In the demo I ended up at one point stark naked(ditched my clothes because I was so debilitated with moodles my carry capacity had dropped to 2) before succumbing to wounds suffered from breaking through a window naked. I swear I could hear the zeds laughing.

I've not played long but I am grossly dissapointed that I've not seen a machete yet. I was assuming I just wasn't finding them but I take this post to mean they don't exist in game, and that' as much a shame as it is a kick in the balls to the whole realism thing. I'm a Kentuckian and I don't know a single family that doesn't at least have a couple cheap Coleman camping machetes in the garage. Personally, I have a pair of Gerber Gators for camping and the Coleman's for yard work. Point is, in this state, a Machete is as household a tool as a hammer or screwdriver are. That they aren't in the game means a developer somewhere needs his ass kicked

As far as animals go, I think you missed foxes (unless I just missed then reading on my phone).
I've lived extensive in two states that are silencer-legal (South Carolina and Iowa) and I have only seen a silencer once- at a gun show. I don't sell them where I work (we're a firearms dealer), so I'd concur that finding a real one is far too unlikely to be practical. I had a pretty big lecture in another post- I'll get the link when I get off work.

3 game issues/bugs/mechanics that annoy you most. The 3 that if you were in charge of these fine devs, you'd say, "Stop! Stop it all! Fix these 3 things TEW-DAY!" This is not meant to diminish the hard work put in. This is the most fun I've ever had with a beta. That said:

#1: Belly Flopping crawlers insta-biting my junk. Here I am, I see this corpse-thing laying on it's back all peaceful but I know something's up. I slowly approach it with my axe drawn back, "I know that thing is alive... dead... undead..." and while I'm having this argument with myself, the zed shows strong zed-fu and in a blink is on its belly and I have a bite on my balls. Is this some cruel joke? Surely it's not intentional. Those crawler bastards account for 3/5 of my survivor deaths.

#2: WHY NO SLEDGHAMMERS! Seriously... i know they're out there. I've heard other players speak of them. I even saw one once about 4 survivors ago, but it ran away. And by ran away i mean i got bit in the face running out of the house doing a victory dance. How's about upping the rng drop rate for those things just a hair. Maybe some Barbed Wire love too if you're feelin' it. No? K just the Sledges then.

#3: Our survivor may be an average joe, but that doesn't mean everyone in Knox county was that way. What's wrong with finding a Carpenter's home stocked with tools, a Chef's home stocked with food and cooking stuffs, or a Survivalists home stocked with canned goods and ammo? Randomly generate which houses spawn with these descriptors. Add some foils if you like, like the Dentist's house full of toothpaste and dental floss and organic food that all rotted. That would be my goal, the thing that would keep me going in this scenario. After settling in and scouring the local obvious spots, it's what kind of caches can be found in each house. How victorious I'd feel that day I found the Gardener's house with a cache of seeds, fertilizer and spare gardening tools.

What're your 3 big frustrations livin' in a surivors paradise?

That's what a vacuum sealer is. It's a vacuum motor in a pretty housing to market it to suburban housewives. It would take 20 minutes and materials already ixisting in game to alter the vacuum cleaner housing to function as a sealer. Then you could use a curling iron or something of the like to seal the bag.
You can hang and smoke meats to preserve them. Create a table with a reflective surface(like aluminum foil or sheet metal) to use for dehydrating meats and fruits. Fill a laundry tote with sand and store it in a cool, dry place (for now, a ground floor room with no windows until we get basements) and preserve veggies in the sand(works especially well for root and tuber veg). Canning just requires the materials(which are found on store shelves in Walmart even). Each of these things requires no electricity, and only two even require the survivor provide a heat source. The dehydration table relies on the sun.

Everyone already pointed out the obvious. NPCs will expand this so much, we'll have trouble finding time to read a skill book anymore I'd imagine lol. I can't wait.

Something I think would be great: Add list of specialized homes randomly chosen from existing houses. Like finding a house that belonged to a successful local Carpenter, and it be stocked accordingly with a nice cache of construction material and tools, maybe even at the expense of other items normally found in a home. The Gardener, Survivalist, Ahtletics Coach, etc. Even toss in some foils like the Dentist house with more toothpaste and toothbrushes than food lol. Point is, randomly placing these caches creates a large incentive to venture out even after you're stocked, and does so without breaking the realism. It'd be loads of fun and go a long way to address those 5 month survivor blues.

