server and hungry without weapons? Or if you're a player trying to run a shop without the need for you to be there 24/7.

2. Thats kinda the point...
