You wouldn't have to remove the entire trait, just remove it from the list. That's all.

I doubt (though I could be wrong) that it would take more than a couple lines of script to temporarily remove two traits.

I'd suggest, at least until you've sorted out the NPC system, to remove the negative (and thereby pointgiving) traits "Brooding" and "Short Tempered". they seem only to exist to give people some extra positive traits, and I cannot resist the temptation.