What I'm currently doing to adderss this is turning about 1/4 of West Point into a fortress. I've cleared 2/3 of the city on my current best survivor and have stock to last a decade probably lol. I'm gonna turn the elementary school lot into a huge farm (my safehouse is the block directly across the street from it). I'm scared to take the Muldraugh trip with her lol. just a thought.

personally, there would be no way i would go into an underground bunker with only one way in or out. not only would claustrophobia and panic attacks become a daily occurrence, but the odds of getting trapped in there would have an even worse effect on my mental health.

throw in the chance of someone who was with you starting to freak out at the same time you are freaking out and you get a very real risk of someone getting killed. then while the others remove the body from the shelter, even more risk of being seen by raiders, other survivors, or zombies.

can't stay down there forever, eventually you have to go topside for one reason or another. and having been isolated as you were, you really would not have any idea what had been happening, where the hordes may be, if someone was searching for survivors, if napalm had been used to wipe out the bigger hordes..........
the isolation may turn out to be the exact thing that kills you.

Back on the general Kentucky point, I've got 2 words for you...... Moon-Shine

While using fiction as a reference isn't advisable as you may end up reflecting the author/artist instead of the topic, I was thinking..... "Justified" is set in Lexington & Harlan, Kentucky & might make a good reference for clothing, speech, lifestyle, etc.

I'd NEVER condone shooting Spiffo but while searching for ideas for a mock Jim Beam/Moonshine belt buckle for a pic I'm working on I came across multiple references for "coon" hunting in Kentucky. It might make a funny idea for incorporating TIS plugs into the general Kentucky feel....

Essentially what I'm getting at is that I don't think adding items, that COULD be found anywhere, is going to help the slightly generic feel that the game has atm1.... Clothing & Lingo (Survivor Stories & NPCs) will be where this will need to be addressed

1: No disrespect intended to TIS, obviously game mechanics & stability are more important atm. Not to mention the EXCELLENT work done on the map.... The first time I looked at the area on google maps the picture was horrible & it was hard to tell what was going on but now that its been updated, its actually a little creepy how accurate the map is to RL Knox county

Green Thumb and Black Thumb aren't genetic, but neither are some of the other traits on the list. Some are learned. It's not a stretch to have traits that play on something a person may have been raised with an affinity for, or maybe enjoyed as a hobby. Therefor "Green Thumb" is easily justified. As for "Black Thumb" it's not a stretch either to have negative traits playing on the fact that sometimes a person is innately bad at grasping a certain concept, or a lack of personal interest hinders the learning process. These are very real things. Fishing would be a good example to me. I hate fishing and an apocalypse won't change the fact that I hate fishing. I would seek any other means of survival as far as scavenging and hunting before I attempted it. I would find those moments of learning excrutiating, I'd have more fun failing on a hunt than succeeding in fishing. So when that system gets in, if there is a trait negatively affecting fishing, I'll take it every time lol

A bit late to the post, but glad to see you took attention to it! I feel like the topic title is a bit misleading to what I originally wanted to say. Yes, bandages stop bleeding and it's common sense if you bleed too much you die, all I was saying was that the amount of bandages you can get is ridiculous and perhaps it would be a good idea to tone down the number by making zombie clothes either unobtainable or unfit for bandages. The rest was just me being sidetracked. Nice to see that people like the injury via crafting idea too.

Using zombie gore infused materials as bandages for open wounds is probably the single most stupid thing you could possibly do in a real zombie apocalypse. The fact that the game, as it stands, does not recognise this is just a side-effect of it being impossible to implement everything simultaneously

silencers have been discussed thoroughly... please search the forum and you might find similar or completely different opinions on that matter (the spying glass in the upper right corner)

personally, I am against silencers. if you want to stay hidden then don't shoot a gun. if you don't have the balls to attract a horde, then dont shoot a gun. it's as simple as that

the repairing of some items isnt perfect yet, I too admit that fixing a broken axe with glue wouldnt help much prolly... maybe it would make more sense to strengthen it before it breaks to slow down the wearout of it...

there has also been quite a few posts about traps...

As far as silencers go? Simple fix. Make it pull hordes from a smaller distance than an unsuppressed gun to reflect how they really work. Still makes discharging a firearm a risky proposition, but, more flexible in its terms of use I guess.

Given that I've never in my life been to Muldraugh, or anywhere in Kentucky for that matter - to the best of my ability with the reference available, I couldn't find much in the way of civilian farmland immediately surrounding Muldraugh itself. However, To the west of West Point and then connecting to the area where we have the one solitary little farm far to the West of Muldraugh appears to be a substantial area of farming. As the map develops, this area will all get filled in and connected.

So the lack of farmland, as it stands, is more to do with our focus on the more urban areas, specifically because there were complaints that the new map which more reflected the region was too sparse. So we added West Point and took a few liberties in terms of building density. But I too look forward to more rural areas if for no other reason than it would link up these islands of completed map areas

That all said, all these observations from someone who actually lives there are very valuable to us. We are striving for something reeeeasonably accurate, location-wise. But game decisions trump accuracy, so it's kind of a balancing act.

