Genre: «Sol-Ark» - is an indie-project focusing on 2D space faring real-time strategy/sim (RTS) with some Rogue-like and Sandbox elements. It’s an old-school hand-made flash project

Short description: Sol-Ark is a 2D Space RTS with sandbox and rogue-like components. Expect gameplay mechanics designed with player choice in mind and an immense universe to make those decisions in.

Missions and storylines drift from seriously somber to hilariously violent with every new area explored, and random events punctuate these encounters to create a dynamic experience that’s part procedural generation, part astrotechnic action puzzle battle-scarred deep space handcrafted indie celestial celebration

A few of Sol-Ark's Features:

Crew morale system
One of the most interesting mechanics we've introduced is a morale system for NPCs, consisting of varying degrees of four moods. These moods affect how any given NPC will perform a task. Ask a happy NPC to switch out a reactor core and they might do it in half the time, whistling all the while. Ask a depressed NPC to do the same task and they may open the airlock and jettison themselves, and other crew members into the unforgiving void of space.

Random events
The game will feature dozens of events ranging in class and severity. You'll encounter pirates, miners, derelict stations and celestial phenomenon that will alter your crew's mood, send you on quests, and engage you with ambushes, full frontal assaults and other intergalactic shenanigans. Expect naturally occurring lasers to sever your ship, and be wary of the allure and intrigue of alien-infested cargo adrift in space.
Vnezapnye%20prepiatsviia.jpg

Sandbox Style Construction
You'll be building your ship from frame, to floor, to wall and ceiling. You can shape and build the ship to your own liking and compartmentalize its systems however you see fit. Do you want your ship to look like a massive triangle of death, surrounded by torpedo turrets, lasers and cannons? Go for it. Want your ship to be shaped like a massive cat head? Please give it a shot, and send us some screenshots.

Hello, everyone! We are publishing the second article from a series about main gameplay features of Sol-Ark.

Here is the second article in that list - deep space sandbox.

Unique_ship.jpg

If you didn’t already know, astronauts can’t survive in space if they are naked, or if they don’t have a ship. Aside from disciplining nude crew members, in Sol-Ark it’s up to the player to craft a proper star cruiser for their herd of daring, mentally deranged, and sometimes homicidal space explorers.

A spaceship should be a personal reflection of the player, and in Sol-Ark you’ll have full control over crafting your own void hardened interstellar vessel. Want your ship to look like a cat? How about a dinosaur riding on a cat with laser vision? In this game no one is going to stop you.

Hello, everyone! We are publishing the fourth article from a series about main Sol-Ark's features of gameplay (there are 17 of them) - Map's levels.

map_levels.jpg

In Sol Ark you will be in charge of an entire ship, determining the fates of a helpless astronaut crew and the longevity of the entire human race as well. To make this task a little easier, and more fun, you will have access to multiple maps which will allow you to have control over the various workings of your ship.

Hello, everyone! We are publishing the fifth article from a series about main Sol-Ark's features of gameplay (there are 17 of them) - Attack and defense systems

file.jpg

We’re going to put the “pew” back into “pew pew pew.” Sol Ark will have a bountiful selection of weaponry and defensive systems to keep your ship afloat on the black and raging battle rife sea. I’m talking about lasers. You know, those shiny beams of concentrated light propagation that have a penchant for melting through ship hulls and the soft flesh of your enemies. Lasers will vary in color depending on their strength, adding a pretty palate to the death and destruction you’ll bestow upon haphazard pirates, robots, and alien armadas.

Hello, everyone! We are publishing the sixth article from a series about main Sol-Ark's features of gameplay (there are 17 of them) - Systems and subsystems

Complex_devices.jpg

When you take over the role of the Sol Ark's Virtual Intelligence system you'll need to know exactly what makes the ship run. Or you could crash your ship and watch all your astronauts die, but this article is for those of you that actually want to do well in the game.

Hello, everyone! We are publishing the seventh article from a series about main Sol-Ark's features - Skeletal animation for sprites

This week Sol-Ark is showing off its skeletal animation engine. This is how we create sprites, by hand, that will populate our game world and carry out the player’s will and commands.

Medics_layers.png

Each sprite can be made of more than 20 layers, some of which you may see exploded and bloody in the game after a meteorite impact or enemy assault.

Hello, everyone! We are publishing the eighth article from a series about main Sol-Ark's features of gameplay - Life support systems

Crew_life-supporting.jpg

In Sol-Ark you will have the sole responsibility of keeping the crew of your space voyage alive and healthy. Well, as alive and healthy as you can manage. Life support systems need to be constructed to preserve their interstellar habitat, and stop them from leaping out of airlocks or lighting the V.I. system on fire.

Hello, everyone! We are publishing the ninth article from a series about main Sol-Ark's features of gameplay - Crew Morale

CrewMorale1.jpg

Astronauts today are heralded as some of the bravest and most noble members of our species. In the future some space explorers are emotionally volatile sacks of skin that need you to be their baby sitter and make sure they behave. In Sol-Ark you will have to monitor the crew’s morale, which can range from different levels of happiness, anger, depression and aloofness.

A crew members morale will dictate certain aspects of their behavior, especially when given a task to perform. If you ask an agitated and angered NPC to fix a power transmitter they may damage it, themselves, or even cause it to short circuit and zap any crew in the vicinity. Scrubbing electrically popped astronaut guts off your space ship floor is not how you want to spend your time, trust me.

Hello, everyone! We are publishing the tenth article from a series aboutmain Sol-Ark's features of gameplay - Exploration

Exploring.jpg

Drifting out in space are mysteries waiting to show your astronauts secrets. They might also bite their heads off, you never know.

There will be plenty of things to explore in the many systems you’ll travel to in Sol-Ark. Derelict ships, stations, and outposts with questionable purposes float aimlessly with guarded treasure and shadowed enemies.

Game_Over.jpg

Game Over. It happens to most people at least once while playing a game. It will almost certainly happen to you while playing ours. We’re still coming up with all the conditions that result in a Game Over, but here are a few that are being worked on now.

Hello, everyone! We are publishing the twelfth article from a series about main Sol-Ark's features of gameplay - Control systems

1.jpg

Monitoring your ship’s systems could be a full time job. But with angry pirates, alien infections, and intercosmic masers constantly threatening your existence you can’t always be micromanaging your

systems. That’s why you’ll have the ability to set systems to run automatically or be subjected to the errors of manual control.

Might I make a suggestion here -

As you post updates, you might want to remove videos and/or gifs from previous posts, or link to them elsewhere because if you load the first page of this thread now, EVERYTHING slows to a crawl.

While all the updates and images are brilliant, I gave up checking the updates here until I saw you'd reached another page worth.

Hello, friends!

We are updating this thread with a new devlog (05/05/2015 CheckPoint) and a new gameplay video.

All graphics and gameplay features are a work in progress.

Stay with us and look, how Sol-Ark evolves right before your eyes!

P.S. On community's demand I've spent more than 6 hours, fixing all our threads on different forums and portals. First of all, I deleted (but left their links) all visible gifs from previous posts, excepting the zero post and last messages.

My apologies to everyone who had troubles with that. From now, we'll use gifs only in the first and in the last messages.
