    well the gameplay mechanics are linked to the new anims so it won't be possible to completely play as you do now, the combat system will be built heavily around linked animations, and those animations driving the angle and movement of characters etc. It's not something that can be switched off. It'll just be a case of picking the most appropriate preexisting 2D sprite for them, which in some cases may not 100% match what's going on. We'd just not have the texture space to cover the new anims in 2D sprites. People would need like 20gig graphics card memory.
     
    As I say, we'll do our utmost to make it as awesome as possible without the anims, but the whole reason the anims are going in is to improve the game, particularly the combat which has always been lacking, and not having the anims is by definition missing out on those improvements and the primary reason we went to 3D models in the first place,
     
    The ultimate irony being, of course, we went through this 'I prefered the old pixel style' when we went from the sprites to the 2d renders of 3D models, and then the same thing again when we went from 2d renders of 3D models to the 3D models. And now again with the 3D models to the new 3D anim system. Whatever we're switching from is the 'classic zomboid style' people are worried about losing, then the next time it gets improved the former usurper becomes the new 'classic zomboid style' people are worried about losing.
     
    My guess is in six months after release everyone will stop looking with nostalgia glasses and use the new anims if their PC can deal with it.

    Making sure it doesn't cut people out of playing the game any more is one of the main reasons it's not in testing yet. There's still some work ahead to make sure it works properly with the 2D sprites, and that those without 3D character support can still play.
     
    We'll still provide 2D sprites, though for legacy purposes for those without shader support,  so it'll just use the most applicable 2D animation and closest fit zombie sprite (colour wise etc) in place of the 3D anims (as well as for zombies on lower end machines of which we can never assume a PC can draw 200 zombies at 60fps). This is unlikely to look close to as good but we'll make it the best we can. There's the possibility we can get the player character using the 3D models regardless of people's shader support, which may allow more people to get benefit of the player side of the 3D anims.
     
    As far as optimization is concerned, I don't envision these having that much impact on performance in themselves per character or per zombie, however they look so good compared to the old ones, particularly with 2X and the rest, the 2D sprites look so old by comparison that the dissonance between having ALL zombies 3D and having just some of them may be a bit less pretty, so they may encourage people to want to set the zombie counts higher than their machines can handle. I won't lie it'll probably be a bit of a  bummer to those who can't use the 3D models for all the zombies, but we'll do our best to make it look as good as possible, provide options for lower end machines, while allowing higher end machines (and more crucially lower end machines in 5 / 10 years time who we hope will still be playing on occasion :D). We can't hold off improving the game for the majority for the sake of those with bottom end specs. We're doing all we can not to lose anyone off the bottom but we have a responsibility and desire to make the game as good as we can before we move to pastures new.
     
    It should be of note too that we have a new option to change the framerate of the anims independently of the game framerate. Therefore it's possible to give player + zombies less smooth framerate (either subtly, or extremely more like the 2D sprites) but still keeping the game running smoothly otherwise. This will be good for people wanting to emulate the more retro sprite look too, we could probably do some alternate shaders to make it feel more 2D.

    Just leaving this here...
    A nice treat for us all this Mondoid. An update on the new animation system, along with a video that we feel really underlines just how much of an impact it will all have on PZ once it goes live. Alongside the fruits of The Secret Mission it’s a great thing to see in motion!
    First the video, then a few explanations…