We do get starter gear, it's all in the house you start in. Also if you need hardware supplies the warehouse or hardware store are always stocked with enough supplies, even if you are on rare. Also I love the idea of lockpicking.
To be serious my big three are
    1. No hunting rifles or silencers, I want to turn my park ranger into a master marksmen
    2. Lacking of generators
    3. Not being able to do graffiti and make effective "HELP" signs or making custom landmarks to know where you are.
I'm sure all those will be added in eventually though and there is already a graffiti mod.
Oh actually I'll go ahead and add a fourth
    4. NO BASEMENTS, I really want there to be basements, maybe even a few basements with left over bomb shelters in them.

I've spent my life as a rural West Kentucky native and I have a few suggestions from that point of view. I only feel my life experience is relevent because of the game's setting and the efforts of the developers and community to make it as realisitic in it's experience as possible(Muldraugh may as well be my hometown of Benton). Some of these suggestions have already been brought up, and some are even already in development from what I've read. As it purtains to such suggestions, I just want to reinforce them from the mentioned perspective.
We need a larger selection of practical weapons. I can imagine how many times you've heard/read this, but it's true. There are 3 melee weapons that are so commonplace here, it feels like I'm playing in a foreign country that has them outlawed. By the end of a month, a lone survivor would be sick of picking up Coleman machetes. Hatchets as well. People requesting katanas and such swords, sorry but that's not our thing here. We like our blades to serve a purpose beyond killing humans lol. Unless you're talking about knives... We like our knives here so scavenging a rural Kentucky town would yield you many mid-high end blades of various sorts, all ready to outperform a kitchen knife. I don't pretend to tell you how to implement these things, but they must be added soon. It really doesn't feel like Kentucky without these things: Machetes, hatchets, combat/hunting knives. If I get nothing else I ever ask for in the development in this game, it's this paragraph.
The only thing I'd say about ranged weapons, rifles and sport rifles are common here. We like hunting and sport shooting, collecting and even just shooting stuff for the sake of doing it. We like our guns. We have lots of them. It would be more realistic to be worried about my ammo supply. Revolver pistols would be a cool addition. They weigh less, but are less accurate and hold less ammo. A great close quarters gun for those dark office buildings and apartments.
Ammo consolidation like bandoliers, ammo cans, and hunting jackets are common enough to be found in yardsales. I've never seen slings or holsters mentioned though. Holsters should be available for keeping a pistol in its own slot with a quickdraw key.  This key would draw/holster the weapon, holstering automatically re-equps your primary wpn/tool equiped. The speed of the draw can correspond with the Reloading skill. Slings could reduce the encumbrance of a carried rifle/shotgun with a limit of 1 active, no stacking of any sort. Hunter camoflouge would be especially handy when NPCs are implemented.
Boots and raincoats. I feel too restricted in my choice of footwear and a severe lack of protection from elements. Boots could give protection from sctratches/bites on the feet/ankles(hate those crawling bastards), add to elemental resistance, while increasing the noise of your steps a bit. Raincoats are a commonplace item and it feels punishing to have my only protection against rain as a bath towel. Wearing a rain poncho when it's not raining is stifling, making the drawback the same as wearing sweaters unecessarily.
This has grown long so that'll be enough for now. I look forward to answering any questions.

As Fj45 said, almost all of that is planned- and all definitely good ideas.

The main reasons you're not seeing so much variety in certain classes of items (melee, firearms, etc) is because due to the alpha state the devs are more focused on getting all of the game's systems in place. Once all the systems are there, we'll enter beta and  it's there where we'll get to see more variation in items and that kind of thing.

It's also worth noting, bowhunting and crossbow hunting are pretty big down south, too, and that's something we'll also see added in the future at some point.

A picture is worth a thousand words.
To me, a note is worth a story.

What I mean is, what if when scavenging around the map, we once in a while come across a note, written by the owner of the house or by a survivor who tried to hold out here?

    For example:

"Alex, if you're reading this, your father and I have decided to pack up whatever we could and head for the quarantine zone. As soon as you get this, go immediately there. Good luck, and we love you.

    -Mom"

    Or:

    "Dear Julia,

you are a sorry excuse for a girlfriend. You've pushed me around, yelled at me for nothing, and made my life a living hell.

If you find this note, I hope you suffer a gruesome death, and I'll be glad once I'm pissing on your corpse and putting a bullet through your zombie skull, you evil bitch.

    Your former finally-free boyfriend, Rick"

    ...Yeah, just like that.

However, not just notes left by survivors during the outbreak, but papers pre-outbreak, like a child's schoolwork with a 100 on it, or a child's drawing, or maybe some bills that would never be paid. You know, just to make the world JUST a little more like someone was there.

Maybe even a journal left by a survivor that tells of their journey from the beginning of the apocalypse to the end.

I know there will be random meta-events added in the future, but I hope you consider adding something like this in the future if you haven't thought of it already.
