Interesting read, looks much more dramatic than the usual crowdfunded failure, devs/employees suing each other, not sure what's going on exactly though, and people are still debating who's who and what's what.

Reminds me of those ArmA mods, Altis/Stratis Life, but being a dedicated game could be much better.

I really agree with this, basically what I always say when discussing the big MMOs.

I've heard of the series, never got around to checking it out though.  Thanks.

Wait until it's fully released IMHO.

While it's true I had fun playing the early builds a lot of it came from the prospect of a constant stream of added content and wonder. That's pretty much gone now and all I see when I start up Starbound is a mediocre game that's fun early game, great mid game and a fucking pitiful "going through the motions" late game.

I was going to buy this game when it comes out but if you can't run your own server on your own pc then I would never buy it

Seem like the devs want extra money from rented servers

Burned myself out on the Early Access craze. No regrets, 45 hours (at least 30 enjoyable ones) for 15 bucks seems fair to me. lol

If it's true, I hope they would add a way to fix it.

I can understand drafts from a poorly boarded up window, but add some caulking or something to seal gaps and you'd probably end up better than the original window, especially if it's one piece of wood like a single piece of plywood.  The glass in windows, from the cheapest to the most fancy multiple pane gas filled blah blah, is basically the worst point of insulation in homes.  With only a bit of effort any boarded up broken window should be superior to the original window in terms of retaining heat.

I feel the same. Back in the good days of ArmA 2, the gaming community I'm part of used to play it with the ACE mod installed and nothing else. Had some great craic playing some of the best co-op missions you could find. Then DayZ came along and the zombie craze settled in. I don't have any resentment towards DayZ or their community, but I can't deny that they've effectively taken over the franchise.

DayZ has always been that sort of half-filled accomplished mod, and the standalone isn't an exception to this. It's a shame because a lot of quality within the community was sacrificed for the sake of the mod. I still have some good moments playing the likes of DayZ Origins with some of my mates but it pales in comparison to the moments I've had in terms of playing ACE inspired co-op missions.

ArmA 3 is also a massive step back in the series and I don't see it improving with age. This is evident from the fact that the most popular thing on ArmA 3 is Altis Life, a sort of RPG type game which is actually quite fun to play, but again shows that the community is lacking quality content to enjoy what the game was made for. It won't be long till the likes of Breaking Point and Epoch ArmA 3 take over altogether.

This is a pretty good way to look at it, but there is one big problem.  We can't really know what happens behind the scenes, why something fails to deliver.  The "why" would be the factor that determines whether our reaction should be one of disappointment or outrage.  Still I agree that we should not be naive, and whatever the reason we should always be aware of the fact that there is no guarantee of anything.  Reasons for failure could be anything, from genuine failings with good intentions, to outright scams.  Again, in most cases we'll never know.

On a side note, I have always believed there will eventually be a crowdfunding "bubble" that will burst.  I'm also kind of expecting some big project to fail badly under suspicious circumstances or in some way that leaves the backers generally feeling ripped off, at which time some lawyers will decide to take a stab at it.

I cannot 100% confirm this, but apparently if you do the $35 upgrade to GameMaker Pro (from this free standard) they will give you a Steam key for Pro, that's for Pro ONLY apparently.  So if by chance you already have GameMaker Standard on Steam and want to upgrade to Pro for $35, you can do so indirectly thru this promo.

I saw a user post about it in a comment somewhere, and then also noticed a note on GameMaker's site that mentioned Steam keys for Pro would be provided approx 7 days after purchase.  I am pretty confident it will work that way.

Nah, there will be more focus on strategy. It wil probably more be like wasteland/fallout/jagged-alliance in a post-apocalyptic zombie setting. Still, looking forward to the game

It's a good idea, I mean I have had many problems with trying to approach zombies that are hidden by walls that the player would clearly be able to see otherwise.

I like this thinking, and for me it's especially important when multiplayer comes along, or I guess now in splitscreen.  It makes for fun and interesting situations where you need to rescue someone.  I've talked about it before in relation to climbing, being able to climb onto something but being stuck there and waiting/hoping/calling for help.  Of course your idea about getting lucky and having a random event save you could work too, it's the same basic idea.

Being trapped, holed up, surrounded by zombies but "safe" in terms of not actually getting killed by them.  This is a key element in zombie lore, and is a major part of the hopelessness and impending doom that so many fans love about zombie stories.

Sure you could do that, but most typical "hammers" people have in North America are claw hammers, with the other side made for removing nails and it can do a bit of prying.  Of course, a pry bar or crowbar would work even better.  I'm guessing the screwdrivers thing is just to balance the game, so that hammers or crowbars aren't too "overpowered".  Seems kinda silly though.

I think adding sandbox options that go against the fundamentals of the game are not really a bad thing. This game is deep and complex, or at least it's planned to be.  I sort of see sandbox mode as possibly becoming a tool through which an average person without technical knowledge can play with sliders and checkboxes and create almost a total conversion mod, almost a new game.

All the survival mechanics, the crafting, building, and all the stuff this game will hopefully have when it's done.  The majority of that stuff is not even zombie related or specific.  There have been many discussions of selling this thing to other devs as a game engine, because it's going to have so much stuff.  Now, I think it would be awesome to put as many of those things as possible into the sandbox options and allow everyday users to mess around with it.  Even just something super simple, turn off zombies and turn NPCs way up, and you've got a non-zombie post apocalypse survival game.

Personally there have been things I want the ability to turn off in sandbox that could admittedly make the game a lot easier.  To be specific, I hate the idea of boredom.  Now, do I want to disable it because I want an easier game?  No, I just don't like it for a bunch of reasons and I'd like the option to play without it.  Still, even if I wanted an easier game, oh well, that'd just be my preference.

But see happiness is not the same as sanity, and making being happy an opposite effect is not logical and increases screen clutter (which is the very reason you were arguing against it above XD). Like I said... there is no benefit for being sane other than just... being sane.

Anxiety, boredom, and panic should all contribute to insanity (slowly). Overall insanity should be one of the slower moving moodles, not one that pops up and down instantly.

I don't really like this idea because I'm not a fan of taking control away from the player like this. I think that you, as a player, should be panicking if a zombie leaps at you around the corner and that should affect your response time and/or cause you to fumble, rather than something forced in the game.

But that's just my opinion, and CaptainBinky actually posted something similar to your idea in the old forum once in response to having a shaky cursor when scared (which he did not agree with): http://theindiestone.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=12754&p=176371&hilit=cursor+shake#p176371