    Background work featuring Martin the animator man has been ongoing for a while now, and we now have a huge library of animations for players and zombies that we’re in the process of implementing. We’ve got everything in the can from core stuff like combat and character movement, all the way to vomiting, rubbing painful body parts and swigging from bottles.
    In the recent implementation work one aspect we got working far better than expected were ‘masked animations’ and more specifically ‘upper body only’ ones. This means that we can play animations on the player’s top half (and that of the zombies) without interrupting what their feet are doing. This is proving useful for zombie attacks and player emotes – seeing them work on characters who are standing, walking, sneaking or shambling.
    Some things to note about the video:
    Please be aware that not all the zombie and clothing variants are in. You’ll probably notice a lack of ladies, and an awful lot of ‘professional’ zombie. Ladies are coming, but it’s easier to focus on one model at a time. Likewise, there’ll be a bunch more civilian zeds in the final thing, in fact ‘profession zeds’ will likely be found in/around relevant buildings and areas. We just wanted to ramp up the cool hat-wearing zombies during the testing process. Also, bear in mind that if there are any glitches visible in the video or non-synced animations then they’ll be fixed by release. The new animation system has come on a long way, and we now have what feels close to a working system. There is, however, still some work required before it could be put into internal testing. It’s not clear if this will make it into the Build 34 IWBUMS public test or not, and similarly not clear if Animation or Creative will be first out of the gate. It largely depends on how both of these go, what unforeseen problems we may hit, and which passes the finishing line first.
    We hope you agree that it’ll be awesome when it arrives though! It’s fantastic to have the animation system at the stage it’s at so that we can show off all Martin’s amazing work who, like Mash with the Secret Mission, has been working out of the spotlight for so long.
    Oh and the ‘easy set-up’ co-op is in testing. There are still a few UI things to sort out, as well as a few bugs that have cropped up, but it’s edging closer.

    Some pressure-induced mistakes & glitches but it had been a long while since I hadn't played in front of a "crowd", like 6 or 7 years. Had some pretty tough apprehension of playing gigs again.

    Granted! All puppies are alive. Their sweet tender hearts need nourishment though, and only potentially enough kibble for 2% of them, supposing all of society's manufacturing was devoted to kibble. Developing a taste for flesh, puppies are the One, the Singlular occupant of the planet.

    Granted! A rock band, two former presidents, and a former presidential candidate all fire guns, divest companies of their employees, and commit arson on a very regular basis. You die sometime eventually and it's all just a very unpleasant experience.

    FOOD TRACKER BUILD
    Hello! As many of you know we're working on making PZ's food system and its impact on Survival more realistic. To do this we need your help!
    It's gonna be hard to balance, hence why we really need your help here, but please stay on the subject, you can sure comment if you think that the system is way too hard with having a good nutrition, but please explain why!
    This is not finished, some bonus/malus about the nutrition aren't in yet (everything about weight/fitness is in though, you can notice new weight-related traits)
    All the packaged food will have nutrition informations displayed, this may change to only display calories (a nutritionnist will know everything!) but try to not stick to that while eating, just act you're playing a normal game..
    Also some new foods are in, but not everything, I have more ideas about that don't worry
     
    HOW? HOW CAN WE HELP?
    We need to see your in-game eating habits in the curreng game, and once we've hoovered enough stats up we will be sure that when we integrate the new system it benefits the survival experience (especially in the late game) rather than become a pain in the arse.
     
    WHERE IS THE BUILD?
    Right click Project Zomboid in your Steam library and select "Properties". Navigate to the Steam Beta tab and input the following password: spiffoburgers
    You may need to restart Steam to see the beta branch in the list.
     
    WHAT DO I DO NOW?
    Play the game entirely as you usually would in normal Survival. After few days/weks (months even!) of play press the J key (character screen) and either screenshot or note down the new figures there: calories, weight, carb, proteins, lipids. These are the gamified real world stats that the new system will run off but will be invisible to most players.
    Then: post in this thread!
    Tell us game settings, a general run-down on what you were eating (more fruits/vegetables, anything you found, etc...) and either post your character screen or tap in your food stats.
     
    ANYTHING ELSE?
    We will also need stats from the late-game, so if you could use a backed up save of a game that's 3+ months in then please do the same. Then post the info up here, being sure to tell us how long you've survived for when the stats were harvested!

    - Last note: This is a version directly from my pc, you may find some weird stuff sometimes (really not a big deal tho!), don't worry all will be ok for real release, stay only on nutrition, thanks
    - Also also: this test is stricly for single player for now, dedicaced server will not be updated.
    - I LOVE EDITING: I may in a future version add a debug files who tracks lot of thing (average calories, average weight gain/loss, how many time you run per day, what food you ate....)
