  1. The current method of canning involves using vinegar to "pickle" the foods before boiling. Adding vinegar is required to can low-acid foods such as meats and vegetables, but is not required for canning high-acid foods such as fruits and tomatoes. The following is my recommendation for expanding the canning recipes in-game: All fruits and tomatoes can be canned using water and sugar and cooking the result. Vegetables, seafood, and meats can be canned using the current method of pickling (water, sugar, vinegar). Optionally, if a pressure cooker was added to the game the recipe could forgo vinegar as the higher temperature and pressure would make it unnecessary. This is a simplification of the canning process for playability. The actual process of canning involves a lot more ingredients and steps. If the developers wished to expand canning even more, there are a lot of fun things they could add, such as: Canning fruits in alcohol instead of water Turning fruits into jams and jellies Canning salsa's, salads, and soups Pickled eggs, sauerkraut (from cabbage), and kombucha Additionally, some method of reusing lids or creating new ones would be appreciated since lids are consumed in the process and are limited in number.

    Reusable Jars

http://pz-mods.net/weapons-items/ReusableJars/ This mod creates a new item - an "Empty Jar with Lid" that can be reused. The jar and lid are treated as one single item and it will be returned to you after it's emptied, so that you can use it over and over again. The game's original jars and lids still exist, but this item will spawn in home kitchens, although it is moderately rare. Please note, this will only work with the default canning foods - carrots, potatoes, etc. If you have a mod that allows you to can meat or anything else, this jar won't work for those recipes.
  3. So I like that canning goods has been added even though its a bit useless due to the rarity of jars/lids and the fact that food doesn't last long. As someone who lives in Eastern Europe where canning is extremely common I would like to throw my 2 cents and say what you did right and what you missed. You made the recipes for canning have sugar and vinegar in a jar with water and vegetables and while that would work its overall a pretty crappy method of canning. I am guessing you did this to keep things simple and I get why but I feel the need to tell you how its properly done and maybe give you an idea for future updates. You take a pot add water, vinegar, sugar, salt and in some cases black pepper. You then put it on a fire source until it begins to boil. The vegetables must be tightly packed inside the jar before you pour the liquid on them. After it begins boiling you remove it from your stove/fire and add the super secret eastern european ingredient to the mix which is....aspirin. At this point you might think I am joking with you but I am completely serious. Aspirin does miracles to preserve canned goods. I have torshi that was canned in 2012 and its still good for consumption. Anyway the aspirin must dissolve in the liquid while its still hot and then you pour it into the packed jars and close em. Last step is sterilizing them where you either pour boiling water on the lids or you put the jars in water and boil them for 4-5 minutes. While I am at it I am going to throw in two more ideas. First one is adding homemade jam. You already have strawberries and rosehips in the game so thats 2 types already. I ain't gonna go so much in depth like the stuff I said above all I am going to say its pretty simple and you already have the stuff you need in game. Last idea is preservation through fermentation. A good example is sauerkraut. If you don't know how to make sauerkraut this is the proper way to do it. You take a barrel and tightly fill it up with cabbages which you keep pressed to the bottom with something heavy on top like a rock for example (not joking I use rocks). Then you fill it up with water and add salt to the mix. Adding corn will speed up the fermentation process while adding carrots will make it tastier. I know germans cut the cabbage into tiny pieces but here we don't bother and just throw the whole cabbage into the barrel. The trick is to keep the cabbage under the water for the fermentation process to work otherwise it will rot if it floats on top. It's a little more in depth but I feel this is simple enough for the game. Maybe make so you learn these things from a magazine including canning? I find it absurd that you can't make bread dough without a magazine yet you somehow know how to can food from the moment you spawn. Anyway if you don't like my ideas I am still glad I managed to teach you something new today.
  4. Hey i just wanted to say that with the introduction of metal and metal working, would the Devs eventually put in canning your own food? It seems like a simple process... I even found a video about it xD There can be canning machines found, (rarely) through out the urban areas, they require electricity so with the addition of the generators and gas it would make a great addition to the game. You would have to start farming early on and then you can make your own food storage for late game. Also i'd also love to see a way to create a makeshift fishing rod from nothing but what you find in the wilderness. That brings up a new way of making string or rope, from vines or just from zombie's clothes. Anyway i'm sure these ideas have been posted before but i'm just bringing it back up.
  5. Alright i might sound a little weird but i was hoping somebody could make jars more common along with lids, i know some other mods already do this like Hydrocraft but i was hoping to get just the more jars part. Possibly spawning them in all counters not just the uncommon ones, or in crates and sheds.
  6. Canning should be necessary to get through winter just like in "ye old time" Jar lids are basically waxed metal plates, so it would be make sense to be able to refurbished them with candles. As so candles and jars would become quite valuable and it would be good reason to force player to go scavenge even if they are able to farm. Also, canned trout.
